Subject: Request for Constructed Wetlands Soils Disposal, Approval
Permit No. 8504-INDUS-, Belews Creek Craig Rd Landfill
Stokes County, DIN 27337
Dear Ms. Hutchinson:
On February 1, 2017 the Division of Waste Management, Solid Waste Section (Section) received
Duke Energy’s request, entitled;
Request to Permit Constructed Wetlands Soil for Disposal, Belews Creek Steam Station Craig Road
Ash Landfill, (Permit No. 8504-INDUS), Stokes County, North Carolina. Prepared by Duke Energy.
February 2017. DIN 27336.
The request concerns Duke Energy’s plan for disposal of material removed from the constructed
wetlands treatment system and includes; the sand filter layer and the clay layer. Duke Energy’s
proposed use is in Phase 1 of the Craig Road landfill, Permit No. 8504-INDUS-, to cover
exposed ash as well as enhance drainage to chimney drains.
The Section has reviewed the request and hereby approves the immediate implementation of the
plan at Duke Energy’s, Belews Creek Steam Station, Craig Road landfill. Duke Energy shall
consider the referenced request (DIN 27336) as an approved document. Should Duke Energy
determine that the described material will be regularly disposed of in the Craig Road landfill then
the next time the Facility prepares either a permit amendment or modification it should submit an
updated operations plan which includes the approved soil disposal.
