Subject: Monitoring Well Installation and Initial Sampling
Onslow County Subtitle D Landfill - Phase 4 Expansion
Permit No. 6709-MSWLF-1997
Dear Ming:
The purpose of this letter is to notify the Solid Waste Section (SWS) that groundwater monitoring well
MW-9 and landfill gas monitoring well M-8 have been installed down gradient of the recently
constructed Onslow County Subtitle Landfill - Phase 4 Expansion. The wells were installed and located in
accordance with the approved Water Quality Monitoring and Landfill Gas Monitoring Plans. Following
installation of the wells, initial water quality samples were collected from MW-9 and initial landfill gas
screening was completed at M-8.
Well Installation and Sampling
Elite Techniques, Inc. installed wells MW-9 and M-8 on December 19, 2016 under supervision of a CDM
Smith geologist. The wells were drilled with a track-mounted Geoprobe rig utilizing hollow-stem auger
methods. Boring logs for wells MW-9 and M-8 are included in Appendix A.
MW-9
Groundwater monitoring well CD-9 was drilled to a depth of 15 feet below ground surface. The well is
screened in the surficial water table in clayey sand and is constructed of 2-inch schedule 40 PVC with 10-
feet of pre-packed 0.010-inch slotted screen. The well was completed with an above-grade steel
protective riser and developed until visually free of sediment. A well construction summary table for the
new groundwater well along with construction information for the existing wells that monitor the active
Subtitle D Landfill is presented on Table 1. A copy of the driller’s well construction record (Form GW-1b)
is provided in Appendix A. The well was surveyed to State Plane Coordinates by a North Carolina
registered surveyor. Well location is provided on Figure 1.
An initial groundwater sample from MW-9 was collected on December 21, 2016 and submitted to Prism
Laboratories, Inc. in Charlotte, North Carolina for analysis of the North Carolina Appendix I VOC’s by EPA
Method 8260 and Appendix I metals. During sampling, three well volumes were removed from the well
and field parameters including pH, conductivity, temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and
oxidation/reduction potential were measured and recorded for each volume of water removed. Field
