Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: October 6, 2023 Handy Mart Project Manager: Joanna Alley, P.E. GRI Project No. 3622 i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Handy Mart is located at 3166 N.C. Highway 16 South in Maiden, Catawba County, North Carolina. The site is currently owned by Mr. Ram Singh Dass and is a former petroleum retail facility. A release was discovered in October 2010 in the area of the former kerosene dispenser. In February 2013, the 2,000- gallon kerosene UST along with the associated dispenser and piping were removed. In March 2017, three 6,000-gallon gasoline and one orphan USTs were removed from the site by the NCDOT. Currently, no USTs are active at the site. The adjoining properties are a mixture of commercial and residential properties. Twenty-one water supply wells, including two community wells, were identified within 1,000- feet from the site. A GAC unit has been installed at the residence utilizing WSW-2, which is located approximately 320 feet northeast of the site. A CAP has not yet been developed for the site. ORC socks were installed in several monitoring wells in May 2018 to reduce contaminant concentrations. On September 19, 2023, six monitoring wells and one water supply well were gauged, purged and/or sampled. MW-2R was dry and therefore not sampled. Free product was not encountered onsite. The concentration of benzene in the sample collected from MW-1R exceeded the MAC. All of the reported contaminant concentrations were below the GCLs. Based on this information, the risk classification for the site should remain high risk. The ORC socks installed in the wells were returned to the well after it was sampled. GRI recommends another round of semi-annual ground water sampling at the site to determine if contaminant concentrations continue to decrease. The next sampling event is tentatively scheduled for March 2024. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: October 6, 2023 Handy Mart Project Manager: Joanna Alley, P.E. GRI Project No. 3622 1 1.0 SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION GRI presents the results of the September 2023 ground water sampling event at the Handy Mart site; located at 3166 N.C. Highway 16 South in Maiden, Catawba County, North Carolina. A topographic map showing the general site location and the surrounding area is included as Figure 1. These activities were conducted in accordance with GRI Proposal No. 23-355, which was submitted to the NCDEQ on June 29, 2023, and was approved as Task Authorization No. 36860-36 on June 29, 2023. State correspondence is included as Appendix A. The site is currently owned by Mr. Ram Singh Dass and is a former petroleum retail facility. Please note that the building was demolished, and the land was bulldozed by the NCDOT in order to expand NC Highway 16. A release was discovered in October 2010 in the area of the kerosene dispenser. It is unknown what led to the discovery of the release; however, it is assumed to be from a property transaction. In February 2013, the 2,000-gallon kerosene UST along with the associated dispenser and piping were removed. In March 2017, three 6,000-gallon gasoline USTs were removed from the site by the NCDOT. Currently, no USTs are active at the site. UST owner/operator information and UST system information are included as Tables 1 and 2, respectively. The Registered Tank Report is shown below: The site and surrounding area are a mixture of commercial and residential properties. A copy of the Land Use table is included as Appendix B. The site is currently vacant after the NCDOT demolished the building in order to expand NC Highway 16. An unnamed tributary of the Hagen Fork River is located approximately 450 feet to the north of the site. Fourteen Type II monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW- 10 and MW-1R through MW-4R) and one Type III monitoring well (TW-1) were installed at the site during previous ground water assessment activities. Monitoring well MW-6 was abandoned prior to the NCDOT expansion project. Monitoring wells MW-1 through MW-5, MW-7 and MW-8 were either destroyed or ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: October 6, 2023 Handy Mart Project Manager: Joanna Alley, P.E. GRI Project No. 3622 2 buried during NCDOT activities. A Site Map showing the locations of the monitoring wells and the structures on-site is included as Figure 2. A receptor survey was conducted at the site by a previous consultant as part of the February 2013 Phase I LSA activities and updated by GRI on September 6, 2022. Twenty-one water supply wells, including two community wells, were identified within 1,000 feet from the site. Municipal water will be available to the site and some of the surrounding area by November 2022; however, municipal water will not be available on Cordia Circle or Olivers Cross Road and the water main running from NC Highway 16 along Providence Mill Road ends at 2380 Providence Mill Road (shortly before the intersection of Providence Mill Road and Olivers Cross Road). Water supply well WSW-2, located approximately 320 feet northeast of the site, has been sampled several times and contaminants of concern have been reported to exceed the MACs for aromatic-range hydrocarbons, even though a GAC unit has been installed at the residence that utilizes WSW-2. Receptor information is included in Table 3. Adjacent property owner information is included in Table 4. A Site Vicinity Map showing the adjacent properties and a Zoning Map showing the zoning information are included as Figures 3A and 3B, respectively. Two incidents (Incident Nos. 40713 and 40495) have been reported on two adjacent properties. Incident 40713 was closed in 2017, and incident 40495 was closed in 2022. Incident 40495 has reportedly had GCL exceedances of benzene, EDB, and 1,2-DCA in ground water samples taken onsite. Given the direction of historical ground water flow at the current site, it is believed that these two releases are comingled. It is not known which release may have caused or contributed to the hydrocarbons detected in WSW-2. Copies of the NCDEQ Incident Reports is included as Appendix C. A map showing the locations of additional incidents in the vicinity of the site is shown below: A CAP has not been submitted for the site. ORC socks were installed in September 2022 to reduce contaminant concentrations in site monitoring wells MW-1R and MW-2R. Based on this information, the site was classified as High Risk and a CSA was conducted in 2015. Based on recent contaminant concentrations at the site, the site should remain high risk until contaminant concentrations have been reduced to below the MACs. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: October 6, 2023 Handy Mart Project Manager: Joanna Alley, P.E. GRI Project No. 3622 3 2.0 PRESENTATION OF CURRENT SITE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION/ COMPARISON TO HISTORICAL ASSESSMENT INFORMATION Soil assessment was not conducted during the current scope of work. Historical soil quality information and soil excavation information is included as Appendix D. On April 3, 2023, six Type II monitoring wells (MW-1R through MW-4R, MW-9 and MW-10) and one Water Supply Well (WSW-2) were gauged, purged and/or sampled in accordance with the NCDEQ guidelines. MW-2R was dry and therefore not sampled. Free product was not observed at the site. Depths to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells ranged from 26.02 feet to 29.69 feet. Ground water elevations in the Type II monitoring wells ranged from 69.52 feet to 71.63 feet. Ground water flow was generally to the north-northeast with a horizontal gradient of approximately 0.03 feet per foot. Well construction and gauging information is included in Table 5. A Water Table Surface Map based on the Type II monitoring wells is included as Figure 4. A summary of the current ground water gauging data is shown below: Well ID Screened Interval (x to y ft. Depths of 35 feet were used to preserve the integrity of the baseline test.
