Pitt County MSW Landfill (Northern and Southern)
Pitt County
Solid Waste Permit Number 74-01
DIN 27529
Dear Mr. Demary:
The NC Solid Waste Section has completed a review of the Proposal for Assessment of Benzene
Contamination Migration dated March 15, 2017 (DIN 27528) submitted on your behalf by Groundwater
Management Associates, Inc. (GMA) for the closed Pitt County MSW Landfill, NC Solid Waste Permit
Number 6013. During the January 2017 semiannual water quality monitoring event benzene was
detected at concentrations exceeding the NC 2L Groundwater Standards in two groundwater monitoring
wells.
Based upon the groundwater exceedances, Pitt County is requesting to collect two pore water samples
from the beneath the southern boundary ditch and analyze for Appendix I constituents. The proposed
sampling locations are located down gradient of groundwater monitoring well P20R during for the July
2017 semiannual water quality monitoring event.
As a result, the Proposal for Assessment of Benzene Contamination Migration is approved as described. If
you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email at jaclynne.drummond@ncdenr.gov or
by phone at 828.296.4706. Thank you for your continued cooperation with this matter.
Sincerely,
Jaclynne Drummond
