1.0 INTRODUCTION
I. I Site Location
This report was prepared for Product Recovery Management and is the Underground
Storage Tank (UST) Closure Assessment that was performed on December 30, 1997 at
the former Hendrick Chevrolet facility located on East Market Street, Durham, Durham
County, NC. The site is located along East Market Street, in a commercial area of
Durham, NC. Figure I, Site Vicinity Map, illustrates the general site location on the
USGS 7.5 minute series topographic map. Fib'llre 2 illustrates the Site Plan. Figure 3
illustrates the tanks orientation, soil sample locations. The Notification ofintent to Close
is provided as Appendix A.
1.2 Facility Description
The subject site formerly operated as a car dealership, and is owned by GWC properties
located in Durham, NC. There have been no other known past releases at the facility,
and the tanks were active. Appendix B provides the Site Investigation Report for
Permanent Closure or Change in Service of UST. Figure 2 identifies the former site
features, the utilities in the immediate area, and illustrates the location of the former
UST's. 1 2,000 gallon capacity fiberglass UST, which reportedly stored used oil and I
6,000 gallon capacity fiberglass UST, which reportedly stored gasoline were removed
from the property. The UST's were removed, stenciled and hauled off site by Charlie
Miller Backhoe & Hauling, Inc., Youngsville, NC for disposal by the same. The UST
Destruction and Disposal Certificate is provided as Appendix C. Table I provides a
listing of Project Contacts. Table 2 is a summary of the UST information. A vehicular
water well survey was conducted for private potable wells.
2.0 FIELD ACTIVITIES
2.1 UST System Removal Activities
UST system removal activities were conducted on December 30, 1997. PRM was
responsible for the UST excavation and major reconstruction activities for the site. A
trackhoe was used for excavation and removal of the UST's. Groundwater was
encountered during excavation activities for the used oil UST at a approximate depth of
3.0 feet Below Grade Level (BGL). Free product was observed in the used oil tank basin.
Groundwater was not encountered during the gasoline UST removal. Bedrock was not
encountered during excavation activities at any depth. The UST' s were buried
approximately 2.0 feet BGL.
Approximately 1522 gallons of groundwater and free product were pumped from the
used oil excavation before removal of the tank. A & D environmental and Industrial
Services, Inc. of High Point, NC pumped and disposed of the material.
2.2 Groundwater and Soil Sample Collection
Two soil samples were collected from beneath the gasoline UST in accordance with
NC Department of Environmental Management (NCDEM) guidelines and the Scope of
Work for this project. A composite sample was taken from the soil stockpile from the
used oil excavation.
Backfill material appeared to consist of a medium sand. The soil samples were sealed in
the appropriate laboratory provided containers and placed on ice.
3.0 LABORATORY ANALYSIS
The collected soil samples collected during UST removal activities, were submitted to
Paradigm Analytical Laboratories, Wilmington, NC.
The soil samples beneath the gasoline tank were submitted for laboratory analysis Total
Petroleum Hydrocarbons by EPA method 5030. Laboratory analysis of soil samples Tl-
Fill and Tl-Sue showed less than 8 mg/kg and 11 mg/kg total petroleum hydrocarbons
respectively. The composite soil sample taken from the stockpile removed from the used
oil UST basin was taken and analyzed for volatiles by EPA method 8021, Oil and Grease
by method 9071 and TCLP Metals. The analysis revealed Oil and Grease at 350
mg/kg,lead at 23.9 ug/I and below detection limits for the volatile compounds by EPA
method 8021.
The laboratory analytical results and Chain of Custody are included as Appendix D.
Table 4 summarizes the reported soil constituents.
4.0 SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
The writer has completed the underground storage tank closure assessment of the subject
property at the former Hendrick Chevrolet facility located in Durham, NC. Based on
field activities, site observations, and subsequent laboratory analyses of the groundwater
sample, the following is concluded:
• Laboratory analysis of soil sample T-1 Sue indicated a TPH GRO level of 11 mg/kg.
This level exceeds the NCDEM action level of 10 mg/kg.
• Soil analysis of the used oil stockpile revealed an oil and grease level of 350 mg/kg.
• A Light Non Aqueous Phase Liquid was present floating on the water table within the
used oil tank pit.
5.0 LIMITATIONS
This report is based on the collection of one groundwater sample and subsequent
chemical analyses. The conclusions presented in this report are based only on the
observation made during this investigation and on data provided by others.
The report presents a description of the subsurface conditions observed at each
excavation location during this investigation.
Subsurface conditions may vary significantly with time, particularly with respect to
groundwater elevations and quality. Conclusions and recommendations set forth herein
are applicable only to the facts and conditions described at the time of this report.
In performing its professional services, this writer uses that degree of care and skill
exercised under similar circumstances by members of the environmental profession
practicing at the same or similar locality under similar conditions.
