EXECUTIVE SUMMARY A groundwater sampling event was conducted on March 19, 2024. Groundwater contamination is restricted to MW-1, the source well. Benzene and MTBE decreased significantly; ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylenes remained at minor levels. The alcohols were mixed: TAA increased but TBA decreased. The other monitor wells and the site water supply well are non- detect. C. SITE HISTORY and CHARACTERIZATION An environmental assessment discovered groundwater contamination around the site’s UST basin. The assessment was performed by Geologic Resources in November 2020 for United Bank of Raleigh. A Site Check performed in April 2021 determined that the release occurred through the fill bucket of UST-4. A phase 2 LSA, with a vertical extent well, determined that the groundwater contamination is restricted to the upper portion of the unconfined aquifer at the UST basin – MW-1. . E. SITE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION 1.0 GROUNDWATER SAMPLING 1.1 General The following wells were sampled: (1) the site water supply well (WSW-1), and (2) MWs 1-2-3- 4, and the vertical extent well (VMW-1). The groundwater samples were collected March 19, 2014 and the samples were analyzed by method 6200B with oxygenates. The results are presented in Table B-4, Table 1 is an analysis history, and individual MTBE, TAA, and TBA contaminant concentration maps are attached. 2 1.2 Sampling Results 1.2.1 Water Supply Well (WSW-1) WSW-1 was non detect, same as the prior sampling events. 1.2.2 Monitor Wells Compounds were only detected in MW-1, the source well. MTBE, tert-Amyl Alcohol, and tert- Butyl Alcohol were detected above their groundwater standards, but well below their gross contaminant levels. A summary follows: MW-1: MTBE, tert-Amyl Alcohol, and tert-Butyl Alcohol > standard, but < GCL, MW-2: non detect, MW-3: non detect, MW-4: non detect, and VMW-1: non-detect. A comparison with the last sampling event (9-23) follows. MW-1: benzene and MTBE decreased significantly (benzene to non detect (<2.5 ppb)), ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylenes remain at trace levels TAA increase approximately 40% but TBA decrease approximately 30%, MW-2: remain non detect, MW-3: remain non detect, MW-4: remain non detect, and VMW-1: remain non detect. 1.3 Sampling Protocol The monitor wells were sampled with new, disposable bailers after purging three well casing volumes. The samples were placed in laboratory provided vials, fixed with a chain of custody, and placed on ice for shipment between the field, office, and laboratory. They were refrigerated at our office and picked up by a PACE Analytical courier the following day. The water supply well was sampled from an outside tap after running the water for fifteen minutes. It was handled as described above. F. FREE PRODUCT - not applicable G. SOIL REMEDIATION – not applicable H. GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION Currently the site is ranked Intermediate and natural attenuation is being utilized. 3 I. CONCUSIONS The groundwater contamination remains concentrated at the source area. MTBE, tert-Amyl Alcohol, and tert-Butyl Alcohol are present in MW-1 above their standards, but the levels are well below their GCLs. Benzene and MTBE have now had consecutive fall to spring decreases. The reason is unclear as the water levels are not significantly different. The plume has not migrated into the down gradient wells J. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP - Sample Duplicate RPD - Relative Percent Difference NC - Not Calculable. SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected. Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA Method 8260. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for each analyte is a combined concentration. Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as "Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes. TNI - The NELAC Institute. ANALYTE QUALIFIERS The EPA or method required sample preservation degrades this compound, therefore acceptable recoveries may not be achieved in sample matrix spikes.P5 REPORT OF LABORATORY ANALYSIS This report shall not be reproduced, except in full, without the written consent of Pace Analytical Services, LLC.Date: 03/26/2024 10:58 AM Pace Analytical Services, LLC 9800 Kincey Ave. Suite 100 Huntersville, NC 28078 (704)875-9092 Page 21 of 25 #=CR# QUALITY CONTROL DATA CROSS REFERENCE TABLE Pace Project No.: Project: 92720084 JIM'S GROCERY Lab ID Sample ID QC Batch Method QC Batch Analytical Method Analytical Batch 92720084001 840534WSW-1 SM 6200B 92720084002 840534MW-1 SM 6200B 92720084003 840534MW-2 SM 6200B 92720084004 840534MW-3 SM 6200B 92720084005 840534MW-4 SM 6200B 92720084006 840534VMW-1 SM 6200B REPORT OF LABORATORY ANALYSIS This report shall not be reproduced, except in full, without the written consent of Pace Analytical Services, LLC.Date: 03/26/2024 10:58 AM Pace Analytical Services, LLC 9800 Kincey Ave. Suite 100 Huntersville, NC 28078 (704)875-9092 Page 22 of 25 Page 23 of 25 Page 24 of 25 Page 25 of 25
