Free-Product Map Appendices Appendix A: Piezometer Logs Free Product Recovery Report One Stop #15 Candler, North Carolina 3 Introduction This report presents information on free-product assessment activities conducted at One Stop #15 (see Figure 1 for site location) located at 146 Wiggins Road in Candler, North Carolina in March 2023, and April 2023. Four piezometers were installed around monitoring well MW-1 to delineate the horizontal boundary of the free-product on March 27, 2023, and they were gauged and surveyed on April 7, 2023. Type and Thickness of Free Product Free-phase petroleum (0.59 feet) was detected in monitoring well MW-1 on March 11, 2016, during the Comprehensive Site Assessment (CSA) groundwater sampling activities. Historically, the product thickness measured in MW-1 has ranged from 0.25 feet to in excess of 4 feet. On March 27, 2023, four piezometers (PZ-1, PZ-2, PZ-3, and PZ-4) were installed surrounding MW-1 (Figure 2). On April 7, 2023, the product levels were checked in MW-1 and PZ-1 through PZ-4. The product thickness detected in MW-1 was 0.59 feet. The product thickness detected in PZ-1 was 0.05 feet. Free-product was not detected in piezometers PZ-2, PZ-3 and PZ-4. Each piezometer (PZ-1 through PZ-4) was installed to a depth of 30 ft/bls. All four piezometers were installed with 15 feet of screen and 15 feet of casing. The boring logs are located in Appendix A. Once the product levels were checked, each well was surveyed based on the elevation of MW-1 to establish a localized groundwater flow direction in the immediate vicinity of MW-1. The localized groundwater flow direction is to the southeast (Figure 3). The free-product is creating a depression in the water table in the localized area. Table 1 lists the product thicknesses measured in monitoring wells at the site during the April 7, 2023, product gauging event. Rate of Return of Free Product The rate of return of product in each well was calculated by taking the thickness after 8 hours and dividing by 8 hours giving the rate of return in inches per hour. The rate of return for product in MW-1 was previously measured at 0.34 inches/hour when the product thickness exceeded 4 feet. The rate of return for product in PZ-1 has not been measured to date given the low amount measured on April 7, 2023. Method of Free Product Recovery and Justification No free-product was removed during this event. Free Product Recovery Report One Stop #15 Candler, North Carolina 4 Total Amount of Free Product Recovered to Date To date, approximately 91.75 gallons of free-product (product and vapor) have been recovered during previous MMPE and AFVR events since free-product recovery began in 2019. Costs Associated with Free Product Recovery The total cost of the product recovery events to date is $38,355.65. This amount, divided by the total amount of liquid recovered to date (91.75 gallons) is $418.05 per gallon of free-product recovered. Conclusions and Recommendations Free-product keeps returning in monitoring wells MW-1 and is now present in PZ-1. A total of 91.75 gallons of free-product has been removed since 2019. The unit cost per gallon of product recovered during these events was $418.05 per gallon. Based on this information, mechanical free-product removal has been successful since the original product levels exceeded 4 feet in thickness to the current 0.59 feet. Currently, Samir Enterprises, LLC. is planning on replacing the UST system located at the site. During the UST removal activities contaminated soil will be removed from the Dispenser 1/MW-1 location; therefore, SEI recommends excavating as much soil that is possible from this location in an attempt to remove petroleum saturated soils causing the free-product levels in the groundwater. SEI also recommends reinstalling monitoring well MW-1 and replacing PZ-1 with a 2-inch monitoring well that can also serve as a recovery well if AFVR or MMPE events are reinstated.
