ACTIVITIES On November 9, 2023, South Atlantic Environmental Drilling and Construction Company (SAEDACCO) drilled one soil boring and installed a replacement monitoring well (MW-1R) near the former tank basin. The soil boring location is shown on Figure 2. The boring was drilled to 20 feet below the ground surface (bgs) using a Geoprobe. Water was encountered in the boring at a depth of approximately 15 feet bgs at the time of drilling. Soil samples werecollected from MW-1R at five-foot intervals (5, 10, and 15 feet below the ground surface - bgs). The soil samples were placed into appropriate laboratory-supplied containers, the samples were then placed on ice, and shipped under chain-of-custody to Eurofins Environment Testing in Pensacola, FL for analysis for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by EPA Method 8260, extractable petroleum hydrocarbons (EPH), and volatile petroleum hydrocarbons (VPH) by the MADEP method. Low concentrations of ten VOCs and several VPH and EPH fractions were detected in the soil sample from 5 feet bgs. VPH and EPH fractions were detected in the sample from 10 feet bgs, and one VOC (1,2,4-trimethylbenzene) was detected in the sample from 15 feet. Three compounds (Naphthalene, 4-Isopropyltoluene, and C5-C8 Aliphatics) were detected in the sample from five feet bgs at concentrations (0.261, 0.198, and 120 mg/kg) exceeding their Soil to Water Maximum Soil Contaminant Concentrations (MSCCs). C5-C8 Aliphatics were detected in the sample from 10 feet at a concentration (331 mg/kg) exceeding the soil to water MSCC. No constituents were detected in the soil sample from 15 feet bgs at concentrations above the MSCCs. Soil analytical data is summarized in Table 3;the soil laboratory analytical report is presented in Appendix A. On November 9, 2023 SAEDACCO installed a monitoring well in the boring to a depth of 20 feet; the well included a screened interval from 10 to 20 feet bgs. The well construction record is presented in Appendix B. Water was encountered at a depth of 10.6 feet at the time of sampling. A water sample was collected from the well on November 9, 2023 using a new polyethylene bailer. The sample was placed into appropriate laboratory-supplied containers, the samples were then placed on ice, and shipped under chain-of-custody to Eurofins Environment Testing in Pensacola, FL for analysis for VOCs by EPA Method 6200, VPH by the MADEP method, and Lead by the SW 846 6010D Method. 7 Several VOCs (1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene, 1,3,5-Trimethylbenzene, Ethylbenzene, Isopropylbenzene, Naphthalene, n-Butylbenzene, N-Propylbenzene, sec-Butylbenzene, Toluene, Xylenes), two VPH fractions (C5-C8 Aliphatics, C9-C10 Aromatics), and Lead were detected in the groundwater sample from well MW-1R at concentrations ranging from 6.09 to 4,450 micrograms per liter - ug/L). Concentrations of 1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene, Naphthalene, Xylenes, C5-C8 Aliphatics, C9-C10 Aromatics, and Lead were detected in the groundwater sample from well MW-1R at concentrations above the NCAC 2L groundwater quality standards. None of the analyzed parameters were detected in the groundwater in well MW-1R at concentrations above the NCDEQ Gross Contaminant Levels (GCLs).
