2.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
ATC Associates of North Carolina, P.C. (ATC) has completed a Groundwater Monitoring Report for the
Former Conoco Store #33074. This report documents the groundwater sampling activities conducted at the
site in August 2024.
The former Conoco Store #33074 is located at 4032 High Point Road in Greensboro, Guilford County, North
Carolina. The site is developed with one single-story convenience store building and fuel island canopy.
The site currently operates as Quick Food Mart service station and is owned by Sam’s Mart, LLC. Four
USTs are currently active at the site, three 10,000-gallon gasoline USTs and one 3,000-gallon kerosene
UST. Eight monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-7, and MW-1D) are associated with the incident at the site.
On August 20, 2024, ATC personnel mobilized to the site to collect groundwater samples from MW-1, MW-
1D, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, MW-5, MW-6, and MW-7. Light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) was not
detected during the event. Chemicals of concern (COCs) were detected above the Title 15A NCAC 02L
.0202 Groundwater Quality Standards (2L Standards) in wells MW-1, MW-1D, MW-2, MW-5, MW-6, and
MW-7. Benzene was detected above the Gross Contamination Level (GCL) in monitoring well MW-5.
Monitoring well MW-3 did not exhibit COCs exceeding applicable 2L Standards.
Overall, the petroleum impacted plume remains stable. The total benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total
xylenes (BTEX) concentration in well MW-5 has increased since the previous sampling event which was
conducted in October 2023. The benzene concentration in well MW-5 continues to exceed the
corresponding GCL. In addition, the continual presence of oxygenates in groundwater samples may be
indicative of a new release from the current operations. ATC recommends the continuation of air sparge
(AS) enhanced aggressive fluid vapor recovery (AFVR) events to further reduce dissolved constituent
concentrations at the site. Additionally, ATC recommends the installation of an additional air sparge well
near MW-5 to facilitate the reduction of the GCLs.

3.0 INTRODUCTION
ATC Associates of North Carolina, P.C. (ATC) was retained by Phillips 66 Company to conduct site
monitoring activities at Former Conoco Store #33074 (Incident No. 14449). The site is located at 4302 High
Point Road in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina. The site currently operates as a Quick Food
Mart service station and is owned by Sam’s Mart, LLC. A site topographic map is presented as Figure 1
and a site map is presented as Figure 2.
4.0 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
On October 3, 1990, Du Pont Environmental Remediation Services, Inc. (Du Pont) submitted an
Underground Storage Tank Removal Report. The report documented the removal of three 12,000-gallon
and one 6,000-gallon underground storage tanks (USTs). Based on laboratory analytical data, Du Pont
concluded all contaminated soils had been removed from the site and no further action was necessary.
In August 1990, three 10,000-gallon gasoline USTs and one 3,000-gallon kerosene UST were installed at
the site.
Brown and Root Environmental (Brown & Root) submitted a Preliminary Site Assessment (PSA) on July
21, 1995, in response to a petroleum release discovered on July 12, 1995. During the PSA, seven soil
borings were advanced. The soil samples indicated the soil had been impacted by the release above North
Carolina Standards. The activities were also documented in an Initial Abatement Measures and Site Check
Report submitted by Brown & Root on October 3, 1995.
TetraTech NUS (TetraTech) installed monitoring well MW-1 on February 10, 1999, during Phase I Limited
Site Assessment (LSA) activities. TetraTech also conducted a receptor survey and reported no water supply
wells were located within 1,000 feet of the site and no surface water bodies were found within 500 feet of
the site. Based on laboratory results, TetraTech requested no further action based on the LSA investigation.
On May 12, 1999, TetraTech submitted a Preliminary Exposure Pathway Assessment Report (PEPA) to
Conoco, Inc. Based on the PEPA Report; no receptors were identified within 1,000 feet of the site.
On August 12, 1999, the Guilford County Department of Public Health requested the installation of a
monitoring well in the vicinity of the dispensers on the east side of the site due to elevated benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) concentrations. A Phase I LSA Supplement Report was submitted by
DAHL and Associates, Inc. (DAHL) on January 11, 2000. The report indicated that due to benzene
exceeding the Gross Contamination Levels (GCLs), the site should be classified as an intermediate risk.
On January 28, 2000, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ, formerly the North
Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources) issued a Notice of Report Receipt (NORR)
requesting the preparation of a Comprehensive Site Assessment (CSA); however, prior to the CSA, DAHL
completed Phase II LSA activities at the site which included the installation of two shallow monitoring wells
(MW-3 and MW-4) and a deep monitoring well (MW-1D). A Phase II LSA was submitted to NCDEQ on June
29, 2000.
In September 2000, EPOCH Environmental Group, LLC (EPOCH) purchased DAHL and continued with
site investigation activities. On May 15, 2002, EPOCH submitted a CSA, which included the advancement
of MW-5, MW-6, and MW-7. Based on the analytical results from the CSA no COCs were detected in the
soil samples above the Residential Maximum Soil Contaminant Concentrations (MSCCs). Groundwater
analytical results indicated BTEX, methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), and naphthalene above the NCDEQ
2L Standards.
