AECOM Technical Services, Inc. of North Carolina (AECOM) on behalf of Speedway, LLC
(Speedway) is presenting this Site Check Report for the above referenced store (Figure 1). On
September 6, 2023, a third-party tester discovered a line tightness failure corresponding to the
10,000-gallon premium underground storage tank (UST). A UST-17B form was filed with the North
Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), included as Attachment A. To determine
if a release may have occurred to the environment, assessment activities were conducted as
documented in this report. A soil boring log has been included as Attachment B, and the
laboratory report for the samples collected during the site check has been included as Attachment
C.
One previous release has been associated with this site – Incident #42117 from September 2017
closed with no further action in August 2018.
SITE ACTIVITIES
Soil Sampling
On September 20, 2023, AECOM met with Sweetwater Utility Exploration (Sweetwater) at the site
to collect a soil sample – SB-1 near the 10,000-gallon premium spill bucket (Figure 2). Sweetwater
air knifed the soil borings to a depth of approximately 3 feet below ground surface (bgs), then
AECOM used a hand auger to collect the soil sample. The sample was collected at approximately
3 feet bgs and screened with a photoionization detector (PID). A soil boring log is included as
Attachment B. AECOM bottled the sample for laboratory analysis for total petroleum
hydrocarbons for gasoline range organics (TPH-GRO). The samples were submitted to Pace
Analytical Services in Huntersville, North Carolina for analysis at the Huntersville, North Carolina
laboratory.

RESULTS
Based on laboratory analysis, the soil sample collected from SB-1 did not exceed the soil
contamination action level established by NCDEQ. Laboratory analysis did not detect
concentrations of TPH-GRO in sample SB-1. The laboratory report is included in Attachment C.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on laboratory analysis of the soil sample collected near the 10,000-gallon premium UST spill
bucket, no NCDEQ action levels were exceeded. AECOM, on behalf of Speedway recommends
that this release be closed out with no further action.

Premium line tightness testing failed 9/6/2023. Issue attributed to flex connector in STP sump. Liquid in
Premium STP sump was removed. STP sump was hydro tested with failing results. The Premium line is
out of service until repaired. Repair scheduled for 9/7/2023 and Site check pending.
