Ms. Ghiold:
WithersRavenel, Inc. (WR) has completed this Letter Report to document the Air Sparge Enhanced Mobile Multi-Phase Extraction (AS/MMPE) event described in task authorization (TA) TA-02 for the above referenced site approved June 19, 2023 under North Carolina Department
of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Contract #N70522-C. WR mobilized to the subject site on
August 7, 2023, for the purpose of performing an AS/MMPE event on select monitoring wells and utilizing air sparge well AS-1 for air injection. The site location is depicted on Figure 1 and site features including monitoring well locations are depicted on Figure 2.
Sparge-Enhanced MMPE Event
WR personnel, along with Advanced Environmental Services, Inc. (Advanced) mobilized to the site on August 7, 2023 for the purposes of performing a 96-hour AS/MMPE event. This event was initiated to reduce the compounds exceeding the Gross Contamination Levels (GCLs) within monitoring wells MW-5 and MW-7. Advanced utilized vacuum extraction equipment mounted
within an enclosed trailer as well as a 6,000-gallon (gal) tanker trailer.
For the AS/MMPE event, Advanced connected to air sparge well AS-1 and utilized an air compressor to deliver air into each air sparge well. Advanced installed a 1-in diameter PVC stingers into well MW-5 and MW-7 at a depth approximately 1-ft beneath the measured groundwater elevation on August 7, 2023. These stingers were plumbed at the surface to a 2.0-
in diameter chemical resistant flexible hose, which was connected to a vacuum truck servicing the vacuum/pressure regenerative blower housed in the equipment trailer. Recovered fluids were stored within a 6,000-gallon tanker trailer. For induction of air for the purposes of sparging, ½-in diameter PVC tubing was placed within AS-1 at depths beneath the measured

groundwater elevation. This tubing was plumbed to a compressor which injected air into air sparge well AS-1. Following the setup, the AS/MMPE system was started and operated continuously for a period
of 96-hours to induce movement and recovery of total fluids from MW-5 and MW-7. Advanced personnel monitored the performance of the AS/MMPE system over the course of the event, adjusting the stinger depths and optimizing recovery as necessary.
On arrival, WR personnel opened and gauged monitoring wells MW-5 and MW-7 with a
decontaminated product/water interface probe. Gauging of LNAPL within these wells showed
the following:
Well ID Depth to
LNAPL/Product Depth to Water Well Depth LNAPL Thickness
MW-5 26.13 26.11 30.00 0.02
MW-7 --- 26.63 30.00 ---
[All measurements shown in feet (ft)] Throughout the course of the AS/MMPE event, effluent emissions ranged from 10,000 parts per million (ppm) to 18,000 ppm. In completion of the AS/MMPE event, a total of 4,170-gallons of
fluids were recovered from MW-5 and MW-7 and based on mass removal calculations, a total of
626.75 pounds or 101.88 gallons of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were removed as vapor. The manifest and disposal document associated with disposal are included as attachments. After completion of the AS/MMPE event, Advanced dismantled the MMPE setup at the location. WR personnel gauged the wells with the interface probe after removal of the stingers and did
not detect measurable LNAPL following the MMPE event. Field notes and site photos for the August 2023 AS/MMPE event are included in Appendix A. The manifest, disposal documents, and the AS/MMPE report associated with the event are included in Appendix B.
WR appreciates the opportunity to be of service to the Federal & State Lead Program. Should you have any questions regarding the attached, please contact us at (919) 469-3340.

Description of Event:
The MMPE event ran from 13:25 August 7, 2023, through 13:25 August 11, 2023. Air Sparge
was conducted at AS-1, simultaneously for the duration of the event. The MMPE system was
active for 96.0 hours. During the event, vacuum at the recovery pump ranged from 19.0 to 22.0
inches of mercury (hg) and stabilized at approximately 19.0 inches of mercury. Airflow rates
ranged from 1,150 to 1,300 feet per minute and stabilized at approximately 1,300 feet per
minute. System temperature ranged from 116.0 – 136.0 degrees F and humidity ranged from
44.0 to 64.0 percent. Field gauged volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) emissions reduced from
18,000 parts per-million (PPM) to 10,000 PPM throughout the event.
Groundwater / Product Mix Recovered:
During the event a total of 4,170 gallons of product/water mix were removed from the site and
properly disposed at a certified North Carolina disposal facility. No free product was recovered
as liquid. Total fluids recovered, was measured based on stick readings conducted during and
following the event. Based on 96.0 hours of operation and a total of 4,170 gallons recovered
during the event, the average groundwater recovery rate was calculated to be approximately 43.43
gallons per hour.
Events Results:
Based on mass-removal calculations 626.75 pounds or 101.88 gallons of VOC’s were removed
as vapor. Following the event, no free product was identified in any well.
