EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This site has an active AS/SVE system to remediate the petroleum contaminated groundwater. This report covers the period May 2020 through October 2020. A summary since the last sampling event: -) Source well, MW-1: -) benzene, toluene, and MTBE decreased, -) all detected compounds remain below gross contaminant levels, and -) outlying wells remain non-detect. SITE HISTORY and CHARACTERIZATION A petroleum release occurred at the former Johnny’s Food Mart (now Huntersville Express) in Huntersville, Mecklenburg County. The release was from the former UST system and the groundwater was impacted. The DENR has required that the monitor wells and eight water supply wells be sampled semi-annually, and an update of the water supply wells and the remediation system presented. This report covers the period May through October 2020. E. SITE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION 1.0 GROUNDWATER SAMPLING 1.1 General All groundwater samples were collected December 8, 2020. The samples were analyzed by methods 6200B and 504.1. The results are presented in Table B-4, Table 1 is an analysis history, and individual and total BTEX contaminant concentration maps are attached. 2 1.2 Water Supply Wells WSW-1 (site well) has been abandoned, and the site is served by municipal water. The following wells were not sampled: WSW-3: shut in - no power to the well. Employee onsite stated that the site now uses municipal water, and that the well is not used. WSW-8: shut in – no power and piping from well cut. Renter stated that the well pump quit working and that the property owner switched to municipal water instead of repairing the well. WSW-9: shut in - property owner stated that the well is no longer in use, and that the power has been cut off. No petroleum compounds were detected in WSWs 2, 4, 5, and 6. The following compounds were detected: MW-2: no petroleum compounds; compounds associated with over shocking a well with chlorine were detected – this is historical with this well. WSW-7: MTBE: 2 ppb. Following are the results from the last sampling event: WSW-2: as above. WSW-7: MTBE: 2 ppb. 1.3 Monitor Wells Compounds were detected above their standards in MW-1. Monitor wells 2 & 8 were not sampled; the site was repaved, and both wells were covered. MW-1: benzene, xylenes, and naphthalene > standard, but < GCL. MWs 3-4-5-6-7 & VMW-1: non-detect. A comparison with the last sampling event follows. MW-1: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and naphthalene decrease. MWs 3-4-5-6-7 & VMW-1: remain non-detect. 1.4 Sampling Protocol The water supply wells were sampled from taps after running the water at full strength for fifteen minutes, the taps were slowed before taking the samples to prevent aeration. The monitor wells were sampled with new, disposable bailers after purging three well casing volumes. The samples were placed in laboratory provided vials, fixed with a chain of custody, and placed on ice for shipment between the field, office, and laboratory. They were delivered to PACE Analytical on December 11, 2020. F. FREE PRODUCT – not applicable G. SOIL REMEDIATION – not applicable 3 H. GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION The system ran for 98 days. A total of 2,480 pounds were removed; the majority through SVE wells #1 & 2 (source area). A list of the down times follows 05-09 to 05-14 compressor 06-06 to 06-08 power surge - fuse 06-19 to 06-22 compressor 07-18 to 07-24 fuse 08-14 to 08-19 fuse 09-13 to 09-15 fuse 09-21 to 09-22 compressor 10-03 to 10-06 compressor 10-18 to 10-23 compressor oil Monthly operational costs are approximately $500/month for electricity and telemetry; maintenance costs are ¾ of a day for checking and cleaning equipment and to record the required readings. A total of 3774 pounds were recovered this period, this yields a recovery of approximately 21 pounds per day. The following are attached: (1) system data sheets, (2) emission calculations, (3) concentration/time graphs, and pounds removed graph. I. CONCUSIONS All compounds decreased in MW-1 since the last sampling event, and all remain below gross contaminant levels. The step out wells remain non-detect. Overall contaminant concentrations have been reduced significantly (formerly free product), and contaminant migration has been arrested. The potable water supply wells are clean. J. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP - Sample Duplicate RPD - Relative Percent Difference NC - Not Calculable. SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected. Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA Method 8260.
