Dear Mr. Koehler:
Best Geological and Environmental Consulting, P.A. (Best) is pleased to provide this
Initial Abatement Report for the spill site located at the Enochville Fire and Rescue
Station 49 located at 808 North Enochville A venue in China Grove, North Carolina (see
Figure I). The purpose of the assessment was to confirm that soil containing diesel fuel exceeding the state action limit had been removed from the site.
1 Introduction
The spill occurred on June 6, 2023, when a dump truck operated by Cam Hauling & Grading, LLC. of Rockwell, North Carolina caught fire and pulled into the parking lot of
the fire station. The dump truck exploded releasing approximately 55 gallons of diesel
fuel onto the parking lot. The diesel fuel flowed approximately 80 feet east and northeast
across the parking lot and onto the grass adjoining the parking lot (see Figure 2).
Ultimate Environmental of Statesville, North Carolina (Ultimate) responded to the
incident. Absorbent materials were used at the time of the accident to recover as much of
the diesel fuel as possible and contain the spill. The parking lot was later cleaned by Ultimate to remove the residual diesel and the saturated absorbent materials. Two water wells are located on the subject property. One of the wells is used for fire suppression
and is located 105 feet southeast of the spill site while the other is used as a source of
potable water for the fire station and is located 112 feet southeast of the spill site.