In September 2003, ATC was retained by ConocoPhillips to continue environmental assessment and
remediation services at the site. ATC submitted a Groundwater Sampling Report on July 6, 2005.
Laboratory results indicated benzene exceeded GCLs in monitoring wells MW-2 and MW-5.

In April 2011, ATC was awarded the ConocoPhillips contract to continue groundwater monitoring activities
at the site. On May 1, 2012, ConocoPhillips separated into two companies, ConocoPhillips and Phillips 66
Company. Phillips 66 Company manages the environmental activities associated with this site.
In May 2012, a receptor survey was conducted by ATC during a groundwater sampling event. Based on
ATC’s findings, it appears there are no water supply wells or surface water bodies within 1,000 feet of the
site. A Monitoring Report documenting the survey was submitted on July 12, 2012.
ATC performed aggressive fluid vapor recovery (AFVR) events at the site in January 2013, February 2013,
and March 2013, in order to reduce contaminant concentrations in groundwater. A sampling event was
conducted in April 2013. Based on the analytical results, the AFVR events were effective in reducing
concentrations in groundwater. A Groundwater Monitoring Report was submitted on June 26, 2013,
documenting the AFVR events and sampling event.
On July 25, 2013, Greensboro Water Department (GWD) officials noted high lower explosive limit (LEL)
levels in a sewer manhole near the site. Subsequent investigations identified light non-aqueous phase liquid
(LNAPL) in an abandoned sewer lateral near the northeast portion of the site. The sewer lateral was
disconnected from the sewer main on July 30, 2013, and was capped on August 7, 2013, by GWD
personnel. The current UST operator submitted a 24-hour Release and UST Leak Reporting Form (UST-
61) to NCDEQ on July 26, 2013.
On July 27, 2013, a Tank and Line Tightness Test identified a leak in the regular gasoline product line. The
product line was repaired and passed a subsequent line test on August 16, 2013. On August 13, 2013,
NCDEQ issued a NORR to Sam’s Mart requesting the preparation of a Site Check Report. On January 14,
2014, a Site Check Report was submitted to NCDEQ by Groundwater Environmental Services, Inc. (GES)
documenting the results of the investigation. Soil laboratory analytical results indicated that total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH) gasoline range organics (GRO), TPH diesel range organics (DRO), benzene, toluene,
xylenes and methylene chloride exceeded their respective Soil-to-Groundwater MSCCs. Groundwater
analytical results from newly installed monitoring well SM-MW-1 indicated petroleum constituents above
the 2L Standard but below the GCLs. LNAPL was not detected during the investigation.
ATC performed AFVR events at the site in January 2015 and March 2015 in order to reduce contaminant
concentrations in groundwater. A sampling event was conducted in April 2015. Based on the analytical
results, the AFVR events were effective in reducing concentrations in groundwater. A Groundwater
Monitoring Report was submitted on July 14, 2015, documenting the AFVR events and sampling event.
ATC performed a groundwater sampling event on October 6, 2016. Groundwater analytical results indicated
numerous petroleum compounds exceeded 2L Standards. Additionally, benzene concentrations exceeded
the GCL in MW-5. A Groundwater Monitoring Report was submitted on January 25, 2017, documenting the
sampling event.
ATC performed four AFVR events at the site in December 2016, January 2017, February 2017, and April
2017, and a groundwater sampling event was conducted in May 2017. Based on the analytical results, the
AFVR events were effective in reducing concentrations in groundwater. A Groundwater Monitoring Report
was submitted on June 22, 2017, documenting the AFVR events and sampling event.
On March 6, 2018, ATC submitted a report documenting the installation of two air sparge wells (AS-1 and
AS-2), four air sparge-enhanced AFVR events conducted on August 31, 2017, September 28, 2017,
November 2, 2017, and November 30, 2017, and the groundwater sampling event conducted in December
2017.
On January 3, 2019, ATC submitted a report documenting the results of an air sparge-enhanced AFVR
event conducted on July 10, 2018, and the groundwater sampling event conducted in September 2018.

On July 29, 2019, ATC submitted a report documenting the results of air sparge-enhanced AFVR events
conducted on March 6, 2019, April 18, 2019, and May 30, 2019, and the groundwater sampling event
conducted in June 2019.
On January 30, 2020, ATC submitted a report documenting the results of an air sparge-enhanced AFVR
event conducted on August 14, 2019, and the groundwater sampling event conducted in December 2019.
The enhanced air sparge AFVR events have been successful in reducing the benzene concentrations in
MW-2 and in MW-5.
On April 23, 2020, ATC submitted a report documenting the results of a groundwater sampling event
conducted in March 2020. Laboratory analysis indicated that the benzene concentrations rebounded in
MW-5 above the GCLs.
On September 2, 2020, ATC submitted a report documenting the results of a groundwater sampling event
conducted in June 2020. Laboratory analysis indicated that the benzene concentrations exceeded GCLs,
but the impacted plume is stable.
