Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: June 28, 2023 Gray’s Creek Superette Project Manager: William Regenthal P. G. GRI Project No. 5408 ii EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Gray’s Creek Superette is located at 6353 S NC 87 Highway in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina. The site is currently owned by Alhobishi Convenience Stores and was operated by D.K Taylor Oil Company, Inc. as a petroleum retail facility. The site is currently vacant. A release was discovered following the removal of two 6,000-gallon gasoline, two 2,000-gallon gasoline and one 550-gallon kerosene USTs. There is currently one temporarily closed 10,000-gallon compartmentalized UST located in a separate UST basin to the south of the site building. This UST is recognized under a separate facility ID number 00-0-0000036605 and is not currently associated with UST Incident Number 13439. The adjoining properties are a mixture of single family residential, commercial and agricultural properties. A CAP has not been developed for the incident. Receptor information was updated for the site on October 30, 2020. Thirty-six water supply wells were identified within 1,500 feet of the site. The former on-site water supply well appears to have been destroyed. The well house associated with the former on-site water supply well remains, and has been overgrown with brush. No water supply wells were identified within a 250-foot radius of the site. A tributary to Long’s Branch was identified within a 500-foot radius of the site. Public water is not available to the site or surrounding properties within a 1,500-foot radius of the site. On June 5, 2023, nine monitoring wells and two water supply wells were gauged, purged and/or sampled. Please note, MW-1R, MW-4, MW-7, MW-8, MW-11 and MW-12 lacked sufficient well volume to be sampled after gauging. No concentrations of requested method constituents that exceeded the MACs were reported in the ground water samples collected during the June 2023 sampling event. None of the reported contaminant concentrations exceeded the GCLs. A GSI Mann-Kendall Toolkit for Plume Stability Analysis was completed for individual BTEX constituents and naphthalene for MW-1/MW-1R and naphthalene for MW-2/MW-2R. The plume stability analysis indicates that concentrations of benzene and toluene were decreasing for MW-1/MW-1R. The remaining constituents in MW-1/MW-1R and naphthalene in MW-2/2R show no trend currently. Based on this information, site conditions should be monitored and sampling re-attempted when sufficient recharge has occurred. It appears that contamination associated with the site may be confined to a surficial perched water zone and may not be indicative of actual ground water quality in the vicinity of the site. The horizontal contaminant plume is reasonably defined for this incident. The site risk classification should be re-evaluated for this incident since sufficient sample volume has not been able to be observed. If the site risk classification can be lowered, a NRP for ground water should be filed on the deed of the subject property. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: June 28, 2023 Gray’s Creek Superette Project Manager: William Regenthal P. G. GRI Project No. 5408 1 1.0 SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION GRI presents the results of the June 2023 ground water sampling event at the Gray’s Creek Superette site; located at 6353 S NC 87 Highway in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina (Figure 1). These activities were conducted in accordance with GRI Proposal No. 23-326, which was submitted to NCDEQ on May 26, 2023, and was approved as Task Authorization No. 13439-06 on May 26, 2023. State correspondence has been included as Appendix A. The site is currently owned by Alhobishi Convenience Stores and Rentals, Inc. and was operated by D. K. Taylor Oil Company as a petroleum retail facility. The site is currently vacant. A release was discovered in June 1994 following the removal of two 6,000-gallon gasoline, two 2,000-gallon gasoline and one 550- gallon kerosene USTs. Please note, a new UST system consisting of one 10,000-gallon compartmentalized UST and assosiated piping was installed in 2004 under facility ID number 00-0-0000036605. This system is currently under temporary closure. This UST system is not currently associated with UST Incident Number 13439. UST owner/operator information and UST system information for Facility ID 00-0- 0000011672 are included as Tables 1 and 2, respectively. The Registered Tank Reports for both facility IDs are shown below: ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: June 28, 2023 Gray’s Creek Superette Project Manager: William