The purpose of this closure assessment was to evaluate site conditions after removal of four UST's: one 1,000 gallon gasoline, two 550 gallon gasoline and one 550 gallon kerosene. Soil samples were taken beneath the tanks, the pumps and the product lines to assess for possible petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. The samples were sent to a North Carolina certified laboratory for analysis using EPA methods 5030 (gasoline tanks, pump and product line samples) and 5030/3550 (kerosene tank and pump samples). The laboratory results indicate that the soil beneath gasoline pumps #2 and #3 is above the state regulatory limit of 10 parts per million--ppm--for EPA method 5030. North Carolina Department of Environment, Health, and Natural Resources regulations require remediation of soils to less than 10 parts per million (ppm) by method 5030, or up to a maximum of 300 ppm under certain site conditions determined by a Site Sensitivity Evaluation (SSE). If soils cannot be remediated by excavation to the specified levels, a Comprehensive Site Assessment must be prepared to determine the vertical and horizontal extent of contamination. 2.0 SOIL SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS 550 Gallon Kerosene UST The 550 gallon kerosene UST (UST #1) was located on the north side of the store and was buried 3' below the ground surface. The tank measured 7.45' x 3.4'. Soil samples S-1 and S-2 were taken from a total depth (from ground surface) of 8' beneath the ends of UST #1. Sample S-1 was taken from the east end of the UST, while S-2 was taken from the west end of the UST. There were no signs of contamination in the bottom of the excavation pit or on the tank (Figure 2). 550 Gallon Gasoline USTs The first 550 gallon gasoline UST removed (UST #2) was located on the south side of the store in the west end of the excavation pit (Figure 2). UST #2 was buried 2' deep and measured 5.3' x 4'. UST #3 (the second 550 gallon gasoline UST removed) was lying in- l·- 1 I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I 2 line with UST #2 (Figure 2). UST #3 was buried 2' deep and measured 5.3' x 4'. Soil samples S-3 and S-4 were taken from a total depth (from ground surface) of 8' beneath the center of UST #2 and #3 respectively. Both the USTs and the pit showed no signs of leakage. Gasoline UST The 1,000 gallon gasoline UST (UST #4) was located on the south side of the building and was buried 2' below the ground surface. The tank measured 10.3' x 4.0'. There were no signs ofleakage in the bottom of the excavation pit or on the tank. Soil samples S-5 and S-6 were taken from a total depth (from ground surface) of 8' beneath the UST. Sample S-5 was taken from beneath the east end of the UST, while sample S-6 was taken from beneath the west end of the UST (Figure 2). Soil samples L-1 and L-2 were taken from the bucket of the back hoe from a total depth (from ground surface) of 3' beneath the product lines (Figure 2). Sample L-1 was taken beneath the product lines from UST #2 and #4. Sample L-2 was taken beneath the product line from UST #3. Soil samples P-1, P-2, P-3 and P-4 were taken from a total depth (from ground surface) of 3' beneath the kerosene and gasoline pumps. Sample P-1 was taken beneath the kerosene pump in the northeast comer of the store. The sample was taken from an angle-boring made with a stainless steel hand auger. The auger was angled, from outside the store, underneath the location of the pump inside the store (Figure 2). Samples P-2, P-3 and P-4 were taken beneath gasoline pumps #2, #3 and #4, respectively. These pump samples were also obtained with a stainless steel hand auger. The following decontamination procedures were followed while obtaining each of the samples: Decontamination Procedures 1.The hand auger was thoroughly washed in Alconox (an industrial strength cleanser)and rinsed with distilled water.2.New, sterile latex gloves were worn while obtaining each sample (a new pair for eachsample).3.The samples were placed into clean, amber-glass 4 ounce jars with air-tight lids. The samples were screened with an organic vapor meter (OVM) and placed in a cooler maintained at approximately 4°C. The samples were sent to a North Carolina certified laboratory for analysis using EPA method 5030/3550 for the kerosene UST and pump samples and EPA method 5030 for the gasoline UST and pump samples. The results for samples taken beneath the tanks are shown in Table 1 and Figure 2. The soil removed during the excavation of the USTs was suspected to contain petroleumhydrocarbons above the state regulatory limit ( 10 parts per million--ppm by EPA method 5030) and was disposed of at Berico Oil Company's land farm. A copy of the Disposal Manifest will be submitted when it becomes available. A copy of the Certificates of TankDisposal will also be submitted when they become available. A copy of the GW/UST-2Tank Closure Form is included in Appendix B. °3.0 CONCLUSIONS/ RECO:MJ\IBNDATIONS On August 1, 1994, Pyramid Environmental conducted an underground storage tank (UST) closure assessment at the Harold Smith Grocery in Burlington, North Carolina. 3 Soil sample P-2 (73 .1 ppm) and P-3 ppm) are above the state regulatory level of 10ppm by EPA method 5030. North Carolina Department of Environment, Health, and Natural Resources regulations require remediation of soils to less than 10 ppm by method5030, or up to a maximum of300 ppm under certain site conditions determined by a Site Sensitivity Evaluation (SSE). If soils cann·ot be remediated by excavation to the specifiedlevels, a Comprehensive Site Assessment must be prepared to determine the vertical and horizontal extent of contamination. ■ • ii • II I I - 4.0 CLOSURE The observatio ns, conclu sions and recommendations docum ented in this report ar e basedon site conditions and infonna ti on av aila ble at the tim e of Pyramid's investigation .
