EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This Site Check Report presents a summary of assessment activities conducted at the site by
ATC, on May 12, 2023, following the installation of groundwater monitoring well MW-4. A
discussion of the Site Check activities and the results of soil sampling and groundwater is provided
within subsequent sections of this report. The Circle K No. 2723974 facility is located at 2106
North Chester Street in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina (“site” or “subject facility”). A
site vicinity map with topographic features is included as Figure 1.
ATC was contracted by Circle K in April 2023 to conduct a Site Check at Circle K #2723974
in response to the spill bucket for The Unleaded UST failing hydrostatic testing.
ATC mobilized to the site on May 12, 2023, for the installation of soil boring and monitoring
well MW-4 and subsequent groundwater sampling, respectively. While installing the
monitoring well, soil samples were collected 15-20 feet and 20-25 and submitted for
analysis.
Benzene and naphthalene were detected above their respective soil to groundwater
MSCCs in the soil sample obtained from 15-20 feet bgs. Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons -
DRO were detected in the same sample at a concentration of 9800 Mg/Kg, exceeding the
NCDEQ action levels. However, this soil sample was obtained above the water table.
The groundwater sample from monitoring well MW-4 contained benzene at a
concentration above the 2L Standards but below the GCL.
Based on the information obtained from the receptor survey dated August 2020 and petroleum
constituents detected below the GCLs, ATC recommends no further action at this time and the
closure of this incident with a Notice of Residual Petroleum.

2.4 Past Releases
The following historical information was obtained from a “Phase I Environmental Site
Assessment Report” (“Phase I ESA”) completed by SEI dated January 2007.
A past incident No. 27643 associated with the former UST system was initially discovered
during due diligence activities conducted in November of 2003. The Phase I ESA
completed by SEI in January 2007 concluded the site posed a “Low” risk. Following
subsequent investigation activities, the incident received closure through recordation of a
Notice of Residual Petroleum (“NORP”) from NCDEQ. The site gained No further Action
(“NFA”) status on August 29, 2005.
In March 2017, a diesel dispenser and associated piping was removed as a part of an
expansion project by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). ATC
conducted the “Line Closure Assessment” for Circle K.
In April 2020, ATC was contracted to conduct a diesel and gasoline line closure
assessment associated with the removal of six fuel dispensers (two gasoline/diesel
dispensers and four gasoline only dispensers) and the associated product line piping. The
fuel dispensers and associated product line piping were removed after leaks were
detected beneath two fuel dispensers, incident No. 47077. The services were provided in
general accordance with a proposal dated April 2, 2020, as approved by Circle K.
Site Check Report
Circle K No. 2723974
Gastonia, North Carolina
Page No. 8
On April 20-22, 2020, ATC mobilized to the site for the collection of 23 soil samples from
beneath the former fuel dispensers and associated product line piping. Review of
laboratory analytical data indicates soils located beneath the fuel system were found to be
either below laboratory detection limits for total petroleum hydrocarbons (“TPH”), diesel
range organics (“DRO”) or contained TPH, gasoline range organics (“GRO”) below the
NCDEQ agency action limit of 50-milligrams per kilogram (“mg/kg”); except, for to the SS-
9 sample location.
TPH-DRO was detected at five locations over laboratory detection limits at concentrations
of 7.2-mg/kg (SS-16), 8.0-mg/kg (SS-23), 15.0-mg/kg (SS-15), 16.8-mg/kg (SS-20) and
166-mg/kg (SS-9), all of which are well below the current NCDEQ action level of 100-
mg/kg; except for the sample collected from SS-9 boring location. Remaining soil samples
for TPH-DRO/GRO were found to be either below their respective laboratory detection
limit or laboratory reporting limit. Based on the results of the Line Closure Assessment,
ATC recommended a Limited Site Assessment in the vicinity of the SS-9 sample location.
On July 6, 2020, ATC supervised installation of groundwater monitoring well MW-2.
Continuous soil samples were collected during well installation with macro core sample
tubes until moist to wet soil was encountered at a depth of 20 to 25 feet below ground
surface (ft. bgs). Soils from the macro cores were characterized for lithology and screened
with a photo-ionization detector (PID). Based on the observed moisture, the groundwater
table appeared to be approximately 20 to 25 ft. bgs. Soil samples were collected at depths
of 10, 15, and 20 ft. bgs, from the macro-core sleeve, for laboratory analysis. Based on
the laboratory report, petroleum constituents analyzed via EPA Method 8260 were not
detected above the laboratory method detection limit. Volatile petroleum hydrocarbons
were detected at an estimated concentration for the C05-C08 range of aliphatics in all
three soil samples. None of the detections exceed the Soil to Groundwater MSCC.
On July 16, 2020, ATC mobilized to the site to gauge and sample monitoring MW-2.
Groundwater analytical results indicated the following: Benzene and lead exceeded their
respective 2L Standards in the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-2;
Multiple VOC and VPH compounds were detected at concentrations below their 2L
Standards; None of the detected petroleum constituents exceeded their GCLs.
As part of the LSA water supply well forms were sent via certified mail to 23 owners within
500 feet of the site as identified by the Gaston County GIS website. ATC subsequently
conducted a visual site reconnaissance within a 1,500-foot radius of the site to identify the
existence of water supply wells or other potential receptors in the area. Based on
information obtained from the receptor survey, ATC did not identify potential water supply
wells.
The North Carolina DEQ issued a Notice of No Further Action for Incident Number 47077
on March 22, 2021.

