December 28, 2021 Edward Lyles Tarheel Services 5030 Southern Way Greensboro, NC 27405 Reference: Soil Sampling and Analytical Shreeji Maharaj, Inc. dba Quick Food Mart 4302 W. Gate City Boulevard Greensboro, North Carolina Facility ID # 00-0-0000002809 Dear Mr. Lyles: Please find enclosed a report summarizing the soil sampling activities near two existing monitor wells at this facility. A recent Groundwater Monitoring Report at 4302 W. Gate City Boulevard showed increases in groundwater contaminant concentrations in Monitor Well #2 and Monitor Well #5. On December 7, 2021 Paragon Environmental Consultants, Inc. mobilized to the site in order to conduct assessment sampling in the immediate vicinity of these two monitor wells as directed by the Winston-Salem Regional Office of the NC DEQ. The results of our findings are summarized herein. One soil sample was obtained directly adjacent to both of the monitor wells at depths approximately 12 inches above the groundwater table as measured prior to the sample collection. The soil samples were collected using a direct push Geoprobe® sampling rig. Paragon obtained the samples from in-situ soils at depths of approximately 11 feet below surface grade near MW-2 and approximately 12 feet below surface grade near MW-5. The sample from the vicinity of MW-2 was labeled as MW-2 Soil Sample (MW-2SS), and the sample from the vicinity of MW-5 was labeled as MW-5 Soil Sample (MW-5SS). Following the sampling activities, the boreholes were backfilled with the bentonite and patched at surface grade with concrete. The two soil samples obtained from this facility were submitted to Waypoint Analytical, LLC for laboratory analysis according to Gasoline Range Organics (GRO). GRO tests for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) from low boiling-point fuels such as gasoline, aviation fuel, and gasohol. The current action level for GRO constituents is 50 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg). The sample from the vicinity of MW-2 indicated a TPH level by GRO of 1,190 mg/kg, and the sample from the vicinity of MW-5 showed TPH - GRO at a concentration of 414 mg/kg. Both of these concentrations are in excess of the NC DEQ action level of 50 mg/kg. Table 1 summarizes the laboratory analytical results for 4302 W. Gate City Boulevard in Greensboro, NC. PARAGON Environmental Consultants, Inc. P.O. Box 157 • Thomasville, NC 27361-0157 Business Ph: (336) 669-6037 • Fax: (336) 476-7708 Sample MW-2SS, which had the higher TPH level, was then also analyzed by EPA Method 8260 and for Volatile Petroleum Hydrocarbons (VPH). Sample MW-2SS indicated Naphthalene by Method 8260 at a level of 1.33 mg/kg which is above the lowest Maximum Soil Contaminant Concentration (MSCC) of 0.16 mg/kg. C5-C8 Aliphatics was detected at 153 mg/kg, and C9-C22 Aromatics was reported at a concentration of 33.3 mg/kg. These two carbon fractions have lowest MSCCs of 68 mg/kg and 31 mg/kg, respectively. All three of these constituents were significantly below the Residential Standards which would indicate that no new release in either area is occurring at this subject facility. Table 2 summarizes the “Risk-Based” soil analytical results, and Attachment A contains a copy of the laboratory analytical report and the chain-of-custody record for the soil samples obtained on December 7, 2021. Based on the findings from our investigation showing petroleum concentrations below the applicable “Risk-Based” standards in the two areas directed to be sampled by the DEQ, Paragon recommends no further actions to be conducted by the current UST owner at Quick Food Mart. Please contact our office at (336) 669-6037 if you have any questions regarding the site check activities. Sincerely, Brandon Moore, L.G. Paragon Environmental Consultants, Inc.
