Landfill Gas Monitoring Report – Third Quarter 2016
JOYCE Project No. 277.1601.12, Task 04
Dear Mr. Hollifield;
The purpose of this letter is to provide you with the results for the third quarter 2016 landfill gas
monitoring event at the closed East Burke Landfill. This was the fifth landfill gas monitoring event for
this facility. Gas probes GP-1, GP-2, GP-3, GP-4, GP-5, and GP-6, which were installed in June 2015,
were monitored on May 19, 2016. During the August 2016 monitoring event, methane was detected
above the lower explosive limit (LEL) in gas probes GP-1, GP-3, and GP-4. No exceedances were
recorded for any of the other probes. These results are consistent with previous results.
Tables 1 and 2 summarize the methane detections and exceedances for this event, and the
attached Landfill Gas Monitoring Log presents the more detailed results. A site map showing the gas
probe locations is also attached. We have included an EMRF and will forward a copy of this report to
Jaclynne Drummond with the NCDEQ Solid Waste Section. This report should be added to the
facility’s records.
A Landfill Gas Remediation Plan for this facility was submitted on September 14, 2015, and
was approved on September 18, 2015. As proposed, the three passive landfill gas vents were installed
on the site on May 19, 2016. A replacement probe for GP-1, GP-1B, was installed on June 28, 2016.
Due to an oversight GP-1B was not monitored on August 23; however, it will be monitored in the near
future. The next quarterly monitoring event is tentatively scheduled for December 2016. If we can
provide any additional information, please do not hesitate to call me at (336) 323-0092.
Sincerely,
JOYCE ENGINEERING
