Light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL; aka free product) was discovered beneath three dispensers during an underground storage tank (UST) inspection on June 27, 2007. In February 2010, five USTs were removed from the site and soil samples taken from the excavation confirmed the presence of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH). The site is currently operating as a restaurant, Pizza Mia Heritage Grill. The purpose of this report is to document the latest groundwater sampling event. On November 10, 2022, CATLIN Engineers and Scientists (CATLIN) personnel measured groundwater at approximately six feet deep across the site. Groundwater samples from five monitoring wells and three water supply wells were collected. The samples were submitted for laboratory analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) per Standard Method (SM) 6200B [plus ethylene dibromide (EDB), methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and diisopropyl ether (DIPE)]. The monitoring well samples were also analyzed per Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 6020B (Total Lead Analysis). Laboratory results did not indicate any dissolved petroleum constituents above their respective method detection limits in the samples from MW-02, WSW-1, and WSW-18. An estimated concentration (“J”-value) of MTBE was detected in the WSW-28 sample. 1,2-Dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) was detected in the MW-01 sample at a concentration greater than was established in Title 15A of the North Carolina Administrative Code, Subchapter 2L, Section .0202 Groundwater Quality Standards (2L GWQS), but below the Gross Contaminant Level (GCL). No monitoring well samples contained detectable amounts of lead. Contaminant concentrations appear to have decreased in samples from monitoring well MW-05 since the previous sampling event in May 2022 (CATLIN, 2022). Lead has fallen below detectable levels in all monitoring well samples. In November 2022, CATLIN conducted slug tests at monitoring wells MW-02 and MW-05. Slug test analyses resulted in hydraulic conductivities of 0.00001623 centimeters per second (cm/sec) and 0.000004257 cm/sec at wells MW-02 and MW-05, respectively. The hydraulic conductivities were utilized to perform predictive modeling to help determine potential impacts of the 1,2-DCA from MW-01. Modeling results indicated the non-compliant 1,2-DCA should not migrate beyond approximately nine feet downgradient of MW-01. The closest receptor is water supply well WSW-2, located 85 feet downgradient. Therefore, the model predicts dissolved contamination from MW-01 should not impact the well. Due to groundwater flow discrepancies compared to the May 2022 sampling event, CATLIN collected additional gauging data on December 2, 2022. Groundwater was measured at approximately five feet deep across the site and the flow direction was towards the east. NCDEQ; 33873_Cheek Road Grocery CATLIN Engineers and Scientists CATLIN Project No. 221007 3 December 2022 Based on the low levels of 1,2-DCA and the results of the groundwater modeling, CATLIN recommends the site be a candidate for No Further Action (NFA) status with a Notice of Residual Petroleum (NRP) for groundwater. 3.0 SCOPE OF SERVICES The scope of services for this report was performed in general accordance with CATLIN proposal number 221007.03P, dated September 19, 2022. Services were authorized by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s (NCDEQ’s) Task Authorization (TA) #03, approved on September 20, 2022, and Contract Number N122019D. The approved scope of services for this Task Authorization included to: • Obtain access to sample water supply wells WSW-3, WSW-17, and WSW-28; • Gauge and collect groundwater samples from five monitoring wells (MW-01 through MW-05) and six water supply wells (WSW-1, WSW-2, WSW-3, WSW-17, WSW-18, and WSW-28); • Analyze 13 water samples (five monitoring wells, six water supply wells, one trip blank, and one field blank) via SM 6200B (plus EDB, MTBE, and DIPE); • Analyze the five monitoring well samples via EPA 6020B (Total Lead Analysis); • Conduct slug testing on select monitoring wells; • Perform fate and transporting modeling to determine potential impacts to downgradient receptors; and • Prepare and submit a subsequent monitoring report documenting the site activities. CATLIN was unable to acquire an access agreement for the properties with water supply wells WSW-2, WSW-3, and WSW-17; therefore, these wells were not sampled. As previously discussed, to verify gauging results, CATLIN performed an additional gauging event in December 2022. The remaining scope of services was conducted in