Re: Request to Replace Monitoring Well MW-50R
Alamance County Subtitle D Lined MSWLF
Permit No. 01-04
MESCO Project No. G16133.0
Dear Ms. Werner:
On behalf of Alamance County, Municipal Engineering Services Company, P.A. (MESCO) is requesting Solid Waste
Section (SWS) approval for replacement of monitoring well MW-50R. MW-50R is the background well located
hydraulically upgradient of the active Subtitle D Lined MSWLF. MW-50R is located within the footprint of future
Phase 3 which will be a horizontal expansion in a northern direction. In order to establish background water quality
for the life of the site we propose to replace MW-50R to a location that is background for the next three phases which
will be developed over at least the next 50 years. We request that MW-50R be replaced with MW-BG near the
location as shown on Figure 1.
MW-50R will be sealed in place with grout in accordance with 15A NCAC 2C.0113 (d) entitled “Abandonment of
Wells” using bentonite grout.
Proposed MW-BG will be installed per the requirements of 15A NCAC 02C. Proposed MW-BG will be screened to
transect the top of the water table with a maximum 15 foot screen, not penetrate any confining layers, and maintain 5
feet separation between ground and sand pack.
MW-BG is proposed to be terminated at an approximate elevation of 516 feet amsl or 40 feet below ground .
Following installation and abandonment the required documentation (well abandonment and well construction records)
will be submitted in electronic format to the SWS. Once MW-BG is installed and surveyed the Water Quality
Monitoring Plan will be updated reflecting the well replacement. MW-BG is planned to commence semi-annual
monitoring during the next event scheduled for February 2017.
