Subject: Site Check Report

Facility ID# 0-036640
Dear Mr. Powers:
AECOM Technical Services, Inc. of North Carolina (AECOM) on behalf of Speedway, LLC
(Speedway) is presenting this Site Check Report for the above referenced store. On June 23,
2023, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) inspector noted that there
were non-passing results for the premium unleaded (PUL) spill bucket during the December 15,
2020, triennial operability test. During the December 15, 2020, triennial testing, the secondary
containment of the spill bucket failed integrity testing and the primary was not tested prior to the
installation of the new PUL spill bucket installed on January 11, 2021. A UST-17A form was filed
with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) on June 26, 2023, included
as Attachment A. To determine if a release may have occurred to the environment, assessment
activities were conducted as documented in this report. A soil boring log has been included as
Attachment B, and the laboratory report for the samples collected during the site check has been
included as Attachment C.
There are no active or historical release incidents associated with the Site.
SITE ACTIVITIES
Soil and Groundwater Sampling
On August 9, 2023, AECOM met with Sweetwater Utility Exploration (Sweetwater) at the site to
collect soil sample (SS-1) near the 6,000-gallon premium spill bucket (Figure 1). Sweetwater air
knifed the soil boring to a depth of approximately 2.5 feet below ground surface (bgs), then
AECOM used a hand auger to collect the soil sample. The sample was collected at approximately
2.5 feet bgs and screened with a photoionization detector (PID). AECOM bottled the sample for
laboratory analysis for total petroleum hydrocarbons for gasoline range organics (TPH-GRO) and
diesel range organics (TPH-DRO).
AECOM
Site Check Report September 2023
Speedway 6975 Page 2
Raleigh, North Carolina
The samples were submitted to Pace Analytical Services in Huntersville, North Carolina for
analysis at the Huntersville, North Carolina laboratory.
RESULTS
Based on laboratory analysis, a detectable concentration of TPH-DRO was reported in soil sample
SS-1; however, the concentration did not exceed the soil contamination action level established by
NCDEQ. Laboratory analysis did not detect concentrations of TPH-GRO in soil sample SS-1. The
laboratory report is included in Attachment C.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on laboratory analysis of the soil sample collected near the 6,000-gallon premium spill
bucket, no NCDEQ action levels were exceeded. AECOM, on behalf of Speedway recommends
that this release be closed out with no further action.
If you have any questions, please call Nicole Long, AECOM Project Manager, at (704) 649-6586.

AECOM

DEFINITIONS
DF - Dilution Factor, if reported, represents the factor applied to the reported data due to dilution of the sample aliquot.
ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit.
TNTC - Too Numerous To Count
J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit.
MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit.
PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit.
RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and
bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix.
S - Surrogate
1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is
a combined concentration.
Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values.
LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate)
MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate)
DUP - Sample Duplicate
RPD - Relative Percent Difference
NC - Not Calculable.
SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up
U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected.
Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether.
A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA
Method 8260.
N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for
each analyte is a combined concentration.
Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as
"Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters.
Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes.
TNI - The NELAC Institute.
ANALYTE QUALIFIERS
