Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: July 28, 2023 Cruz N Mart Project Manager: Scott Driscoll GRI Project No. 3787 ii EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Cruz N Mart is located at 6500 Andrew Jackson Highway in Laurel Hill, Scotland County, North Carolina. The site is currently owned and operated by Teddy D. Norton as a petroleum retail facility. A release was discovered at the site in September 2016 during the closure of two 4,000-gallon gasoline USTs and one 550-gallon kerosene UST. Currently, one 6,000-gallon gasoline UST and one 20,000-gallon two compartment gasoline UST (14,000 and 6,000-gallon) are active at the site. The adjoining properties are a mixture of commercial and residential properties. According to the information determined during receptor survey activities, twelve potable water supply wells were identified within a 1,000-foot radius of the source area. Of the twelve water supply wells, there are three potable wells located within 250 feet of the source area. Public water is available to the site and surrounding properties within a 1,500-foot radius of the site. A CSA was completed between February and April 2018 and an additional phase of the CSA was completed in October 2019. The CSA concluded that the groundwater contaminant plume remains undefined to the south and southeast and the site is classified as High Risk due to eleven potable water supply wells located within 1,000 feet of the source area. A CAP has not been developed for this incident. In February 2020, an attempt to lower the risk ranking of the site was made by obtaining permission to connect potable water supply wells users located within a 1,000-foot radius of site to municipal water. Water connection agreements were obtained from the owner of WSW-1, WSW-2 and WSW-9; however, the owner of WSW-3 did not grant permission for switching over to municipal water. A well agreement to connect WSW-OX is incomplete pending additional discussion with the property owner. On June 27, 2023, six monitoring wells were gauged, purged and sampled. No free product was observed at the site. Concentrations of benzene, toluene, xylenes, MTBE, naphthalene, tert- amyl alcohol (TAA), tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), n-propylbenzene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene and/or 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene that exceeded the MACs were reported in the ground water samples collected from MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, and MW-5. All of the reported contaminant concentrations were less than the GCLs. Contaminant mass at the site has decreased by 26% between October 2019 and June 2023. Based on the information, the previously submitted TA for connecting WSW-1, WSW-2 and WSW-9 to the municipal connection and/or abandonment should proceed. Contaminant Fate & Transport modelling should be completed in relation to WSW-3 to determine if the well is at risk as the well is located outside of 250 feet and cross-gradient from the source area. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: July 28, 2023 Cruz N Mart Project Manager: Scott Driscoll GRI Project No. 3787 2 received a well survey from the property owner in response to the December 2016 receptor survey. Of the twelve water supply wells, there are three potable wells located within 250 feet of the source area. Municipal water is available to the site and surrounding properties. No surface water bodies were identified within a 500-foot radius of the site. Water supply well information is included in Table 3. Adjacent property owner information is included in Table 4. A Site Vicinity Map showing the locations of water supply wells and adjacent properties is included as Figure 3. A CSA was completed between February and April 2018 and an additional phase of the CSA was completed in October 2019. The CSA concluded that the groundwater contaminant plume remains undefined to the south and southeast and the site is classified as High Risk. A CAP has not been developed and no projected milestones have been established. In February 2020, an attempt to lower the risk ranking of the site was made by obtaining permission to connect users of potable water supply wells located within a 1,000-foot radius of site to municipal water. Water connection agreements were obtained from the owner of WSW-1, WSW-2 and WSW-9; however, the owner of WSW-3 did not grant permission for switching over to municipal water. A well agreement to connect WSW-OX is incomplete pending additional discussion with the property owner. 2.0 PRESENTATION OF CURRENT SITE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION/ COMPARISON TO HISTORICAL ASSESSMENT INFORMATION On June 27, 2023, six Type II monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-6) were gauged, purged and sampled. Depths to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells ranged from 2.16 feet to 40.74 feet below the tops of well casings. Ground water elevations in the Type II monitoring wells ranged from 58.62 feet to 97.71 feet. Please note, MW-1, MW-2 and MW-4 were drilled to total depths of 25 feet, each and appear to be set in a perched water bearing zone that differs from the water table depths in other portions of the assessed area. The septic drain field is located adjacent to the area of these wells and just south of the UST basin. The possibility exists that drain field may be contributing and/or influencing the shallow water bearing zone around these wells. Ground water flow for the deeper Type II monitoring wells (MW-3, MW-5 and MW-6) was generally toward the east with an average horizontal hydraulic gradient of approximately 0.01 feet per foot. Well construction and gauging information is included in Table 5. A Water Table Surface Map based on June 2023, data is included as Figure 4. A summary of the current ground water gauging data is shown below: Well ID Screened Interval (x to y ft. BGS) Bottom of Well (ft. BGS) Top of Casing Elevation (ft.)