On March 11, 2021, ATC submitted a report documenting the results of a groundwater sampling event
conducted in December 2020. Overall, petroleum impacted plume is stable; however, the VOC
concentrations in MW-5 have increased since the previous sampling event.
On October 12, 2021, ATC submitted a report documenting the results of a groundwater sampling event
conducted in July 2021. Overall, petroleum impacted plume is stable; however, the VOC concentrations in
MW-5 have increased since the previous sampling event.
On April 12, 2022, ATC submitted a report documenting the results of a groundwater sampling event
conducted in February 2022. Overall, the petroleum-impacted groundwater plume remains stable. The
results of the sampling event indicated that VOC concentrations in MW-5 had decreased since the previous
sampling event. However, the benzene concentration in MW-5 continued to exceed the applicable GCL.
On December 5, 2023, ATC submitted a report documenting the results of a groundwater sampling event
conducted in October 2023. Overall, the petroleum-impacted groundwater plume remains stable. The
results of the sampling event indicated that the total BTEX concentration in MW-5 had increased slightly
since the previous sampling event. The benzene concentration in MW-5 continued to exceed the applicable
GCL.
This report documents the groundwater sampling event conducted in August 2024.
5.0 GROUNDWATER CHARACTERIZATION
5.1 GROUNDWATER LEVELS
On August 20, 2024, groundwater levels were measured in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-1D, MW-2, MW-
3, MW-5, MW-6, and MW-7. MW-4 was unable to be measured due to a food truck blocking access to the
well vault. Depth to water was measured from the top of each well casing. Monitoring well construction
details are included in Table 1. The depth to groundwater from ground surface across the site varied from
7.05 feet in MW-1 to 11.76 feet in MW-5. Groundwater elevations for the sampling event are listed in Table
1. Figure 3 presents the groundwater elevation contour map. As shown in Figure 3, inferred groundwater
flow within the surficial aquifer is to the south which is consistent with the historical groundwater flow pattern.
5.2 GROUNDWATER QUALITY
Prior to sampling, a minimum of three well volumes of groundwater were removed from each monitoring
well. A dedicated disposable one-liter plastic bailer was used to obtain each groundwater sample. The

samples were then placed in an appropriate container, properly labeled, and preserved on ice. The samples
were transported under chain of custody to SGS North America Inc. in Scott, Louisiana and were analyzed
for volatile organic compounds including ethanol and oxygenates by EPA Method 6200B. Oxygenates were
analyzed due to the active UST system and to monitor for potential trends.
The laboratory analytical report for the August 2024 sampling event indicated the following chemical
compounds exceeded the corresponding 2L Standards:
Benzene: MW-1, MW-2, MW-5, and MW-6;
Toluene: MW-2 and MW-5;
Ethylbenzene: MW-2 and MW-5;
Total Xylenes: MW-2 and MW-5;
MTBE: MW-1D, MW-2, and MW-5;
Naphthalene: MW-2, MW-5, and MW-6;
1,2-Dichloroethane: MW-7;
Di-isopropyl ether: MW-5;
Isopropylbenzene: MW-2 and MW-5;
Methylene chloride: MW-2 and MW-5;
n-Propylbenzene: MW-2 and MW-5;
Tert-Amyl Alcohol: MW-1, MW-1D, MW-2 and MW-5;
Tert-Butyl Alcohol: MW-1, MW-1D, MW-5, and MW-7;
1,2,3-Trichloropropane: MW-6;
1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene: MW-2 and MW-5; and
1,3,5-Trimethylbenzene: MW-2 and MW-5.
Monitoring well MW-5 exceeded the GCL for benzene during this sampling event. The laboratory analytical
results for the August 2024 sampling event are summarized in Table 2. Historical groundwater analytical
results are summarized in Table 3. The oxygenate concentrations in the shallow groundwater monitoring
wells are mostly consistent with results from previous sampling events. The continual presence of the
oxygenates may be indicative of a new release from the current operations. An isoconcentration contour
map for dissolved benzene is included as Figure 4. Other COCs in groundwater are shown in Figure 5.
Concentration versus time graphs are included as Figure 6. The laboratory report is included in Appendix
A.
As part of ATC’s quality assurance and quality control (QA and QC) measures, a data review of the
laboratory report was conducted. During the review, it was concluded that samples were received by the
laboratory in acceptable condition and properly preserved. The samples were analyzed within the correct
holding times. The chain of custody was properly completed by all parties. Refer to the laboratory report in
Appendix A for details regarding QA results for the laboratory samples and any noted exceptions. Overall,
ATC concludes that the laboratory results are usable and any exceptions do not significantly impact the
conclusions presented in this report.
6.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
ATC has performed a groundwater sampling event at the Former Conoco Store #33074 Greensboro, North
Carolina. Based on field activities, observations, and groundwater analytical results, ATC concludes the
following:
The groundwater flow direction at the site is inferred to flow to the south within the surficial aquifer;
The groundwater analytical results indicated 16 COCs exceeded 2L Standards;
Benzene exceeded the GCL in well MW-5; and
