Dear Ms. Drummond:
Re: Submittal of Groundwater and Surface Water Monitoring Resample Results
First Semi-Annual 2016 Event
Lake Norman Construction & Demolition Landfill
North Carolina, Permit # 55-04
On behalf of BFI Lake Norman Landfill, Inc., Jett Environmental Consulting is providing a copy of recent
resampling results for the First Semi-Annual 2016 sampling event for the Lake Norman Construction &
Demolition Landfill. The First Semi-Annual 2016 event was completed on May 17, 2016 and the summary
report was submitted to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) on September 2,
2016.
Well MW-5 went dry during the May 2016 sampling event using a Grundfos submersible pump. During the
week of September 12, 2016, the site redeveloped MW-5 and collected a resample utilizing a peristaltic pump
for low flow purging/sampling. The site also resampled surface water point SW-2 for total metals, which
exhibited elevated field turbidity and total metals during the First Semi-Annual 2016 event. The September
2016 resampling event results were completed by the laboratory on October 6, 2016. Groundwater and surface
water sampling was performed by Pace Analytical Services, Inc. and analytical testing was also performed by
Pace Analytical Services, Inc. Included in Attachment A is a copy of the laboratory analytical report and field
information forms for the September 2016 resampling event.
A summary of the inorganic results for the First Semi-Annual 2016 event (May 2016) and the September 2016
resampling event is available on Table 1. During the September 2016 event, the only NC 2L Standard
confirmed to be exceeded was total manganese at MW-5.
The September 2016 total manganese concentration at MW-5 (945 ug/L) was consistent with historical total
manganese concentrations at MW-3 (17.3 to 989 ug/L) and MW-5 (763 to 940 ug/L), respectively. The total
manganese concentration in groundwater well MW-5 appears to be attributable to naturally occurring conditions at
the site and not related to the landfill.
The site will continue in Assessment Monitoring through the next semi-annual event, which is tentatively
scheduled for November 2016. If no detections are considered attributable to the landfill during the next semi-
annual event, then the site may request a return to Detection Monitoring.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Mike Gurley at (704) 262-6019 or Steve Jett at
(314) 496-4654.

Sincerely,
Steve Jett, LG #1825
