(AECOM), on behalf of Speedway, LLC (Speedway), has prepared this Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL) Evaluation Report for Speedway Store No. 7980 (Site), located at 810 East Cumberland Street, Dunn, Harnett County, North Carolina. The Site is currently owned by Wilco Hess and operates as an active Speedway gas station and convenience store. During Phase II Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) activities conducted in September 2013, a release to soil and groundwater was identified at the Site. Incident Number (No.) 29878 was opened for the Site. On October 2, 2022, AECOM personnel collected five soil samples during line and dispenser closure activities during a North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) right-of-way expansion project. Three samples were collected in the vicinity of product line piping (PL-1, PL-2, and PL-3) and one at each of the two dispensers (DI-1 and DI-2). Based on laboratory analysis, total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) diesel-range organics (DRO) were detected at concentrations exceeding laboratory reporting limits in soil samples PL-1, PL-2, and PL-3 but below the Soil to Groundwater Maximum Soil Contaminant Concentration (MSCC) or the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) action level. TPH gasoline-range organics (GRO) were detected at concentrations above the NCDEQ action level. On September 29, 2022, AECOM performed a groundwater monitoring event at the Site. During gauging, monitoring well MW-3 was found to have been destroyed, and LNAPL was encountered in monitoring well MW-10R. Monitoring wells MW-1R, MW-4, MW-5R, and MW-11 were sampled for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Petroleum compounds were detected in the groundwater samples but did not exceed gross contamination levels (GCLs). On April 7, 2023, AECOM gauged monitoring well MW-10R to confirm the presence of LNAPL and removed LNAPL with a hand bailer. After removal, a sorbant sock was installed in the well. LNAPL was not reported in any other wells. During the current reporting period, AECOM gauged all on-site monitoring wells and performed LNAPL bail-down testing on monitoring well MW-10R. During gauging activities, LNAPL was only observed at monitoring well MW-10R. The well exhibited an apparent LNAPL thickness of 0.42 feet. Prior to testing, LNAPL was removed from monitoring well MW-10R. LNAPL was not observed at the beginning of the test. However, LNAPL started to recharge after the first 11 minutes of the test. LNAPL reached an apparent thickness of 0.36 feet after 5 hours, indicating that a reservoir of product remains in the vicinity of the well. Based on this information, AECOM, on behalf of Speedway, recommends that LNAPL removal should continue at the Site in the form of an aggressive fluid vapor recovery (AFVR) event on monitoring well MW-10-R. The risk classification should remain as an intermediate risk site until the LNAPL is removed and the contaminant concentrations measured in monitoring well MW-10R are reduced to below the GCLs. Monitoring well MW-3 should be replaced where it was found to have been destroyed. Semi-annual groundwater sampling should continue to monitor plume migration. AECOM 1-1 Speedway Store No. 7980-Dunn, NC LNAPL Evaluation Report October 2023 1 Introduction As required by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, AECOM, on behalf of Speedway, has prepared this Groundwater Monitoring Report for Speedway Store No. 7980 (Site), located at 810 East Cumberland Street, Dunn, Harnett County, North Carolina (Figure 1 and 2). The Site is currently owned by Wilco Hess and is operated by Speedway, LLC as a petroleum retail facility and convenience store. This report documents activities conducted on August 1, 2023, which included gauging of all on-site monitoring wells and LNAPL bail-down testing on monitoring well MW-10R. The field activities are discussed below. 3.1 Gauging Activities On August 1, 2023, on-site monitoring wells were gauged using an oil/water interface probe. Recent and historical groundwater elevation measurements are summarized in Table 1. 