1.0 INTRODUCTION
This is the Tank Excavation Assessment Report for the closure of five
(5) underground storage tanks (USTs) at Taylor's Exxon in Nashville,
North Carolina. This site is owned by Mr. Wayne Taylor, and is
operated as a retail fueling facility.
The site is located at the intersection of Eastern Avenue (US 64
Business) and Washington Street in Nashville. The property is
approximately 0.75 acre in size. The site is covered by asphalt and
concrete. The property is relatively flat, as is the regional
topography.
The adjacent property occupants consist primarily of commercial
facilities and retail businesses. Other UST facilities are located
along Eastern Avenue within 1500 feet of the site. The site is
served by private well, while all other properties in the area are
served by public water supply.
2.0 EXCAVATION PROCESS
The removal of the USTs was conducted by Bass Electric Co., lnc. of
Rocky Mount, North Carolina on May 16-17, 1994. The excavation was
conducted using a JSW BH65 trackhoe and a rubber tire backhoe.
After removing the 6'' concrete pad on top of the USTs, the contractor
then began removing the native soil backfill from around the gasoline
USTs. The backfill material that was removed was stockpiled on
plastic on an adjacent property owner by Mr. Taylor. After
sufficient quantities of the backfill rnaterial were removed, the fill
pipes, product lines, and vent lines were disconnected from the USTs.
The USTs were lifted from the excavation by placing a chain through
the lifting eye in the top of each UST. After the USTs were removed,
the remaining backfill material was removed from the excavation to
facilitate the installation of two (2) new fiberglass USTs, as well
as to allow soil samples to be taken in the native soil beneath the
USTs.
Once the gasoline USTs were removed, the contractor began removing
the native soil backfill from around the used oil UST. The backfill
that was removed was stockpiled on plastic on an adjacent property
owned by Mr. Taylor.
After sufficient quantities of the backfill material were removed,
the fill pipe, vent line, and drain line were disconnected from the
UST. The UST was lifted from the excavation by placing a chain
through the lifting eye in the top of the UST. After the UST was
removed, the remaining backfill material was removed from the
excavation to facilitate the installation of one (1) fiberglass
coated steel UST, as well as to allow soil samples to be taken in the
native soil beneath the UST.

After removal of the USTs had been completed, the contractor
excavated and removed the product piping. The new fiberglass product
piping was installed in the existing excavation once sampling was
completed.
The stockpiled soils from the UST excavations, approximately 250
tons, remain stockpiled on an adjacent property owned by Mr. Taylor.
3.0 TANK CONDITION
Four (4) 6,000 gallon single-wall steel USTs were removed from the
excavation along the western property boundary. These USTs were used
to store Exxon Regular unleaded, Plus unleaded, Supreme unleaded, and
Diesel products. One (1) 2,000 gallon single-wall steel UST, used to
store Used oil was removed from the excavation along the rear of the
building. These five {5) USTs were removed as part of the planned
UST upgrade at this location. All of the USTs were approximately
twenty-three {23) years old.
The 6,000 gallon USTs were 96'' in diameter and were 16' long, with
36" burial depths. The one (1) 2,000 gallon UST was 64" in diameter
and was 12' long, with a 36" burial depth. The USTs appeared to be
in good condition, while all showed signs of spill and overfill at
the fill pipes.
Once the condition of the USTs was assessed, all of the USTs were
properly labeled and loaded onto a flatbed truck and taken to Holland
Demolition, in Rocky Mount, for disposal.
Groundwater was encountered in the gasoline UST excavation at a depth
of 14' below grade, and there were no releases observed during the
removal process.
4.0 SAMPLE COLLECTION PROCESS
The backfill and native soils from the excavation were collected and
screened in accordance with NC DEHNR guidelines. Each sample was
collected using a clean, stainless steel sampling spoon and split
evenly to perform photoionization screening with a Gastech
hydrocarbon sensor, while the other half was preserved for possible
analytical testing.

The soil samples retrieved from the trackhoe bucket were visually
inspected by a field engineer. The samples to be scanned with the
Gastech hydrocarbon sensor were placed in glass jars to approximately
one-half full and covered with aluminum foil for sealing purposes.
The jars were then placed out of direct sunlight for approximately
twenty (20) minutes to allow the soil vapors time to reach
equilibrium. After sufficient time had elapsed, the probe of the
Gastech sensor was inserted into the head space of each jar and the
vapor concentration was measured and recorded. The results of this
scanning are contained in Table 1.
Upon completion of the field scanning, soil samples were taken from
two (2) feet below the USTs, and the product piping, in native soil
per NC DEHNR protocol. The samples were placed into separate glass
jars, with Teflon-lined screw-on lids, using a clean sampling spoon.
These jars were then placed on ice in an insulated cooler and shipped
to Hydrologic, Inc., in Morrisville, NC, on May 19 and 25, 1994. The
soil samples from beneath the gasoline USTs and product piping were
tested for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) by GC using EPA method
5030, while the soil samples from beneath the used oil UST were
tested for Oil and Grease using EPA method 9071 and EPA method 8021.
Groundwater samples were also obtained from the gasoline UST
excavation per NC DEHNR protocol. These samples were also shipped to
Hydrologic, Inc., in Morrisville, NC, on May 19, 1994. The samples
were tested using EPA method 601, 602, 625, and 3030C.
The results of the laboratory analyses are shown in Table 2-4, while
the exact sampling locations are shown in Figure 3.
5.0 CONCLUSIONS
The results of the soil screening and analytical testing indicate
that hydrocarbon constituents were found to be present in the
groundwater at this site in concentrations above NC DEHNR action
levels.
The results in Table 1 indicated that the Gastech hydrocarbon sensor
detected a hydrocarbon presence in the samples taken from the UST and
product piping excavations.
The results in Table 2 indicated that the hydrocarbon levels detected
in the soil samples obtained from the area of the gasoline UST
excavation were below NC DEHNR action levels, while the hydrocarbon
levels detected in the soil samples obtained from the area of the
pump islands were slightly above NC DEHNR action levels.

The results in Table 3 indicated that the hydrocarbon levels detected
in the soil samples obtained from the floor of the Used oil UST
excavation were below NC DEHNR action levels.
The results in Table 4 indicated that the dissolved hydrocarbon
levels in the groundwater sample obtained from the gasoline UST
excavation were above NC DEHNR action levels for Benzene, Toluene,
Ethylbenzene, Xylene, and Naphthalene.
6.0 LIMITATIONS
This report was prepared for Bass Electric Co., Inc., and Mr. Wayne
Taylor, to assist in the assessment of this site. This report has
been prepared in accordance with standard and NC DEHNR criteria, and
no warranties, either expressed, or implied, are made.
Observations presented in this report are based upon information and
data obtained from the excavations made in the locations shown in
Figure 3. Variations which exist may not become evident until a
later date. If variations are noted, our company should be contacted
to re-examine the site and revise documentation as necessary.