general accordance with the approved TA. 4.0 SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION The Cheek Road Grocery site is located at 5801 Cheek Road, Durham, Durham County, North Carolina (Figures 1, 2, and 3). Summarized available historical sampling and gauging data are provided in Appendix A. Site photographs are presented in Appendix B. 4.1 UST OWNER AND OPERATOR INFORMATION Five USTs and one above ground storage tank (AST) historically operated at the site. The tanks were reportedly owned by Jerry Hinesley and operated at Cheek Road Grocery prior to their removal in 2010 (HNES, 2010). Due to Mr. Hinesley’s financial situation, the site was accepted into the North Carolina NCDEQ; 33873_Cheek Road Grocery CATLIN Engineers and Scientists CATLIN Project No. 221007 4 December 2022 UST Section Trust Fund Branch State Lead Program in 2020 (Powers, 2020). Available information regarding UST owners/operators is presented on Table 1. 4.2 UST/AST INFORMATION Based on information provided in the 20-Day Report, one 8,000-gallon gasoline, one 4,000-gallon gasoline, one 550-gallon kerosene, and two 1,000-gallon gasoline USTs, as well as one 1,000-gallon kerosene AST were removed between February 23 and 24, 2010. These tanks were owned and operated from April 21, 1978 to February 23, 2010 (HNES, 2010). Available UST and AST system information is presented in Table 1 and the approximate former UST and AST locations are illustrated on Figure 3. 4.3 CONTAMINANT SOURCE INVENTORY A petroleum release was discovered on June 27, 2007, during a UST inspection. LNAPL was observed under three of the dispensers, and a soil sample confirmed TPH contamination (HNES, 2007). 4.4 SITE CHARACTERISTICS The site is currently owned by Larry L. Ricks and operates as a restaurant, Pizza Mia Heritage Grill. The site consists of the store building, sheds to the east and west of the restaurant building, a residence further to the north of the property, and an asphalt paved parking lot. Site photographs are provided in Appendix B. 4.5 OWNERS AND OCCUPANTS OF ADJOINING/NEARBY PROPERTIES AND LAND USE Properties in the site vicinity are a mix of businesses, residences, agricultural land, and forest. The site is bound by Cheek Road to the south, residences adjoin the property to the east and west, and wooded land is present to the north. 4.6 RECEPTOR INFORMATION Conducting a receptor survey was outside the scope of this monitoring event. CATLIN conducted the most recent receptor survey for the Cheek Road Grocery site in August 2021. Pertinent receptor information is summarized below. Potential receptors are illustrated on Figure 2 and receptor information obtained from CATLIN (2021) is shown on Table 2. NCDEQ; 33873_Cheek Road Grocery CATLIN Engineers and Scientists CATLIN Project No. 221007 5 December 2022 Based on utility data obtained from the City of Durham, municipal water is not available to the site vicinity. Twenty-eight water supply wells have been identified within 1,500 feet of the site. There is one active-potable well (WSW-3) within 250 feet of the site. Between 250 and 500 feet, five active- potable wells were identified. Thirteen active potable wells are located between 500 to 1,000 feet from the site, and the remaining nine are between 1,000 and 1,500 feet. No non-potable wells were observed within the site vicinity. Four surface water bodies are located within 1,500 feet of the site. Three of the ponds are located between 500 and 1,000 feet, and one is located approximately 1,390 feet from the site. They are all small ponds created by damming intermittent streams. 4.7 PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS AND REMEDIAL ACTIVITIES Following the discovery of the release in 2007, a Notice of Violation (NOV) was sent to Jerry Hinesley requiring a site check to be conducted. On July 13, 2010, a 20-Day Report was submitted by Henry Nemargut Engineering Services (HNES) documenting the removal of five USTs, removal of one AST, and the excavation of 240 tons of impacted soil on February 23 and 24, 2010 by Zebra Environmental & Industrial Services, Inc. A Notice of Regulatory Requirement (NORR) dated February 25, 2019 required a Limited Site Assessment (LSA) be conducted at the site; however, due to Mr. Hinesley’s financial hardships, the LSA was not conducted at that time (Powers, 2020). CATLIN was contracted by NCDEQ to perform an LSA in 2021. One permanent Type II monitoring well (MW-01) was installed and sampled for soil and groundwater. Four targeted analytes were detected in the soil sample collected from five to seven feet below land surface (BLS) [MW-01 (5.0-7.0)] above their respective Soil-to-Groundwater (STGW) maximum