Re: Dan River Steam Station
Landfill Permit No.: 7906-INDUS
Notice of Intent to Relocate CCR Material
Dear Mr. Frost,
Excavation of Coal Combustion Residual (CCR) material from the Duke Energy Dan River
Steam Station has been ongoing per the North Carolina Coal Ash Management Act for greater than one year. During that time, 1,202,548 tons of CCR material has been excavated and
transported by truck or rail to off-site facilities for beneficial use or disposal in a lined landfill.
As construction of the onsite landfill continues, the project team intends to relocate
approximately 130,000 cubic yards of CCR material from the Ash Stack 1 area to the Primary
Ash Basin. This process is necessary in order to comply with Attachment 1, Guidance for Area 1 Dry Stack received from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ)
Division of Waste Management on October 11, 2016. This work is intended to commence early
April 2017 with completion estimated at the end of May 2017. Material placed in the basin
footprint will be compacted for stabilization.
Concurrence to perform this work was received from the NCDEQ Division of Water Resources
on March 14, 2017. This letter serves to inform the NCDEQ Division of Waste Management of
the intent to relocate CCR material to the Primary Ash Basin.
Duke Energy is committed to excellent environmental stewardship and cooperation with the NCDEQ regarding the operation, maintenance, safety, and integrity of all of its facilities. We
look forward to continuing to work with you regarding environmental concerns.
