BACKGROUND
The Town of Kernersville Landfill (Site) is a closed, unlined municipal solid waste landfill located on
approximately 58.2 acres in Forsyth and Guilford Counties, NC, approximately 10 miles north of the Town
of Kernersville (Town). The waste disposal area comprises approximately 13.8 acres. The facility was issued
a Permit to Operate by the North Carolina Department of Waste Management, Solid Waste Section on May
15, 1985, and a Letter of Closure on December 10, 1991.
The landfill is zoned residential/agricultural and is bound on the east and west by open fields and woodlands.
The landfill is bound on the north by property owned by Waste Management and farther north by Freeman
Road, and on the south by an unnamed tributary of Belews Creek.
The landfill consists of eight landfill gas (LFG) probes located on the Town's property (designated GW-1
through GW-7) and four LFG probes shared with the Waste Management Piedmont Landfill (designated
GW-8 and GP-9 through GP-11). Historical and current LFG monitoring data shows LFG probes GW-1 and
GW-2R have had consistent exceedances of the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) for methane and that these
LFG concentrations seem to be stable. During 2023 the methane levels ranged from 34.9% volume to 5.4%
volume and 60.3% volume to 52.8% volume in GW-1 and GW-2R, respectively. The 2023 Quarterly
Methane Monitoring Report Data is included in the attached Appendix.
CORRECTIVE ACTIONS
In July 2012, Joyce Engineering (Joyce), serving as the Town's Landfill Environmental Consultant at that
time, developed the Landfill Gas Monitoring Plan for the Site. This plan included LFG probe installation and
monthly monitoring, in which LEL exceedances for methane were discovered. Due to methane LEL
exceedances Joyce prepared and implemented the September 2013 Landfill Gas Corrective Action Plan and
installed three passive gas vents along the northern limits of the landfill waste boundary. Since July 2016,
WR has been serving as the Town's Landfill Environmental Consultant and has continued the monthly
monitoring activities. In 2018 the Landfill Gas Corrective Action Plan Addendum was approved and executed
which included the installation of an additional two passive gas vents located along the northern limits of
the landfill waste boundary in the areas of concern; one located near GW-1 and another near GW-2R. In
October 2023, WR altered these passive gas vents by installing a turbine ventilator to each one as a means
of secondary and increased ventilation.
LFG probe and vent locations are shown on Figure 1. Photos of the installed turbine ventilators are included
in the attached Appendix.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on a historical review of the LFG monitoring data and the installation of additional ventilation, WR
and the Town of Kernersville request a reduction in landfill gas monitoring from monthly to quarterly.