Regenthal P. G. GRI Project No. 5408 2 The site and surrounding area are a mixture of single family residential, commercial and agricultural properties. The site contains one building and is primarily capped with concrete and asphalt. The overall topography at the site is relatively flat. A tributary to Long’s Branch is located within a 500-foot radius of the site. Twelve Type II monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-6) were installed at the site during previous ground water assessment activities. Please note, MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, MW-5 and MW-6 have not been located and are assumed to have been destroyed. Monitoring wells MW-1R and MW-2R were installed as replacements for MW-1 and MW-2. Cross section maps from the previous consultant’s CSA Report are included as Appendix B. On October 30, 2020, GRI personnel conducted an updated receptor survey at the site. Thirty-six potable water supply wells (WSW-1 through WSW-36) were identified within a 1,500-foot radius of the site. Of the identified water supply wells, ten (WSW-1 through WSW-5, WSW-11, WSW-12, WSW-13 and WSW- 33) were located within a 1,000-foot radius of the site. No water supply wells were identified within a 250-foot radius of the site. The former on-site water supply well appears to have been destroyed. Only the well house remains, and is overgrown with brush. Municipal water is not available to the site or surrounding properties. The site does not lie within a designated wellhead protection area. Water supply well information is presented in Table 3. Adjacent property owner information is presented in Table 4. A Site Vicinity Map showing the adjacent properties has been included as Figure 2. A Site Map showing the locations of the monitoring wells and the structures on-site has been included as Figure 3. A CSA was completed by a past consultant on June 25, 1995. A CAP has not been completed for this incident. 2.0 PRESENTATION OF CURRENT SITE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION/ COMPARISON TO HISTORICAL ASSESSMENT INFORMATION On June 5, 2023, nine Type II monitoring wells (MW-1R, MW-2R, MW-4 and/or MW-7 through MW-12) and two water supply wells (WSW-1 and WSW-2) were gauged, purged and/or sampled in accordance ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: June 28, 2023 Gray’s Creek Superette Project Manager: William Regenthal P. G. GRI Project No. 5408 3 with NCDEQ guidelines. Please note, MW-1R, MW-4, MW-7, MW-8, MW-11 and MW-12 contained insufficient water volume and were not sampled. Depths to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells ranged from 5.41 feet to 14.22 feet below the tops of well casings. Ground water elevations in the Type II monitoring wells ranged from 85.50 feet to 94.83 feet. Ground water flow was generally to the northeast with a horizontal gradient of approximately 0.20 feet per foot. Well construction and gauging information is presented in Table 5. A Water Table Surface Map is included as Figure 4. A summary of the current ground water gauging data is shown below: Well ID Screened Interval (x to y ft. BGS) Bottom of Well (ft. The water table has a seasonal high depth to water of approximately 8 to 14.5 feet bgs. 3.0 NATURAL ATTENUATION / NATURAL SOURCE ZONE DEPLETION STATUS During the June 2023 sampling event, natural attenuation parameters were collected from monitoring wells MW-2R, MW-9 and MW-10. A summary of field and natural attenuation parameters collected during the June 2023 sampling event are summarized in Table 6A. Free product has not been observed at the site. A CAP has not been completed for this incident. No contaminant reduction milestones have been established. In June 2023, a Mann-Kendall Toolkit for Plume Stability Analysis was prepared for individual BTEX constituents and naphthalene for MW-1/MW-1R and naphthalene for MW-2/MW-2R. The results of the analysis indicate that benzene and toluene concentrations observed in MW-1/MW-1R are decreasing. No trend could currently be established for the remaining constituents in MW-1/MW-1R or naphthalene in MW-2/MW-2R. A copy of the Mann-Kendall Toolkit for Plume Stability Analysis is included as Appendix D. 4.0 CONCLUSIONS • On June 5, 2023, nine Type II monitoring wells were gauged, purged and/or sampled. • Six Type II monitoring wells (MW-1R, MW-4, MW-7, MW-8, MW-11 and MW-12) lacked sufficient well volume for lab analysis. • Ground water flow was generally toward the northeast with an average horizontal hydraulic gradient of approximately 0.20 feet per foot. • No concentrations of requested method constituents that exceeded the MACs were reported in the ground water samples collected from during the June 2023 sampling event.