2.5 Current Facility Status
The facility is currently utilized as a convenience store and gas station. Structures
observed onsite were a one-story convenience store, car wash, fuel canopy with six fuel
dispensers and the associated parking areas.
2.6 Subject Site and surrounding Property Use
At the time of this assessment, the facility was being utilized for commercial purposes with
surrounding properties to the north and west being commercial properties and N. Chester
Street. Properties to the south are occupied by interstate I-85 and vacant, wooded land
occupied properties to the east.
2.7 Site Geology and Hydrogeology
According to the 1985 “Geologic Map of North Carolina”, the site is located in the Kings
Mountain Belt of the Inner Piedmont Physiographic Province. Subsurface lithology in this
region consists of metamorphosed quartz diorite characterized as foliated to massive.
Soils encountered during sampling activities consisted of a silt-clay mixture from grade to
approximately 4-feet below ground surface.

3.0 Receptor Survey Information
3.1 Water Supply Wells
During Limited Site Assessment activities completed during September 2020, water
supply well forms were sent via certified mail to 23 owners within 500 feet of the site as
identified by the Gaston County GIS website. ATC subsequently conducted a visual site
reconnaissance within a 1,500-foot radius of the site to identify the existence of water
supply wells or other potential receptors in the area. Return receipts for all forms were
received indicating successful delivery. Based on information obtained from the receptor
survey, ATC did not identify potential water supply wells. Receptor information from the
previous report is summarized in Table B5.
3.2 Public Water Supply
Municipal water is generally supplied to the site and surrounding area by the City of
Gastonia/Two Rivers Utilities Water and Wastewater services. According to City of
Gastonia Water/Two Rivers Utilities Water & Wastewater personnel, all of the properties
within 500 feet of the site have access to the municipally supplied water and wastewater
system. The City’s water source is the Catawba River, which is not located within 1,500
feet of the site.
3.3 Surface Water
ATC reviewed a USGS 7.5-Minute Gastonia North Quadrangle Topographic Map, dated
2019 (Figure 1) to identify surface water bodies in the site vicinity. In addition, ATC
conducted a visual reconnaissance for surface water bodies in the area. A tributary to
Long Creek is located approximately 1,000 feet east of the site.
3.4 Subsurface Structures
Prior to drilling activities, ATC contacted One-Call of North Carolina and subcontracted a
private utility designating company to locate underground utilities at the site. Underground
utilities (electric, communications, water) were located on-site prior to conducting
subsurface work. ATC does not expect that the utilities would intersect the water table at
the site based on the measured depth to water in well MW-4.
3.5 Land Use
The subject site is located in Gaston County, North Carolina. The site is accessible from
NC 321 Highway to the west. The site contains a one-story convenience store, car wash,
fuel canopy with six fuel dispensers and the associated parking areas. Surface cover at
the site is primarily asphalt pavement with concrete pavement beneath the canopy around
the fuel dispensers. A small amount of grass and landscaped areas occupy the rest of the
property. The adjoining property to the south is undergoing construction for an off-ramp
from Interstate 85. Properties within 1,500 feet of the site are generally commercial with

