Dear Kim, 

The Division of Waste Management, Solid Waste Section (Section) has reviewed your email request to install a new 
background well pair (BW‐2S/D) at the Dan River Steam Station (DIN 27456).  The Section approves this well installation 
request.   

Duke requests a waiver for Permit Condition Attachment 3, Part 1, #11 requiring a licensed geologist be present to 
supervise the installation of groundwater monitoring wells.  In lieu of the requirement, Duke will have a Professional 
Geologist (P.G.) familiar with the facility on call during drilling activities.   A field technician, under the supervision of a 
P.G., will be present throughout the drilling activities.  The Section grants this waiver request.     

Duke also requests a waiver for Permit Condition Attachment 3, Part IV, #17 requiring all well construction records and 
boring logs to be submitted to the Section Hydrogeologist within 30 days of well installation.  Duke proposes to submit 
the construction records and boring logs for the newly installed wells in the pre‐operational groundwater report. The 
Section grants this waiver request.
