Various commercial properties surround the Site. 3.4.1 Zoning/Receptor Information The Site and adjoining properties are currently zoned Residential Agricultural (RA), General Business (GB), Highway Business (HB) (Iredell County GIS Viewer). Receptor information for the site was documented in Mid Atlantic’s July 29, 2002 Phase II Limited Site Assessment Report. No water supply wells were identified within a 250-foot radius of the site, three water supply wells were identified within 250 and1,500-foot radius of the site (none are currently used for drinking water). Public water is available to the subject site and to portions of the surrounding properties. The closest surface water body is an unnamed tributary located about 700 feet south of the subject site, which drains to Kerr Branch and Weathers Creek. A receptor survey update was not completed for this phase of work. For additional details, please refer to the LSA report. 3.4.2 Site Geology and Hydrogeology Site geology was evaluated based on historic Mid-Atlantic’s and current investigations. The site is located within Fine-grained biotite gneiss,Massive to strongly foliated, minor layers of amphibolite and muscovite schist of the Charlotte and Milton Belt. The site appears to be located in a predominantly metamorphic rock formation AECOM 3-2 Speedway 7976 Troutman, NCGroundwater Monitoring Report November 2022 described as “Fine-grained biotite gneiss”. In general, the soils encountered at the Site consist of reddish, reddish brown, tan and gray, clays, micaceous sand, clayey silts, and silty and generally getting coarser grained with depth. Based on the results of the September 2022 gauging event, groundwater flow is to the south, which is generally consistent with historical groundwater flow. Historical groundwater elevations are summarized on Table 4, and a groundwater flow map (Figure 3) was constructed based on the September 2022 gauging results. The hydraulic gradient, as measured from monitoring well MW-8 to MW-16, is 0.028 ft/ft [(80.98-71.66)/328.53]. Hydraulic Gradient =Δ𝑦 Δ𝑥 Δy = Change in groundwater elevation from MW-8 to MW-16 Δx = Distance between MW-8 and MW-16 AECOM 4-1 Speedway 7976 Troutman, NCGroundwater Monitoring Report November 2022 4 Receptor Information 4.1 Water Supply Wells The previous consultant Mid Atlantic conducted a water supply well survey in 2002 to identify the presence of water supply wells within a 1,500-foot radius from the Site and is documented in Mid Atlantic’s July 29, 2002, Phase II LSA Report. 4.1.1 Private Water Supply Wells It was confirmed that no water supply wells are present within 250 feet of the source areas of the releases. Three water supply wells were identified within 250 and1,500-foot radius of the site (none are currently used for drinking water). For additional details, please refer to the LSA report. 4.1.2 Public Water Systems Municipal water is available to the site and the surrounding properties. Water lines run along the public streets in the area. The Site obtains water from the Town of Troutman. 4.2 Surface Water No surface water was observed on the Site. The closest surface water body is an unnamed tributary located about 700 feet south of the subject site, which drains to Kerr Branch and Weathers Creek. Wellhead Protection Areas According to the NCDEQ Well Head Protection website, last updated in 2022, there are no approved wellhead protection plans located in southern Iredell County. AECOM 5-2 Speedway 7976 Troutman, NCGroundwater Monitoring Report November 2022 5 Groundwater Investigation During the current monitoring period, activities included groundwater gauging and sampling. 5.1 Groundwater Gauging Monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2R, MW-3 through MW-10, MW-10D, and MW-11 through MW-26 were gauged for depth to water and depth to LNAPL (if present). Depths to groundwater ranged from 20.91 ft bgs (MW-17) to 26.20 ft bgs (MW-16) in wells where LNAPL was not encountered. In wells where LNAPL was encountered the corrected depth to groundwater ranged from 21.78 ft bgs (MW-3) to 22.51 ft bgs (MW-20). 5.2 Groundwater Sampling Prior to the collection of a groundwater sample for laboratory analysis, the depth to liquid or LNAPL was measured using an electronic oil-water interface probe. If no LNAPL was present, the well was purged of at least three well volumes using a disposable bailer. Depth to water and calculated groundwater elevations for the current and historic gauging events are included on Table 4. 5.3 Groundwater Analytical Results During this reporting period, select monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-6, MW-11, MW-13 and MW-25) were sampled on September 20, 2022, and analyzed for analysis volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via EPA Method SM 6200B to evaluate the effectiveness of the January 2022 surfactant injection and MMPE event. Once the wells had been properly purged, natural attenuation parameter readings were collected using a YSI meter and groundwater samples were collected from each location using dedicated disposable polyethylene bailers attached to nylon rope. To collect a sample, the bailer was slowly lowered to a depth just beneath the water surface in the well. The bailer was then recovered, and the contents carefully decanted into laboratory supplied sample containers, properly preserved, and delivered to Pace Analytical (Pace), a North Carolina-certified laboratory. Groundwater sampling results indicated petroleum hydrocarbon continued to impact the Site monitoring wells during this reporting period. - Benzene concentrations were not observed above the Gross Contamination Levels (GCL) in sampled site monitoring wells. No other compounds exceeded GCLs. Analytical results are summarized in Table 5. A dissolved benzene Iso-concentration map showing the results from the September 2022 sampling event is included as Figure 4. Laboratory analytical reports are included in Appendix A. AECOM 6-3 Speedway 7976 Troutman, NCGroundwater Monitoring Report November 2022 6 LNAPL Investigation LNAPL has historically been observed in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, MW-5, MW-6, MW-7 and MW- 20. During the September gauging event only monitoring wells MW-3 and MW-20 had measurable LNAPL at 0.04 ft and 0.14 ft, respectivly. This section discusses LNAPL gauging. 6.1 LNAPL Gauging Historical gauging information is summarized in Table 4. During the current monitoring period, apparent LNAPL thickness was gauged on September 20, 2022. A LNAPL Delineation Map detailing the on site apparent LNAPL plume is included as Figure 5. Graphs detailing LNAPL thickness over time are included as Appendix B. Based on these graphs, LNAPL thicknesses for MW-3 and MW-20 are significantly lower when compared to their historical highs. Monitoring well MW-3 had a high of 4.48 ft on June 18, 2003, and monitoring well MW-20 had a high of 2.37 ft on November 1, 2007. The apparent LNAPL thickness within monitoring wells MW-3 and MW-20 increased when compared to the March 8, 2022 gauging event. AECOM 8-1 Speedway 7976 Troutman, NCGroundwater Monitoring Report November 2022 7 Discussion Analysis of the groundwater samples collected on September 20, 2022, indicated benzene and other contaminates of concern continue to impact the Site in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-6, MW-11, MW-13 and MW-25. Based on the results of the groundwater monitoring report:  LNAPL was measured in monitoring wells MW-3 and MW-20 at apparent thicknesses of 0.04 ft and 0.14 ft, respectively.  Groundwater sampled from select site monitoring wells did not exhibit petroleum compounds at concentrations exceeding benzene GCL.  Water level measurements collected from the site indicated that groundwater flow direction corresponded with historical flow direction which has been generally towards the south. AECOM, on behalf of Speedway, recommends the following additional actions:  LNAPL recovery should continue to be conducted by using absorbent socks in wells that have measurable LNAPL thickness at the site until LNAPL is no longer present and contaminant concentrations are below the GCLs. Semi-annual groundwater monitoring should continue at the site, and a feasibility study for LNAPL recovery should be conducted for this site. 8 References NCDEQ, 2021. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP - Sample Duplicate RPD - Relative Percent Difference NC - Not Calculable. SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected. Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA Method 8260. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for each analyte is a combined concentration. Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as "Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes. TNI - The NELAC Institute.
