Groundwater Monitoring Report Ken’s Quickie Mart #2 Gibsonville, Guilford County, North Carolina Progress Project 1021059.001 June 10, 2021 2 B EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Progress Environmental Group, Inc. (Progress) was contracted by Home Oil Company to conduct soil sampling and groundwater monitoring activities at the Ken’s Quickie Mart #2 located at 305 West Main Street in Gibsonville, Guilford County, North Carolina (Figure 1). On October 21, 1991, two 4,000-gallon and one 6,000-gallon gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs) were removed from the subject site by Applied Environmental Science, Inc. Approximately 800 cubic yards of soil were reportedly removed from the UST excavation and transported off-site for disposal. Historically, free product has been detected in monitoring wells DPW-1 and MW-10. The site continues to operate as a convenience store, storing gasoline for retail sale in USTs. Please note, the current USTs are not owned or operated by Home Oil Company. Progress was requested to collect and test a soil sample from the source area for risk-based analyses and to collect and test groundwater samples from select monitoring wells in an effort to reduce the site risk ranking and achieve regulatory closure. Progress collected groundwater samples from the installed monitoring wells MW-6, MW-7, MW- 9, MW-10, and MW-11 on April 27, 2021.PACE analyzed the groundwater samples for VOCs by Standard Method 6200B including ethanol, MTBE, and IPE. A summary of the groundwater analytical results is presented in Table B-4 and on Figure 4. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-6, MW-10, and MW-11 detected petroleum-related compounds that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS. The groundwater contaminant plume at the site appears to be migrating generally to the southeast. Groundwater concentrations detected in the groundwater samples collected from select on-site monitoring wells appear to have decreased significantly since the 2000 groundwater sampling event. On April 30, 2021, Progress advanced a hand auger boring (CS-1) to an approximate depth of 10 feet below land surface (bls) within the former source area in an effort to determine the current soil quality relative to the risk based cleanup levels. Laboratory analysis of soil sample SB-1 detected only sec-butylbenzene (0.0134 mg/Kg) but not at a concentration exceeding the Soil-to- Groundwater Maximum Contaminant Concentrations (MSCCs). Based on the results of the groundwater sampling event, Progress makes the following conclusions: Progress collected and analyzed groundwater samples from monitoring wells MW-6, MW- 7, MW-9, MW-10, and MW-11 as directed by the Guilford County Department of Public Health for VOCs using standard Method 6200B. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-6, MW-10, and MW-11 detected petroleum-related compounds that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS. Please note, none of the compounds detected exceeded its GCL. Only one compound was detected in a soil sample collected from the source area (CS-1 @ 10’); however, the concentration did not exceed its Soil-to-Groundwater MSCC. It appears that petroleum-related compounds detected in the groundwater samples collected from select monitoring wells have degraded sufficiently to change the risk classification for the site to Low Risk and soil contamination within the source area is not present. Groundwater Monitoring Report Ken’s Quickie Mart #2 Gibsonville, Guilford County, North Carolina Progress Project 1021059.001 June 10, 2021 3 Petroleum-related compounds previously detected in the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-6 exceeded the applicable GCLs. Based on the recent groundwater sampling results, it appears that the site is eligible for risk-based closure. Based on the results of the groundwater sampling event, Progress makes the following recommendation: Progress recommends that the site be granted a No Further Action following the filing of a Notice of Residual Petroleum (NORP) and completion of Public Notice requirements. P.O. Box 100, Mebane, NC 27302 (919) 563-3172 Unknown-2010 E PRESENTATION OF CURRENT SITE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION/COMPARISON TO HISTORICAL ASSESSMENT INFORMATION Regional Geology and Hydrogeology According to the Geologic Map of North Carolina, the subject site is located in the Carolina Slate Belt of North Carolina. The rocks beneath the site have been characterized as diabase dikes. Groundwater generally is stored in the pore space between individual grains of residual soil and in the fractures within the underlying parent rock. Due to the intense shearing associated with the thrust faulting in the area and the relatively shallow depths to bedrock, it can be expected that the fractures play a major role in the flow of groundwater in the subsurface. Recharge to the water table is primarily by precipitation infiltrating the upper soils and percolating downward, under the influence of gravity, to the groundwater table. Typically, the water table is not a level surface, but a subdued reflection of the land surface. However, the depth to the water table is Groundwater Monitoring Report Ken’s Quickie Mart #2 Gibsonville, Guilford County, North Carolina Progress Project 1021059.001 June 10, 2021 6 not constant, and depends on many factors, which include the amount of rainfall, the permeability of the soil, and the amount of groundwater being pumped in the area. Site Geology and Hydrogeology Based on our review of the topographic map and on-site observation, the site is located near the top of a northwest-southeast trending ridge. Groundwater generally flows in directions sub-parallel to the ground surface slopes and under the influence of gravity toward points of discharge such as creeks, swamps, drainage swales, or pumped groundwater wells. Based on topographic inference, groundwater beneath the site most likely flows to the east. An unnamed tributary to Back Creek is located approximately 2,000 feet to the south of the site as shown on the topographic map (Figure 1). Determination of Groundwater Flow Direction The depth to the groundwater surface in each of the monitoring wells was measured prior to well purging using a decontaminated electric sounder. The wells were surveyed previously by others using a relative benchmark. The elevations of the monitoring wells and the groundwater surface are both relative to that benchmark. The relative groundwater elevations are shown in Table B-7. Groundwater elevation data was collected during the groundwater sampling field activities. Based on information collected during previous field activities by others, the groundwater flow direction beneath the site appears to be generally to the southeast. Progress collected water level measurements relative to the top of casings of the monitoring wells. A groundwater flow map is included as Figure 3. Soil and Groundwater Sampling Activities Progress was requested to collect and test a soil sample from the source area for risk-based analyses and to collect and test groundwater samples from select monitoring wells in an effort to reduce the site risk ranking and achieve regulatory closure. Progress collected groundwater samples from the installed monitoring wells MW-6, MW-7, MW-9, MW-10, and MW-11 on April 27, 2021.Prior to sampling, the depth-to-groundwater from the top of each well casing was measured in the monitoring wells using an electric water level and oil/water interface indicator. The meter was decontaminated between uses according to the following procedure: washed with potable water and phosphate-free detergent solution; rinsed with potable water; and rinsed with distilled water. The monitoring wells were purged by bailing an equivalent of three volumes of water from the wells using a one-liter capacity disposable polypropylene bailer. The monitoring wells were then sampled using the dedicated, disposable bailer for each well. On April 30, 2021, Progress advanced a hand auger boring (CS-1) to an approximate depth of 10 feet below land surface (bls) within the former source area in an effort to determine the current soil quality relative to the risk based cleanup levels. The soil and groundwater samples were packed/decanted into laboratory-supplied bottles and placed into a cooler packed with ice. The cooler was delivered under chain-of-custody to Pace Groundwater Monitoring Report Ken’s Quickie Mart #2 Gibsonville, Guilford County, North Carolina Progress Project 1021059.001 June 10, 2021 7 Analytical Services, LLC (PACE) in Kernersville, North Carolina for analysis. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP - Sample Duplicate RPD - Relative Percent Difference NC - Not Calculable. SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected. Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA Method 8260. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for each analyte is a combined concentration. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes. TNI - The NELAC Institute. ANALYTE QUALIFIERS Matrix spike recovery exceeded QC limits.