soil contaminant concentrations (MSCC), but all were below their Residential and Industrial/Commercial MSCC. 1,2-DCA was detected in the groundwater sample above its 2L GWQS, but below its GCL. A receptor survey identified a total of 28 active-potable water supply wells, 19 of which were within 1,000 feet of the site. Municipal water was reported to not be available in the site vicinity. No sensitive land use features were observed within a 1,500 radius from the site (CATLIN, 2021). CATLIN conducted a monitoring event in May 2022. Four Type II monitoring wells (MW-02 through MW-05) were installed and one soil sample was collected from the MW-05 boring between five and six feet BLS and analyzed for VOCs, semi-VOCs, and carbon-chain fractions. No targeted analytes were detected above their STGW MSCC. Groundwater samples were collected from all monitoring wells and two water supply wells (WSW-1 and WSW-18). 1,2-DCA was detected above its 2L GWQS in the groundwater NCDEQ; 33873_Cheek Road Grocery CATLIN Engineers and Scientists CATLIN Project No. 221007 6 December 2022 sample from MW-05. Lead was reported in all of the monitoring well samples and above its 2L GWQS in the MW-01 and MW-02 samples. No targeted analytes were above the laboratory reporting limits in the water supply well samples (CATLIN, 2022). Summarized available historical sampling and gauging data from previous consultants are provided in Appendix A. 5.0 REGIONAL AND SITE GEOLOGY AND HYDROGEOLOGY 5.1 SOIL AND BEDROCK As defined in the Geologic Map of North Carolina, published by the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Community Development (1985), the site lies within the Piedmont physiographic province. The site is underlain by the Durham-Sandford Triassic Basin, which consists of a collection of sedimentary rocks including conglomerate, fanglomerate, sandstone, and mudstone. Boring logs from CATLIN (2022) indicate that silty sand is present to approximately five feet BLS. Clay was encountered from approximately five to ten feet BLS. Silt was observed at further depths to boring termination at 15 feet BLS. 5.2 HYDROGEOLOGY Groundwater - The 2020 Visual Hydrogeologic Framework (VHF) – North Carolina Hydrogeological Database did not identify sufficient boreholes near the site to draw a cross-section. Surface Water – Four surface water bodies were identified within 1,500 feet of the site. The ponds are located on individual properties and created by damming intermittent streams. 6.0 SITE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION CATLIN conducted field activities on November 10, 2022, in general accordance with the approved TA and pre-prepared Health and Safety Plan (HASP). Upon arrival at the site, potential hazards were evaluated before beginning field work and documented on an electronic Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) form. The JHA form is included in Appendix C. Photographs from the site visit are included in Appendix B. CATLIN personnel gauged and collected groundwater samples for laboratory analysis of VOCs per SM 6200B from five monitoring wells (MW-01 through MW-05) and three water supply wells (WSW-1, WSW-18, and WSW-28). The monitoring well samples were also analyzed for lead via EPA 6020B. Well locations and site features are shown on Figure 3 and well construction details are presented on Table 3. NCDEQ; 33873_Cheek Road Grocery CATLIN Engineers and Scientists CATLIN Project No. 221007 7 December 2022 6.1 GAUGING DATA Historically, depth to water has ranged from 2.46 feet below top of casing (BTOC) (MW-04) to 8.61 feet BTOC (MW-01). Groundwater flow direction has been previously illustrated towards the south-southwest (CATLIN, 2022). During the November 2022 event, CATLIN personnel measured depth to water in five monitoring wells using an electronic water interface probe. To prevent cross contamination, the probe and cabling were decontaminated according to manufacturer’s recommendations between use in each well. Gauging data were recorded on an electronic groundwater sampling form using a tablet device. Gauging procedures were performed in general accordance with North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (NCDENR) and NCDEQ Guidelines, and EPA Region 4 Operating Procedures. On November 10, 2022, depth to water ranged from 3.81 feet BTOC (MW-01) to 9.21 feet BTOC (MW-03) in the shallow/Type II wells. LNAPL was not encountered during this monitoring event. The depths to water measured in monitoring wells MW-01 and MW-05 were above their respective screened intervals. Based on groundwater elevations calculated for this monitoring period, groundwater flow direction was generally towards