3.2 LNAPL Recovery Test A bail-down test was conducted in monitoring well MW-10R on August 1, 2023. The test aimed to determine the recovery rate of LNAPL in the well once it was removed. Prior to testing, depths to water and LNAPL were measured using an oil/water interface probe, and LNAPL was removed from monitoring well MW-10R using a peristaltic pump. The liquid from the test was transferred into a 55- gallon drum stored on-site. The measurements were collected at specified intervals. The estimated recovery rate is 0.0012 feet per second in monitoring well MW-10R. During recharge, depth to water and LNAPL measurements were collected at specific intervals. LNAPL recovery rate data is summarized in Table 2. AECOM 4-1 Speedway Store No. 7980-Dunn, NC LNAPL Evaluation Report October 2023 4 Field Activity Results The following sections provide information on the gauging and testing activities conducted at the Site. 4.1 Site Geology/Hydrogeology Site geology was evaluated based on historical and current investigations. The Site is located within the Cretaceous- aged Middendorf Formation of the Coastal Plain of North Carolina. The Site is generally underlain by sand, sandstone and mudstone, pale gray to gray in color with orange casts, clay balls and iron-cemented concretions. During past Geological Resources, Inc. (GRI) investigations, the soil at the Site has been a mix of gray and red clay and gray and tan medium-size sand. Groundwater elevations range from 94.10 feet bgs in MW-8 to 92.73 feet bgs in MW-10R. LNAPL was observed in monitoring well MW-10R at an apparent thickness of 0.42 feet. Recent and historical groundwater elevations are summarized in Table 1, and an LNAPL delineation map is included as Figure 3. The hydraulic gradient, as measured from monitoring well MW-10R to MW-8, is 0.006 feet-per-foot (ft/ft) [(94.10- 92.73)/230.85]. Hydraulic Gradient = Δ𝑦 Δ𝑥 Δy = Change in groundwater elevation from MW-10R to MW-8 Δx = Distance between MW-10R and MW-8 4.2 LNAPL Recovery Test Results A bail-down test was on conducted in monitoring well MW-10R on August 1, 2023. The well was gauged prior to testing; the well exhibited an initial LNAPL thickness of 0.42 feet. During LNAPL removal, a bailer was lowered into the well, and the product was visually assessed for general appearance. The LNAPL appeared dark brown. Approximately 1.25 gallons of LNAPL and 0.25 gallons of water were removed from monitoring well MW-10R at a constant rate prior to the start of the test. The LNAPL and water mixture was stored in an on-site labeled drum. After LNAPL removal, the groundwater elevation was calculated at 92.33 feet bgs. The bail-down test lasted approximately 5 hours (311 minutes). LNAPL was not observed during the first 11 minutes of the test. LNAPL thickness steadily increased from 0.01 feet to 0.17 feet in the next 30 minutes of the test. At the end of the first hour and during the second hour, LNAPL thickness fluctuated between 0.10 feet and 0.15 feet. LNAPL thickness increased from 0.21 feet to 0.36 feet during the last 3 hours of the test. The estimated recovery rate is 0.0012 feet per minute [0.36/311] in monitoring well MW-10R. Estimated recovery rate = LNAPL thickness (ft) Elapsed time (min) LNAPL recovery rate data is summarized in Table 2. A graph of the LNAPL recovery test is presented as Figure 4. AECOM 5-1 Speedway Store No. 7980-Dunn, NC LNAPL Evaluation Report October 2023 5 Discussion Based on the results of the field activities conducted at the Site on August 1, 2023: − LNAPL was observed in monitoring well MW-10R at an apparent thickness of 0.42 feet. − Approximately 1.25 gallons of LNAPL and 0.25 gallons of water were removed from monitoring well MW-10R prior to the start of the test. − The estimated recovery rate is 0.0012 feet per minute in monitoring well MW-10R. − The results of the LNAPL recovery rate test conducted in monitoring well MW-10R indicate that a reservoir of product remains in the vicinity of monitoring well MW-10R. Based on this information, AECOM, on behalf of Speedway, recommends that LNAPL removal should continue at the Site in the form of an aggressive fluid vapor recovery (AFVR) event on monitoring well MW-10R.
