Yes, there is something in the wind so far as the East Carolina Regional landfill operation. Two Republic Industries Attorneys walked into the Bertie County Commissioners meeting on March 17, 1998, supposedly unannounced, and presented a document requesting permission to start negotiating with the county attorney for a new franchise ordinance and the expansion and layout of the East Carolina/Bertie Regional Landfill. As you probably know the Bertie Citizens Action Coalition and I have fought hard to preserve the County's environment and are continuing to do so. We are terribly disappointed in our County government because they seem to do everything they can to satisfy the corporation's every desire and expand that facility and wrap Bertie County up with any areas garbage. No person in Bertie County or Bertie County's Government knows what type of waste is being put in the County's soil. The only inspection at the landfill is a State inspector's occassional visit. We believe this landfill is a catastrophe about to happen. About a year and a half ago our commissioners approved a 3 year franchise ordinance for East Carolina to operated the landfill until the year 2000. We knew they would be back for another renewal soon, but not this soon. It is the Bertie Citizens Action Coalition's intent to fight this request in every way possible. We didn't want the landfill in in the first place. We don't want it now. The county isn't getting hardly any revenue from the facility along with the certain risk that in the future we will have major and costly problems maintaining all of the solid waste being dumped forever. hope the State of NC will tighten all regulations and requirements for these big Corporations to operate these facilities. They must be require to permanently monitor and be resonsible for their actions. The citizens such as I living near these type facilities are in a very bad position now and even more so in the future. These big companies are leaving the people with a major problen and taking all the money that will cost to fix it, if it ever can be fixed, to another state and county. I would greatly appreciate you notifing me when Republic Industries or any Bertie County official requests any permit action or change to the East Carolina Regional Landfill. Thank you again for your prompt reply. Sincerely, Reginald S.