the east. During the previous event (May 2022), the groundwater flow direction was calculated to be toward the southwest. To verify the new flow direction, CATLIN remobilized to the site on December 2, 2022 to collect additional gauging data. Depth to water ranged from 2.57 feet BTOC (MW-04) to 8.59 feet BTOC (MW-03). Based on this gauging event, groundwater was illustrated toward the east. Monitoring well gauging results for events conducted by CATLIN are presented in Table 3. Groundwater elevations for the November and December 2022 gauging events are illustrated on Figures 4A and 4B, respectively. Groundwater sampling forms are provided in Appendix C. 6.2 SAMPLING DATA Following gauging, the monitoring wells were sampled in accordance with NCDEQ Guidelines and EPA Region 4 Low Flow Operating Procedures. Prior to obtaining a representative groundwater sample, the wells were purged by removing a minimum of three well volumes. In order to minimize turbidity, a peristaltic pump (geopump) and new disposable tubing were used to purge the well. The tubing was set to the approximate midpoint of the well screen and groundwater was pumped at a rate of approximately 0.04 gallons per minute (gpm) (MW-01) and 0.067 gpm (MW-02 through MW-05). Groundwater field parameter data were measured at one-minute intervals using an In-Situ Aqua TROLL 600 Multiparameter Sonde (Aqua TROLL). The Aqua TROLL measured specific conductivity, pH, oxidation reduction- NCDEQ; 33873_Cheek Road Grocery CATLIN Engineers and Scientists CATLIN Project No. 221007 8 December 2022 potential (ORP), dissolved oxygen, and temperature, which were recorded utilizing the VuSitu mobile application (version 1.17.12). The Aqua TROLL was decontaminated according to manufacturer’s recommendations and rinsed with distilled water between use at each monitoring well. Groundwater parameter data were transferred from the VuSitu mobile application to the electronic groundwater sampling forms. Copies of the groundwater sampling forms and field data sheets are available in Appendix C. After the monitoring well was purged a minimum of three well volumes, a groundwater sample was collected from the pump tubing directly into laboratory provided glassware, labeled, and placed on ice in an insulated cooler. Each water supply well was allowed to run for 15 minutes before a sample was collected either from a spigot located at the water supply well or from the closest spigot to the well directly into appropriate laboratory-provided, pre-preserved glassware. The samples were immediately labeled and placed on ice in an insulated cooler. A field blank was collected by pouring water from a new, sealed gallon of distilled water directly into laboratory-provided, pre-preserved glassware. The glassware was labeled and placed on ice in an insulated cooler. A laboratory-provided trip blank accompanied the samples for the duration of the site activities. The groundwater samples, field blank, and laboratory-provided trip blank were submitted to Con-Test Analytical Laboratory (Certification NC 652 and NC-DW 25703) in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, under proper chain COC protocol and analyzed per SM 6200B (including EDB, MTBE, and DIPE). In addition, the samples from the five monitoring wells were also analyzed for total lead per EPA Method 6020B. 6.3 SUMMARY OF GROUNDWATER INFORMATION During the August 2021 sampling event, both lead and 1,2-DCA were detected at concentrations above their 2L GWQS in the MW-01 sample. However, during the following event in May 2022, 1,2-DCA was below the method detection limit in MW-01, but above the 2L GWQS in MW-05. No petroleum constituents have been detected at concentrations above GCL. The latest groundwater sampling laboratory results for SM 6200B and EPA 6020B analysis are summarized in Table 4. Historical laboratory results for events conducted by CATLIN are included on Table 5. Monitoring well and water supply well sample analytical results are illustrated on Figures 6 and 7, respectively. A copy of the complete laboratory report and COC documentation are in Appendix D. NCDEQ; 33873_Cheek Road Grocery CATLIN Engineers and Scientists CATLIN Project No. 221007 9 December 2022 Monitoring Wells During the November 2022 monitoring event, five monitoring well groundwater samples (MW-01 through MW-05) were collected and submitted for analysis via SM 6200B (including EDB, MTBE, and DIPE) and EPA Method 6020B (Total Lead Analysis). No analyte concentrations were detected above GCL in any of the monitoring well samples. Analytical results revealed 1,2-DCA above its 2L GWQS in the MW-01 sample. No other targeted analytes were above their 2L GWQS in