Sarah - As discussed, this is a notification to NCDEQ Solid Waste that Duke Energy intends to replace and relocate one
shallow observation well (SOW-2) part of the Structural Fill north stability feature dewatering system. SOW-2 has
become dry, and therefore is not a viable observation location for monitoring the dewatering system operations during
the stability feature construction.
Replacement observation well SOW-2A will be located further within the Ash Basin finger. The well construction details,
including that the well will be screened in ash, will be similar to the shallow observation well details provided in the July
7, 2023 submittal (FID 1810470). The attached figure shows the approximate location for SOW-2A; SOW-2 will be
abandoned.
Please let me know if you have any questions with this notification.
Regards,
Ashley Healy

1. EXISTING TOPOGRAPHIC CONTOURS WITH STABILITY FEATURE LIMITS DEPICT LIMITS OF PREVIOUS
EXCAVATION PHASE. IT IS THE INTENT OF THESE DRAWINGS THAT EXCAVATION LIMITS FOR PREVIOUS
PHASE BE ACHIEVED PRIOR TO COMMENCEMENT OF EXCAVATION FOR SUBSEQUENT PHASE.
2. MAXIMUM CCR EXCAVATION SLOPE WITHIN THE LIMITS OF EACH EXCAVATION PHASE SHALL BE
11-HORIZONTAL TO 1-VERTICAL, EXCEPT WHERE SHOWN. EXCAVATION SLOPES IN NATURAL SOILS
OUTSIDE THE STABILITY FEATURES ARE LIMITED TO 3-HORIZONTAL TO 1-VERTICAL. FIELD FIT
EXCAVATION SLOPES TO TIE INTO ACTUAL BASE OF CCR GRADES AS NECESSARY.
3. MAINTAIN A MINIMUM OFFSET OF 25-FT FROM TRANSMISSION TOWERS AND POLES WITHIN THE
PROPOSED EXCAVATION AREAS. COORDINATE WITH DUKE ENERGY PRIOR TO EXCAVATION WITHIN
100-FT OF TRANSMISSION TOWERS.
4. CONTRACTOR SHALL MANAGE SURFACE WATER RUNOFF TO MINIMIZE PONDING AT THE TOE OF CCR
EXCAVATIONS.
