Services were authorized by the North Carolina Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Task Authorization (TA) #04, accepted March 15, 2023, and Contract Number N122019D. The approved scope of services for this Task Authorization included: •Maintain a sorbent sock in monitoring well MW-1RS, MW-13S, and MW-5, replacing thesocks on a monthly basis for up to six months (between March 2023 and August 2023); •Check for light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL; aka free product) during each monthlyreplacement; •If LNAPL is encountered, bail the LNAPL into the 55-gallon drum stored on-site; and •Prepare a letter report documenting the findings. The Scott & Roberts site is located at 733 Foster Street, Durham, Durham County, North Carolina (See Figures in Attachment A). CATLIN conducted field activities on March 30, April 26, May 24, June 28, July 26, and August 30, 2023 in accordance with the approved TA. Potential hazards were evaluated before beginning field work and their discussion is documented on Daily Activities Logs, provided in Attachment B. Site photographs are provided in Attachment C. NCDEQ; 10568_Scott & Roberts CATLIN Engineers and Scientists CATLIN Project No. 221168 September 2023 September 15, 2023 Page 2 of 3 Sorbent Sock Maintenance During this reporting period, CATLIN replaced the sorbent socks in monitoring wells MW-1RS, MW-13S, and MW-5 on in March, April, May, June, July, and August 2023. During each site visit, small amounts of LNAPL were observed in the sorbent socks. The socks were removed from the wells and wrung out in the 55-gallon drum, which is stored on-site. New sorbent socks were installed in the wells during each site visit. Gauging Activities Following the removal of the sorbent sock, CATLIN personnel measured depth to water and depth to product in monitoring wells MW-1RS, MW-13S, and MW-5 using an electronic water/oil interface probe. Gauging procedures were performed in general accordance with NCDEQ Guidelines and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 4 Operating Procedures. Gauging results and presented on the following table: Date Water Level Measured (mm/dd/yy) MW-1RS MW-13S MW-5 DTW (feet) LNAPL Thickness (feet) DTW (feet) LNAPL Thickness (feet) DTW (feet) LNAPL Thickness (feet) 03/30/23 14.32 0.01 14.11 0.03 9.85 0.02 04/26/23 14.51 NMT 14.24 NMT 10.19 NMT 05/24/23 14.86 NMT 14.49 NMT 10.15 NMT 06/28/23 14.77 NMT 14.56 NMT 9.94 NMT 07/26/23 15.00 NMT 14.70 NMT 10.26 NMT 08/30/23 15.19 NMT 15.16 NMT 10.69 NMT DTW = Depth to Water (from Top of Casing) NMT = No Measurable Thickness LNAPL Recovery As mentioned above, LNAPL was removed as part of the sorbent sock replacement. Following gauging activities, if the well appeared to be impacted by LNAPL, the impacted groundwater was hand-bailed and stored in the 55-gallon drum. Below is a table summarizing the LNAPL recovery during this reporting period: Date of Recovery (mm/dd/yy) MW-1RS MW-13S MW-5 Liquid Removed (gallons) LNAPL Removed (gallons) Liquid Removed (gallons) LNAPL Removed (gallons) Liquid Removed (gallons) LNAPL Removed (gallons) 03/30/23 0.75 0.06 0.75 0.09 0.75 0.05 04/26/23 0.5 None 0.5 None 0.5 None 05/24/23 None None None None None None 06/28/23 None None None None None None 07/26/23 None None None None None None 08/30/23 None None None None None None Gallons removed are approximate. September 15, 2023 Page 3 of 3 NCDEQ; 10568_Scott & Roberts CATLIN Engineers and Scientists CATLIN Project No. 221168 September 2023 Recommendations CATLIN recommends removing the sorbent socks from MW-1RS, MW-13S, and MW-5 and conducting a groundwater sampling event approximately four weeks after sock removal. CATLIN Engineers and Scientists will proceed upon notification of your approval. Should you have any questions or require additional information, please contact us at (919) 838-2875.