any of the monitoring well samples. The concentration of lead was below the method detection limit in all samples. Water Supply Wells Groundwater samples were obtained from three water supply wells (WSW-1, WSW-18, and WSW-28). An estimated concentration (“J”-value) of MTBE was detected in the WSW-28 sample, but it was well below the 2L GWQS. No other targeted analytes were detected above their method detection limits in any of the water supply well samples. Trip Blank and Field Blank One laboratory-provided trip blank and one field blank sample were submitted for analysis per SM 6200B (including EDB, MTBE, and DIPE). An estimated (“J”-value) concentration of acetone, a known laboratory relic, was detected in the field blank sample. No other targeted analytes were detected in either sample. 6.4 SUMMARY OF HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY TESTING In order to evaluate hydraulic conductivity at this site, slug tests were conducted in monitoring wells MW-02 and MW-05 on November 14, 2022. The “rising head” slug tests were conducted in the wells by inserting a slug (a three-foot length of welded steel pipe) into the wells, allowing the water in the wells to re-equilibrate to static levels and then quickly removing the slug. The recharge was measured by a pressure transducer inserted down the wells, which measured pressure changes within the well’s water column. The data was sent to a data logger, which converted and recorded the pressure reading to changes in water level from a given referenced point. The data was downloaded and analyzed using Super Slug (a computer type-curve matching program). The slug test analyses resulted in hydraulic conductivities of 0.00001623 cm/sec in MW-02 and 0.000004257 cm/sec in MW-05. The slug test data is provided in Appendix E. NCDEQ; 33873_Cheek Road Grocery CATLIN Engineers and Scientists CATLIN Project No. 221007 10 December 2022 6.5 EVALUATION OF ASSESSMENT INFORMATION Extent of Contamination 1,2-DCA was detected above its 2L GWQS in the sample from MW-01; however, it was well below the GCL. Lead was revealed to be below its method detection limit in all the monitoring well samples. An estimated concentration of MTBE was detected in the sample from water supply well WSW-28. Summaries of monitoring well and water supply well groundwater sample analytical results are illustrated on Figures 5 and 6, respectively. The dissolved phase contaminant plume does not appear to extend horizontally beyond the vicinity of the former UST basins (near MW-01 and MW-05). Contaminant concentrations appear to have decreased in samples from monitoring well MW-05 since the previous sampling event in May 2022. Lead was previously above its 2L GWQS in samples from MW-01 and MW-02; however, it was below the method detection limit in all samples from this monitoring period. Cleanup Levels Achieved Soil – To date, approximately 240 tons of impacted soil have been removed from the site (HNES, 2007). The soil sample collected in 2021 contained some targeted analytes above their STGW MSCC (CATLIN, 2021). However, analytical results of the soil sample obtained from MW-05 in May 2022 reported no analytes above their STGW MSCC. Groundwater – One VOC (1,2-DCA) is above 2L GWQS, but below GCL at the site. LNAPL – LNAPL was not measured during this monitoring period. LNAPL has not been observed at the site since the initial release discovery in 2007. 6.6 EVALUATION OF GROUNDWATER MODELING DATA CATLIN modeled the dissolved 1,2-DCA plume using BioscreenTM, an analytical solute transport model based on the Dominenico model for multidimensional transport of a decaying contaminant species. The model has the ability to simulate advection, dispersion, adsorption, and aerobic decay, as well as anaerobic reactions. BioscreenTM is programmed as a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet Macro. The model was developed for the EPA by the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) Technology Transfer Division at Brooks Air Force Base by Groundwater Services, Inc., Houston, Texas. NCDEQ; 33873_Cheek Road Grocery CATLIN Engineers and Scientists CATLIN Project No. 221007 11 December 2022 The objective of the model was to examine and predict the 1,2-DCA contaminant plume migratory progress from MW-01. CATLIN used current and historical site-specific aquifer data and the most conservative accepted chemical and geochemical data. Once calibrated, CATLIN used the model to predict the plume migration from MW-01. Based on the model results, the non-compliant 1,2-DCA plume should not migrate beyond approximately nine feet downgradient of MW-01. Therefore, the models predict that the closest receptor (water supply well WSW-2), located approximately 85 feet from MW- 01, should not be impacted. The results from the groundwater modeling data are provided in Appendix F. 7.