Re: Removal of Solid Waste from the Former De-Chlorination Pond
Former Danalex Facility
515 E. Alabama Avenue, Bessemer City, North Carolina
Project No. 897-03
Dear Mr. Griffing:
On November 12, 2022, at the request of Mr. John Griffing, the Executor of the Jerry Kellar Estate
Harmon Environmental, PA initiated a Phase I Environmental Assessment of the former Danalex
facility at 515 E. Alabama Avenue in Bessemer City North Carolina. Figure 1 depicts the location
of the site on an excerpt of a United States Geologic Survey (USGS) topographic map of the region.
The Benmar Properties, LLC owned facility in Bessemer City was a former textile facility operated
by Danalex, Inc. This operation included a lined concrete de-chlorination pond near the northern
corner of the property (Figure 2). This impoundment had become partially filled with solid waste
(See Photograph 1 in Attachment A). At the time of the site visit, Harmon Environmental, PA
indicated the presence of accumulated solid waste in the former de-chlorination impoundment
would be considered a recognized environmental condition (REC) in a Phase I Environmental
Assessment of the site.
At the request of Benmar Properties, LLC, Harmon Environmental, PA requested proposals from
three qualified contractors to remove the solid waste material from the former de-chlorination
impoundment. Benmar Properties, LLC subsequently retained DeBruhl Environmental
Excavating, Inc. to perform these activities.
Prior to removing the waste, Harmon Environmental, PA contacted Mr. Jason Taylor, the Water
Treatment Supervisor/Pre-Treatment Coordinator for Bessemer City to request approval to
discharge accumulated water in the impoundment. On January 21, 2022, Mr. Taylor met with Mr.
John Doster of Doster Realty and collected two samples were collected from the impoundment.
The first sample (515 E Alabama, BC – Top) was collected from the top 2-inches of water in the
pond prior to disturbing the fluid. The second sample (515 E Alabama. BC – Bottom) was collected
after stirring the sediment to represent the effect of pumping the fluid. The samples were analyzed
by the Two Rivers Utilities Crowder Creek Laboratory. A copy of the analytical report associated
with these two samples are presented in Attachment B. Based on the analytical results and
Bessemer City and Two Rivers Utilities approved the discharge of the accumulated water into the
Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW).
Mr. John Griffing
July 5, 2022
Page2
In addition to requesting approval for disposal of the accumulated water, on January 28, 2022
Harmon Environmental, P A contacted Ms. Marcie Smith with the Gaston County Landfill to
discuss disposal of the accumulated solid waste. Ms. Smith responded by requesting a Solid Waste
Screening Questionnaire be completed and submitted for review.
On April 7, 2022 Harmon Environmental, P A transmitted a completed Solid Waste Screening
Questionnaire for review and approval (Attachment C). Analytical data associated with a
composite sample of the waste material was included with the completed questionnaire.
On April 19, 2022, representatives of the Gaston County Landfill visited the site and approved the
planned disposal of the accumulated material at the Philadelphia Church Road Landfill.
On April 21, 2022 DeBruhl Environmental Excavating, Inc. begin pumping 7,576 gallons of
accumulated water from the impoundment to the sanitary sewer. The water volume was recorded
using a Rockwell Sensus 1.5-inch diameter totalizing flowmeter (SIN 38051537). The flowmeter
utilized in this process is depicted in Photograph 2.
Following removal of the accumulated water, on April 27, 2022 DeBruhl Environmental
Excavating, Inc. begin removing solid waste from the former de-chlorination impound. Between
April 27, 2022 and May 3, 2022 a total of 860.91 tons of material was excavated from the
impoundment, transported to the Gaston County Landfill for appropriate disposal. Copies of the
Weight Tickets are presented in Attachment D. Photographs 3, 4, 5 and 6 depict the impoundment
as the solid waste removal process progressed. Photograph 7 shows the impoundment following
removal of the solid waste and Photograph 8 shows rubber tires and uncapped compressed gas
cylinders discovered in the impoundment during the solid waste removal process. Haz-Mat, Inc.
is scheduled to address these materials in conjunction with another project underway at the site.
Removal of the accumulated solid waste from the former de-chlorination impoundment addresses
this potential REC observed at the former Danalex facility.
We appreciate this opportunity to provide you with these environmental consulting services.
Please call or email if you have any questions or require any additional information.
Sincerely,
Harmon Environmental, P A

QUALIFIERS
Project: BENMAR 897-03
Pace Project No.: 92587710
DEFINITIONS
DF -Dilution Factor, if reported, represents the factor applied to the reported data due to dilution of the sample aliquot.
ND -Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit.
TNTC -Too Numerous To Count
J -Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit.
MDL -Adjusted Method Detection Limit.
PQL -Prac~cal Quantitation Limit.
RL -Reporting Limit -The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and
bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix.
S -Surrogate
1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte Is
a combined concentration.
Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values.
LCS(D)-Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate)
MS(D)-Matrix Spike (Duplicate)
DUP -Sample Duplicate
RPD -Relative Percent Difference
NC -Not Calculable.
SG -Silica Gel -Clean-Up
U -Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected.
Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether.
A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA
Method 8260.
N-Nitrosodiphenylamlne decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for
each analyte is a combined concentration.
Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as
"Total• may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters.
Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes.
TNI -The NELAC Institute.

recovered below acceptance limits. There were no detections for this compound in the associated
samples. A LOQ standard was analyzed and the compound was detected, demonstrating there was
adequate sensitivity to identify the analyte if it were present.
