Re: RADIATION SURVEY REPORT
800 CHATHAM ROAD PROPERTY
WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA
AMEC PROJECT NO. 568940000
Dear Mr. Deakle:
AMEC Environment & Infrastructure, Inc. (AMEC) is pleased to provide this Radiation Survey
Report for 800 Chatham Road, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This report investigates whether
historical uses of the site have resulted in a radiation impact to the building and site. Included in
this report is a description of the field activities, the results obtained and AMEC’s conclusions.
PROJECT INFORMATION
The subject site consists of the Former Chatham Mill Plant located at 800 Chatham Road in
Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. The site consists of approximately six acres
which was developed in the early 1900s and is currently occupied by multi-story warehouse and
manufacturing buildings. The site has been occupied in the past by a variety of commercial and
industrial businesses.
Due to the historical use of the property for various manufacturing processes including textiles,
batteries, proximity fuses, etc., known and possible contaminants have been identified as
potential constituents of concern (COCs) at the site. The property has had a varied and
complicated history of uses over many decades including: storage and burning of coal and fuel
oil; multiple underground storage tanks (USTs); manufacturing and dyeing of wool and polyester
textiles; dry cleaning using perchloroethene; metal cleaning and plating; battery manufacturing;
paint manufacturing; metal painting using spray booths; manufacturing and testing of switches
and fuses; and manufacturing circuit boards and other electronic/ communications equipment.
In the 1970s, the property was used for general warehouse operations and sales of salvaged
equipment. From 1972 to 1995, the property was used as a records storage facility and to
house the Adele Knits company. By 2005, the property was essentially vacant and has
remained unused since then.

FIELD ACTIVITIES AND RESULTS
Kristen Lloyd, an environmental scientist with the Greensboro office, visited the site on August
9, 2012, to perform the radiation survey. The survey was conducted using a Ludlum Model 5
Geiger counter. The Ludlum Model 5 is a gamma exposure ratemeter equipped with two
internally housed, energy-compensated Geiger-Mueller detectors that measure over the range
of 0-20 mSv/h (0-2000 mR/hr). The Ludlum Model 5 operates by averaging the numbers of
events, and provides a meter showing millirems per hour (mR/hr). The equipment requires
annual calibration and was last calibrated on February 16, 2012. The calibration record is
included in Appendix A.
During the survey, each building and floor were inspected on the site. A background reading
was conducted outside in the asphalt parking area adjacent to the passageway and Building 8.
The Geiger counter exhibited a reading of 0 mR/hr for the background reading.
Results from the radiation survey are included in Table 1. The Geiger count registered a few
fluctuations (0.05 to 0.1 mR/hr) in some areas of the buildings, but the readings quickly faded
and were inconsistent. The Geiger counter remained on 0 mR/hr across the entire site. The
readings were measured at the lowest range setting on the instrument.
According to the manufacturer, low level fluctuations are common at lowest range setting due to
the presence of naturally occurring background radioactive materials such as Radon. Radon is
present in this area according to the EPA Radon Zone Map of North Carolina, and predicted to
be present indoors at a range of 2 to 4 picocuries (pCi), which would be between 2000 and
4000 mR. The action level for Radon is 4 pCi.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on the data collected, there does not appear to be any impacts of that nature at the site.
We appreciate the opportunity to assist you with this project. If you have any questions or desire
further information, please feel free to contact us at (919) 768-6240.
