As requested by Energizer, Pyramid Environmental and Engineering, P.C. has completed
the leachate sampling of the two collection tanks at the Energizer Landfill in Asheboro,
North Carolina. The location of the site is shown on Figure 1.
On August 25, 2016, Pyramid collected leachate samples from the leachate collection
tanks for Cell #1 and Cell #2 at the landfill. The approximate locations of the collection
tanks at the Energizer landfill are shown on Figure 2.
The samples were collected using a telescopic dipper with a properly decontaminated
600-milligram polypropylene ladle. The samples were preserved in laboratory prepared
containers and immediately placed on ice in a cooler for shipment to ESC Lab Sciences.
As directed by Energizer, the leachate samples were analyzed for Target Compound List
(TCL) Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) using EPA Method 8260B, Priority Pollutant
Metals, total dissolved solids, nitrate as (N), sulfate, total phosphorous, Chemical Oxygen
Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and pH. The pH readings were
measured in the field with a properly calibrated pH meter. The laboratory results for the
samples collected on August 25, 2016 are summarized in Table 1 and a copy of the ESC
laboratory report is included as Appendix A.
In Table 1, the laboratory results are compared to the current applicable NCAC 2L
groundwater or surface water standards. For the TCL VOCs, the compounds included in
the table are ones that were detected at concentrations that exceed the laboratory
detection limit. Other VOCs will be added to the table if they are detected in future
sampling events. All of the Priority Pollutant Metals and wet chemistry parameters will
be included in Table 1 regardless of the laboratory results.

TCL VOCs
As shown in Table 1, the detected concentration of 1-2-Dichloroethane in both samples
exceeds the applicable 2L Groundwater Standards. None of the other TCL VOC
compounds were detected at concentrations that exceed the 2L Groundwater Standards.
Priority Pollutant Metals
As shown in Table 1, the detected concentrations of mercury, cadmium, copper, and zinc
in the sample from Cell #1 exceed the applicable 2L Groundwater Standards. The
detected concentrations of mercury, chromium, copper, nickel, zinc, and arsenic in the
sample from Cell #2 exceed the applicable 2L Groundwater Standards.
Wet Chemistry Parameters
As shown in Table 1, the detected concentrations of total dissolved solids and COD in
both samples exceed the applicable standards. The field pH reading for Cell #2 was also
outside the specified range. Table 1 will be modified if the DEQ agency requiring the
analysis provides standards or cut-off concentrations for the specified parameters.
The leachate is pumped out and transported off-site for proper treatment and disposal by
GARCO on a regular basis and is not discharged at the site.
The next sampling event will be conducted in March/April 2017, during the spring semi-
annual sampling event for the on-site monitoring wells. The samples will be analyzed for
the parameters discussed in this report. Please review this information and call us as
