1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Site Information
The subject site is the former Carolina Medical Equipment (CME) facility located at 157
Industrial Drive in King, North Carolina (see Drawing 1). The site is occupied with one building
and consists of approximately four acres. The property is situated to the west of Industrial Dive
and the Town of King.
The site was developed in 1967 and was primarily used to manufacture printed circuit boards.
In 1977 as part of the process, a septic system was installed to the handle solvent washings
from the fabrication of printed circuit boards. The system consisted of a 100 gallon concrete
holding tank which was used for Ph adjustment and metal precipitation. The tank was drained
to a 200 gallon tank and associated leach lines. The system was operated under a North
Carolina Waste Disposal Permit.
2 RECEPTOR SURVEY
A receptor survey was conducted by MSE in late 2009 and updated in August 2012. The
following summarizes the survey results, as well as additional data obtained during recent field
activities.
2.1 Water Supply Wells
A receptor survey was conducted in late 2009 to locate water-supply wells within 1,500 feet of the
site. A total of five water supply wells were located during the survey (see Drawing 2). Two
apparently unused wells are located on a property immediately and to the southwest of the site. A
third well is located approximately 1,350 feet further to the west and according to Scott Barlow
with the Town of King the well is being used as a source of drinking water. A residence adjacent to
the previously mentioned well also has a well. It is our understanding the residence is connected to
Town water (according to Mr. Barlow). However the well is functional. It appears that the Town of
King water supply is available to all residences within 1500 feet. A fifth well may be present at a
farm house located to the north of the site and is greater than 1500 feet from the site. A visible
well has not been identified at the site but due to the age it is possible one exist on the property. A
fire hydrate was present in front of the house indicating municipal water lines are present.
The receptor survey was updated on August 14, 2012. The two unused wells previously located on
the adjoining property were abandoned in 2010 using concrete (see Appendix A). Several wells
were identified more than 4,000 feet from the site. These wells are located along Newsom Road

and are due west of the site. Two wells were identified to the north and are more than 4,000 feet
from the site and located along Meadowbrook Drive.
2.2 Public Water Supply
Public water supply is available to all residents and businesses in the area. However, as mentioned
above, there is the potential that water-supply wells may be present and used for drinking or other
purposes.
2.3 Surface Water
There are two unnamed creeks present within 1,500 feet (see Drawing 1) of the site and these
streams drain to larger ponds and ultimately to a larger creek to the north. One stream is located
approximately 800 feet to the south and west of the site. The second stream is located across
Highway 52 and approximately 1,000 feet to the east and north of the site.
2.4 Wellhead Protection Areas
According to the North Carolina Division of Public Health, Public Water Supply Section (Public
Water Supply) website, there are no wellhead protection plans currently approved for Stokes
County.
2.5 Coastal Plain Physiographic Province
According to the Geologic Map of North Carolina, published by the North Carolina Department
of Environment and Natural Resources, the site is not located within the Coastal Plain
Physiographic Province.
2.6 Subsurface Structures
The site is served by the Town of King public water therefore water lines are present on site and
underground. Also present and underground are the electric, telephone and cable lines. The facility
disposes of it’s domestic waste in an onsite septic system with associated leachfields located to the
south of the property. No basements or other areas of public assembly are located within 500 feet
of the subject site.
2.7 Surrounding Land Use
The site is bounded to the north and east by Industrial Drive and Highway 52. The property
located to the southeast is occupied with an abandoned building. A large tract of land previously
used as a farm is located to the south and west. An abandoned residence and barns are located on
the property. The bulk of the farm is fallowed. A residential development and commercial
businesses are located to the north and northwest.
