Subject: April 2016 Semi-Annual Leachate Sampling Results
North Wake Subtitle D Landfill
Facility Permit No. 92-09
Dear Ms. Drummond:
CDM Smith Inc., on behalf of Wake County, is submitting an electronic copy of the April 2016
semi-annual leachate sampling results. Leachate samples were collected from the leachate sampling
station at the Wake County Subtitle D Landfill on April 21, 2016. Water quality parameters at the time
samples were collected are presented in Table 1. ALS Environmental, Inc., located in Jacksonville,
Florida, analyzed the leachate samples for North Carolina Appendix I volatile organic compounds and
metals along with biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, phosphate, nitrate, and
sulfate. Laboratory analytical results are provided in Appendix A. A copy of this report will be placed
in the operating record for this facility.
If you have any questions or require further explanation, do not hesitate to call me at 919-325-3500.
Very truly yours,
Mathew F. Colone, P.G.

All analyses were performed consistent with the quality assurance program of ALS Environmental. This report contains analytical
results for samples designated for Tier II data deliverables, including results of QC samples analyzed from this delivery group.
When appropriate to the procedure, method blank results have been reported with each analytical test. Analytical procedures
performed by the lab are validated in accordance with NELAC standards. Parameters that are included in the NELAC Fields of
Testing but are not included in the lab’s NELAC accreditation are identified in the discussion of each analytical procedure.
Sample Receipt
One aqueous leachate and one water samples were received for analysis at ALS Environmental on 4/22/2016. The samples were
received in good condition and consistent with the accompanying chain of custody form. Samples are refrigerated at <6°C upon
receipt at the lab except for aqueous samples designated for metals analyses, which are stored at room temperature.
Volatile Organic Analyses:
Method Blank JQ1603509-05 contained a low level amount of Dichloromethane above the Method Detection Limit (MDL), but less
than the Method Reporting Limit (MRL). Sample J1602926-002 exhibited Dichloromethane in approximately the same
concentration as the method blank. The data are flagged with a qualifier to indicate the results are estimated values. The method
blank results may indicate the potential for a false positive.
Method 8260B: The control criteria were exceeded for one or more surrogates in sample J1602926-002. No further corrective
action was appropriate.
Semi-Volatile Organic Analyses:
No significant data anomalies were noted with this analysis.
Metals Analyses:
The reporting limit is elevated for analyte(s) analyzed by ICP/MS in J1602926-001. These sample(s) contained high
concentrations of dissolved solids that preclude their analysis without prior dilution via this technique.
Method 6010: The Method Reporting Limit (MRL) for analyte(s) for sample(s) J1602926-001 was elevated due to high alkalinity of
the sample matrix causing a dilution to be preformed in order to preserve the sample.
General Chemistry Analyses:
No significant data anomalies were noted with this analysis.
