RE: LETTER REPORT – LIMITED GROUNDWATER SAMPLING EVENT W.T. Barlowe 297 North Chester Street Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina Groundwater Incident Number: 8172 UST Number: MO-3240 WR Project Number: 23-0307-EV Mr. Ryals: WithersRavenel, Inc. (WR) has completed this Letter Report to document the limited groundwater sampling event at the W.T. Barlowe site, located at 297 North Chester Street in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina. Activities outlined herein were completed under North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Contract # N70522-C, Task Authorization (TA) TA-01 for the above referenced site, approved by the Federal & State Lead Program on June 30, 2023. WR mobilized to the subject site on July 11, 2023, for the purposes of sampling monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2. The General Location Map is included as Figure 1 and a site map is depicted on Figure 2. Groundwater Sampling On July 11, 2023, WR mobilized to the site to sample monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2. Depth to water ranged from 12.35 feet below top-of-casing (TOC) in MW-2 to 15.75 feet below TOC in MW-1. After measuring depth-to-water within each well slated for sampling, each monitoring well was purged and sampled using new, dedicated, disposable, polyethylene bailers. Following purging, groundwater samples from each monitoring well were decanted directly from the bailers into pre-preserved, laboratory-grade sample containers. Following collection, samples were placed into an ice-chilled cooler followed by transport under proper chain-of- custody to Waypoint Analytical, Inc. (Waypoint) where they were analyzed for VOCs by SM 6200B. WithersRavenel Our People. Your Success. W.T. Barlowe – NCDEQ Inc. #8172 WR Project # 23-0307-EV Letter Report August 2023 2 Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-2 indicated the presence of benzene, 1,2-dibromoethane, and 1,2-dichloroethane above the Gross Contaminant Levels (GCLs). Several other petroleum compounds were present in monitoring well MW-2 in excess of the North Carolina Groundwater Quality Standards (2L Standards) and ten times the North Carolina Surface Water Quality Standards (2B Standards). Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-1 indicated the presence of several petroleum compounds above the 2L Standards and ten times the 2B Standards. Analytical results for these samples are summarized in Table B-4. Groundwater elevations are provided in Table B-9. Field notes, site photographs, and the laboratory analytical report are included in the Attachments. WR appreciates the opportunity to be of service to the Federal & State Lead Program.
