Reference: PVC LANDFILL LINER DEGRADATION Dear Mr. Musslen: It was a pleasure to talk with you yesterday, July 2, 1997, regarding the PVC liner at the Warren County PCB Landfill. As you are aware earlier this year, S&ME's Singleton Laboratory conducted a number of tests on the liner material including thickness, density and tear resistance. The results of these tests were reported in late March. I wanted to take this opportunity to go over several of the testing capabilities now available at S&ME. One such capability we spoke of yesterday was our ability to weather/age materials to see how they will respond over the course oftime. Additionally we can take a sample of liner material, weather it, and back in results to determine how the material has responded up to the present. Other testing capabilities for landfill liners include: • Moisture Content • Thickness Measurements • Density (Unit Weight) • Specific Gravity • Dimensional Stability • Seam Shear • Seam Peel • Tensile Property • Tear Resistance • Carbon Black Content • Melt Index • Hydraulic Burst Strength S&ME, lnc.-Knoxville Oronch, 1413 Topside Rood, Louisville, Tennessee 37777 (423) 970-0003 Fox (423) 970-0004 • Puncture Strength • Grab Tensile Strength • Trapezoid Tear Strength • Water Permeability • UV Weathering S&ME still has sufficient material from previous testing of the Warren County PCB Landfill liner to conduct some weather testing should you decide to do so. I am enclosing a Statement of Qualifications for S&ME's Singleton Laboratory. If you have any questions, or we can be of further assistance please contact either Don Carter in our Raleigh office or me at (423) 970-0003. Thank you for your time. Sincerely: S&ME, Inc.
