(S&ME) submits this Letter Report for the above-referenced site in accordance with S&ME’s Proposal No. 23580062, dated February 6, 2023. This work was performed at the request of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) as pre-approved under Task Authorization No. 7246-24 and signed by the Trust Fund Section of the Central Office on February 2, 2023. The scope of services included the following tasks. Measure depth to water and collect groundwater samples from monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-4 for analyses by Method 6200B. Collect a groundwater sample from the on-site water supply well for analysis for volatile organic compounds using EPA Method 6200B. Submit a letter report. Tasks were completed as proposed. Current Site Assessment Information Current Liquid Levels On March 14, 2023, S&ME measured the depth to groundwater from the top of casing in monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-4 using an electronic water level indicator. Site vicinity map and monitoring well locations can be found in Figure 1 and Figure 2. The depth-to-water measurements ranged from 11.55 feet below top of casing (ft- BTOC) in monitoring well MW-1 to 11.90 ft-BTOC in monitoring well MW-4. Compared to the previous sampling event performed during May 2021, groundwater occurrence in monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2 decreased approximately 2.5 feet in elevation. The depth to groundwater measurements and relative groundwater elevations are provided in Table 1. Groundwater Monitoring Event On March 14, 2023, after measuring the depth-to-water, S&ME personnel purged monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2, using disposable polyethylene bailers of approximately three well volumes or until dryness. Field parameters pH, specific conductivity and temperature were measured during the well purging process and Report of Limited Groundwater Assessment McLeansville Fire Department – Incident # 7246 McLeansville, Guilford County, North Carolina S&ME Project No. 1584-13-129C April 11, 2023 2 recorded on the groundwater sampling forms, which are included in Attachment I. After completing the well purging, S&ME personnel collected groundwater samples from monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-4. Following receipt of verbal permission from property owner S&ME purged and collected a water supply well sample, identified as WSW-1, from the kitchen sink located in the McLeansville Fire Department. The groundwater samples were collected in laboratory-supplied containers and stored in a cooler with ice. The groundwater samples and one trip blank sample were shipped under chain-of-custody procedures to Eurofins Environmental Testing for laboratory analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by EPA Method 6200B. The trip blank sample was analyzed by Method 6200B. Summary of Groundwater Analytical Results The laboratory analytical results of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-4 indicated that target constituents were reported at concentrations greater than their respective 2L Standards. No target petroleum-product constituents were reported at concentrations exceeding the corresponding Gross Contamination Levels (GCLs). Target petroleum-product constituents were not detected in the WSW-1 water supply well sample above the corresponding laboratory method detection limit. No detections were reported in the trip blank sample. Monitoring well and water supply well analytical results are summarized in Table 2. The analytical report is included in Attachment II. A historical summary of analytical results for groundwater samples is included in Table 3. Water Supply Wells The Fire Department’s on-site water supply well is located approximately 170 feet cross-gradient of source area monitoring well MW-1 and remains in use. The neighboring off-site Clapp water supply well is approximately 200 feet up-gradient of source area monitoring well MW-1. Table 4 provides water supply well survey information. Figure 3 depicts properties with water supply wells identified during the water well receptor survey update completed in May 2015. Municipal water is available in the immediate vicinity of the subject site. Conclusions Analytical results for the March 14, 2023, monitoring event indicate the following exceedances of the corresponding 2L Standards, which are the Corrective Action Plan established cleanup goals: Benzene, naphthalene, xylenes (total), n-propyl benzene, and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene at well MW-1. Naphthalene and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) at well MW-4. No target constituent was detected at a concentration that exceeds the corresponding GCLs. Intra-well comparisons of the March 2023 groundwater analytical results with the May 2021, analytical results suggest no significant increase or decrease in concentrations for the targeted petroleum constituents. Based on historic groundwater analytical data presented in Table 3, constituent concentrations reported since 2007 suggest either generally stable or declining concentrations over time. Job ID: 680-232076-1 Laboratory: Eurofins Savannah Narrative Job Narrative 680-232076-1 Receipt The samples were received on 3/15/2023 10:45 AM. Unless otherwise noted below, the samples arrived in good condition, and, where required, properly preserved and on ice. The temperature of the cooler at receipt time was 0.8°C GC/MS VOA Method SM6200_B: The following sample was diluted to bring the concentration of target analytes within the calibration range: MW-1 (680-232076-1). Elevated reporting limits (RLs) are provided. Method SM6200_B: The laboratory control sample (LCS) for analytical batch 680-768994 recovered outside control limits for the following analytes: Bromomethane and Chloroethane. These analytes were biased high in the LCS and were not detected in the associated samples; therefore, the data have been reported. Method SM6200_B: The laboratory control sample duplicate (LCSD) for analytical batch 680-768994 recovered outside control limits for the following analytes: Bromomethane, Chloroethane and Naphthalene. These analytes were biased high in the LCSD and were not detected in the associated samples; therefore, the data have been reported. Method SM6200_B: Ethanol was outside the control limits in the LCS/LCSD, a sample spiked at the reporting limit was run in the batch with acceptable recoveries, indicating adequate instrument performance at the low level. Data has been reported. (LCS 680-768994/4) and (LCSD 680-768994/5) Method SM6200_B: Insufficient sample volume was available to perform a matrix spike/matrix spike duplicate (MS/MSD) associated with analytical batch 680-769225. No additional analytical or quality issues were noted, other than those described above or in the Definitions/ Glossary page.
