Re: CCR Well Drilling Request
Duke Energy Carolinas - Dan River Steam Station Permit No. 7906-INDUS Rockingham County
Dear Ms. Werner,
Duke Energy Carolinas (DEC), Dan River Steam Station, requests concurrence from North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Division of Waste Management (Division) for drilling at the Dan River Steam Station Landfill (Permit No. 7906-INDUS). This drilling request is in effort to satisfy
USEPA Hazardous and Solid Waste Management System; Disposal of Coal Combustion Residuals From Electric Utilities (USEPA CCR) 40CFR Part 257.91.
On February 28, 2017, Duke Energy received approved from NCDEQ Solid Waste to install background well pair BW-2S/D. Additionally, sixteen (16) wells are intended to be installed in the approximate locations
shown on the attached drawings titled " Proposed CCR Monitoring Well Locations - Dan River Landfill
Construction". Upon completion of monitoring well installation, Duke Energy will submit a well installation completion package to the Division noting actual well locations and depths including drilling logs.
Per the approved waiver by the Division on February 28, 2017, a Professional Geologist (P.G.) familiar with the geology and layout of the facility, will be on call throughout drilling. A field technician, under the
supervision of the P.G., will be present throughout drilling. Additionally, Duke will provide the Division a copy of the annual CCR Groundwater Monitoring Report.
This request is being submitted electronically. Please let me know if you would like to receive paper copies.
Respectfully submitted,
Melonie Martin