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Conclusions Findings for this monitoring event are summarized below: • Five monitoring well (MW-01 through MW-05) and three water supply well (WSW-1, WSW-18, and WSW-28) groundwater samples were collected and submitted for analysis per SM 6200B. The monitoring well samples were also analyzed for total lead per EPA 6020B. • 1,2-DCA was detected above its 2L GWQS in the groundwater sample from MW-01. • Lead was revealed to be below the method detection limit in all monitoring well samples. • An estimated concentration (“J”-value) of MTBE was detected in the sample from water supply well WSW-28; however, this concentration was well below the 2L GWQS. • Slug tests indicated hydraulic conductivities of 0.00001623 cm/sec and 0.000004257 cm/sec in wells MW-02 and MW-05, respectively. • Groundwater modeling predicts that non-compliant 1,2-DCA concentrations from MW-01 will not impact nearby water supply wells. Recommendations Based on the low levels of 1,2-DCA and the results of the groundwater modeling, CATLIN recommends the site be a candidate for NFA status with a NRP for groundwater. 8.0 LIMITATIONS The groundwater samples analyzed as part of this investigation only provide isolated data points and may not represent conditions at every location in the project area. Analyses and conclusions of this report, being based on interpolation between data points at the project area, may not be completely representative of all site conditions. Conclusions and recommendations of this investigation and report are based on the best available data in an effort to comply with current regulatory requirements. Groundwater Model Description BioscreenTM is an analytical solute transport model based on the Dominenico model for multidimensional transport of a decaying contaminant species. B. Model Assumptions The assumptions for the BioscreenTM model include: 1. The aquifer and flow fields are homogeneous and isotropic. 2. The groundwater is fast enough that molecular diffusion in the dispersion terms can be ignored. 3. Simple groundwater flow conditions exist. 4. The contaminant source is infinite. 5. The model assumes a vertical plume source with constant concentration. 6. Adsorption is a reversible process represented by a linear isotherm. 7. The input values for contaminant concentrations are for model simulation purposes only, and do not necessarily reflect actual field observations. C. Model Execution The objective of the model was to examine and predict the 1,2-Dichloroethane contaminant plume size, concentration, and migratory progress from monitoring well MW-01 to potable water supply well WSW-2, located approximately 85 feet northwest from monitoring well MW-01. CATLIN Engineers and Scientists (CATLIN) attempted to calibrate the model to current site conditions using site specific aquifer characteristics as well as industry accepted ranges of chemical and geochemical data. In order to predict the contaminant migratory progresses from MW-01, CATLIN used current and historical site-specific aquifer data and the most conservative accepted chemical and geochemical data. The model was executed using source concentrations of 0.0019 parts per million (PPM) 1,2-Dichloroethane, which correspond to the highest concentrations detected at the site. In order to provide a conservative analysis, the predictive model assumed an infinite soluble mass of contamination exists at the source area. A hydraulic conductivity of 0.0000102435 centimeters per second (cm/sec) was used, which is an average based off data from slug tests performed on November 14, 2022. A hydraulic gradient of 0.0685 ft/ft was calculated between MW-01 and MW-05 using gauging data from a gauging event in November 2022. D. Results The predictive model was executed using an extended simulation time of 50 years to ensure steady state conditions were achieved. After reviewing the model results and comparing them to the North Carolina Administrative Title 15A 2L Groundwater Quality Standards (2L GWQS) for 1,2-Dichloroethane (0.4 microgram per liter - µg/L), it appears that the non-compliant dissolved plume boundary should not extend beyond approximately 9 feet downgradient from monitoring well MW-01 for 1,2-Dichloroethane. As previously stated, potable water supply well WSW-2 is located approximately 85 feet northwest from monitoring well MW-01. Therefore, this model predicts that the dissolved contamination in the vicinity of MW-01 should not impact the water supply well.
