Mike, I have been trying to find a NC certified lab that can run 8015C for ethanol and have run into a few obstacles. I’m not very familiar with that lab method. From what I have been told while asking around, that appears to be an antiquated method and is rarely used in NC anymore. This being especially since it is not on the NCTF approved list. I also believe we would need direct TF permission to run the samples for that method. I think we will have a hard time getting TF approval to run an analysis on a constituent that showed us as J values in most of the wells in question, well below the 2L Standard of 4,000 ppb. I would understand running this analysis a little better had the concentrations been anywhere close to 4,000. The maximum concentration was 132 in WSW-1. I’m afraid this could turn into a wild goose chase. Just sharing my thoughts. William Regenthal, P. G. They use Pace a lot so I suggested he call them to see what bottles are needed and see if they will agree to the $48 quoted to UST. I could only guess you would use standard preserved VOAs, but then explained we aren’t asking for any special trips, etc. Just grab this while routine sampling. We are trying to test theory with lab methods that could lead to a guidance change. It may end up with staff having to go do this ourselves, but for as long as a site is 100% reimbursable I don’t see what the issue is from the consultants unless they really don’t want to find out ethanol is present at a site. If that is the case then we will have to go sample ourselves which will require more approval from the money handlers. Luckily I was abreast of the situation and was able to explain to him what was going on with the lab methods and why we were making this ask (mainly on 2 incidents). I further explained that Carin and Wayne are involved and gave the TF instruction of leaving the lab code blank. After I fully explained why this is happening and the negligible cost of the 8015C, he was more in agreement that this probably is something we should be looking into. He was completely unaware of why you were asking for 8015C and the blowback was because with no more explanation, it seemed you were requesting a unapproved method on samples less than 2L. With no backstory, that sort of thing is going to be sent directly to Terry Kennedy for an argument. The point of this exercise is determine if ethanol was a lab artifact (or cross contaminant) or is really in the WSW and if the later is true we need to investigate further into the source and perhaps converse with PIB.
