Alabama Avenue Bessemer City, Nortlz Carolina In November 2021, Harmon Environmental, PA initiated a Phase I Environmental Assessment of the industrial/commercial facility at 515 E. Alabama Avenue in Bessemer City, North Carolina. Information collected during this assessment indicated that tetrachloroethene had historically been detected in soil samples collected from beneath the floor slab in this facility. Based on the historical findings, Harmon Environmental, P A recommended sub-slab vapor samples be collected to evaluate the potential for vapor intrusion. On January 5, 2022 Harmon Environmental, PA personnel advanced ten sub-slab vapor sampling points at the former Danalex facility. Figure 1 depicts the location of the site on an excerpt of a United Stated Geologic Survey (USGS) topographic map of the region. Figure 2 depicts the approximate locations of the sampling points on a map depicting the layout of the building and property. Soil Vapor Sampling Point Locations and Installation Procedures On January 5, 2022 ten sampling points were advanced through the concrete floor slab and sampled at the former Danalex facility at the approximate locations depicted on Figure 2. Each boring was advanced into the concrete floor to a depth of approximately 1 inch using a l-inch diameter drill bit. The borings were then extended through the remainder ofthe concrete slab using a 0.25-inch diameter drill bit into the gravel material beneath the slab. A 0.25-inch diameter polyethylene tube was inserted through the slab and a hydrated bentonite clay seal was compacted into the l-inch diameter outer hole to seal the point. Sample point construction details are presented in Table 1. Sub-Slab Vapor Point Leak Testing Procedures On January 5, 2022 Harmon Environmental, PA personnel leak tested each of the three sampling points with helium in general accordance with Vapor Intrusion Pathway: A Practical Guideline, published by the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council in January 2007. These tests consisted of constructing a tent of polyethylene sheeting over each sample point and inflating the tent with helium gas. A Dielectric MGD 2002 Helium Hydrogen Detector (SIN 42201) was utilized to verify the helium concentration within the tent. After in;flating and measuring the helium concentration within each tent, the helium gas detector was connected to each sampling point to measure the helium concentration Attorney-Client Privileged Work Product Sub-Slab Vapor Sampling Report Former Dana/ex Facility January 25, 2022 1 Harmon Environmental, P A 615 Bruce Thomas Road Monroe, North Carolina harmonenv@yahoo.com beneath the slab. The helium testing results are summarized on Table 1. As indicated in Table 1, the ten sub-slab vapor sampling points passed the leak test protocol. Sub-Slab Vapor Point Sample Procedures Following the completion of satisfactory leak testing, Harmon Environmental, PA personnel sampled each of the ten sub-slab vapor sampling points. Sample point P-1 was purged of approximately 300 milliliters (ml) of air using a 60 ml syringe. The extraction rate was maintained at less than 200 milliliters per minute (ml/min). Analytical Results and Conclusions Table 3 presents the soil vapor concentrations detected in samples collected from beneath the slab at the former Danalex facility compared with the Sub-Slab and Exterior Soil Gas Screening Levels (SGSL) as defined by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in June 2021. As indicated in this table, tetrachloroethene concentrations collected from sub-slab vapor sample points P-2, P-3, P-6, P-7 and P-8 exceeded the Non Residential SGSLs. Further, the concentration of 1,1,2-trichloroethane detected in the sub slab vapor sample collected from point P-2 and concentration oftrichloroethene in the sub slab vapor samples collected from points P-2, P-3 and P-8 exceeded the respective Non Residential SGSLs. When the NCDEQ June 2021 Risk Based Calculator was applied to the sub-slab vapor analytical results associated with sample point P-2, the results indicate the detected concentrations exceed acceptable risk levels for Non-Residential Workers within the facility. NO -Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC -Too Numerous To Count J -Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL-Adjusted Method Detection Limit. POL -Practical Quantitation Limit. RL-Reporting Limit-The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S -Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. LCS(D)-Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D)-Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP -Sample Duplicate RPD -Relative Percent Difference NC -Not Calculable. SG -Silica Gel -Clean-Up U-Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected . Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA Method 8260. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for each analyte is a combined concentration. Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as "Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes. TNI -The NELAC Institute.