vacant, undeveloped land to the east. A few industrial properties are located in the areas
farther west.
4.0 MONITORING WELL INSTALLATION AND SOIL SAMPLING
ATC completed the limited site check activities on May 12, 2023. ATC contracted with Integrated
Scanning Solutions, Inc. (ISS), on March 12, 2023, to identify underground utilities present in the
vicinity of the faulty Spill Bucket. ISS identified and marked applicable underground utilities in the
vicinity of the Spill bucket utilizing ground penetrating radar and electrical resistance trace
techniques.
On ATC was on site with contracted Environmental Drilling & Probing Services LLC (EDPS), a
North Carolina certified driller, to complete one soil boring and install a Type II groundwater
monitoring well on May 12, 2023. The soil boring was installed utilizing a Geoprobe 7822DT drill
rig with direct push technology, placed as close-as-reasonably possible to the subject dispenser
as indicated on Figure 2. The soil boring was installed to a depth of approximately 34 feet below
ground surface (ft-bgs). Native soil was observed to consist primarily of silt. Moist soils were
observed at approximately 23 ft-bgs.
Soil samples were at approximate five-foot intervals. A portion of each sample was placed into a
sealable air-tight bag and allowed time to volatilize at ambient temperature prior to being screened
in-field for the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using a photo-ionization detector
(PID) calibrated to 100-parts per million (ppm) Isobutylene. Soil samples were collected for PID
screening at approximate five foot the intervals between the ground surface and 25- ft-bgs. The
soil samples with the highest PID readings were selected for analysis (15-20 feet and 20-25 feet
below ground surface).
The soil samples associated with the unleaded gasoline spill bucket were analyzed for Total
Petroleum Hydrocarbons-Diesel Range Organics (TPH-DRO) Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons-
Gasoline Range Organics (TPH-GRO) by EPA Method 8015, Volatile Organic Compounds
(VOCs) by EPA Method 8260D, and semi-volatile compounds (SVOCs) by Method 8270. The
samples were placed in laboratory-provided bottle wear, placed on ice, and transported under
chain-of-custody protocol, to Pace Analytical Services, LLC (Pace), a North Carolina certified
laboratory, located in Huntersville, North Carolina. The soil sample analytical results are
summarized in Table 3.
The soil boring was converted to a Type II groundwater monitoring well. Monitoring well MW-4
was installed utilizing a GeoProbe 7822DT drill rig with 4.25-inch inner-diameter hollow-stem
augers, to a depth of 34 ft-bgs. The well was constructed of 2-inch diameter schedule-40 polyvinyl
chloride (PVC) riser with 20-feet of 0.010-inch slotted screen and solid riser to near ground
surface. The borehole annulus was filled with #2 sand filter pack to 2 feet above the top of the
well screen. Bentonite was placed from 1 to 2 ft-bgs above the sand pack, and grout to surface.
The well was completed at the ground surface with a flush-mounted traffic-bearing manhole set
in a concrete pad. Table 7 contains the monitoring well construction details. The soil boring log
and driller’s well construction record for monitoring well MW-4 is included in Appendix A.

5.0 SOIL ANALYTICAL RESULTS
Based on the laboratory report, petroleum constituents analyzed for VOCs using EPA Method
8260 benzene and naphthalene were detected above their respective soil to groundwater MSCCs
in the soil sample obtained from 15-20 feet bgs. Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons - DRO were
detected in the same sample at a concentration of 9800 Mg/Kg, exceeding the NCDEQ action
levels.
Soil analytical results are provided in Table B3. A copy of the laboratory analytical report is
included in Appendix B.
6.0 GROUNDWATER CHARACTERIZATION
6.1 Groundwater Levels
Subsequent to MW-4 installation and development, ATC gauged and sampled the well. A
site map showing the well location is presented as Figure 2. A water-level indicator was
used to measure the depth to groundwater from the top-of-casing (TOC). Groundwater
stabilized at a depth of 23.11 feet below TOC. Table B7 summarizes monitoring well
construction and depth to water data.
6.2 Groundwater Quality
On May 12, 2023, a groundwater sample was collected from monitoring well MW-4. A
three-volume well purge was implemented prior to groundwater sample collection to
ensure a representative sample was collected. The water sample was collected in
laboratory-supplied, preserved containers; entered into chain-of-custody control; placed
on ice; and delivered to North Carolina-accredited Pace Analytical Laboratories in
Huntersville, North Carolina. The groundwater sample was analyzed for VOCs by EPA
Method 6200B, and MADEP VPH.
The groundwater analytical results were compared to 2L Standards and GCLs.
Groundwater analytical results indicated the following:
Benzene exceeded its 2L Standard in the groundwater sample collected from
monitoring well MW-4;
Multiple VOCs were detected at concentrations below their 2L Standards;
None of the detected petroleum constituents exceeded their GCLs.
Groundwater analytical results from the May 2023 monitoring event are summarized in
Table B7. The analytical report is included as Appendix B.
As part of ATC’s quality assurance and quality control (QA and QC) measures, a data
review of the laboratory report was conducted. During the review, it was found that the
samples were received from the laboratory in acceptable condition and properly

preserved. The chain-of-custody was otherwise properly completed by all parties. The
samples were analyzed within correct holding times and reported within the lab report.
7.0 Conclusions and Recommendations
On behalf of the Trust Fund Branch of the UST Section, ATC has completed a site check including
groundwater monitoring well installation, soil and groundwater and sampling activities for the
Circle K Store No. 2723974, located at 2106 N. Chester Street, in Gastonia, Gaston County, North
Carolina. Results indicate the following:

DEFINITIONS
DF - Dilution Factor, if reported, represents the factor applied to the reported data due to dilution of the sample aliquot.
ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit.
TNTC - Too Numerous To Count
J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit.
MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit.
PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit.
RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and
bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix.
S - Surrogate
1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is
a combined concentration.
Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values.
LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate)
MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate)
DUP - Sample Duplicate
RPD - Relative Percent Difference
NC - Not Calculable.
SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up
U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected.
Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether.
A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA
Method 8260.
N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for
each analyte is a combined concentration.
Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as
"Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters.
Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes.
TNI - The NELAC Institute.
ANALYTE QUALIFIERS

This analyte exceeded secondary source verification criteria high for the initial calibration. The reported results should be
considered an estimated value.IH
Analyte recovery in the laboratory control sample (LCS) was above QC limits. Results for this analyte in associated
samples may be biased high.L1
Analyte recovery in the laboratory control sample (LCS) was below QC limits. Results for this analyte in associated
samples may be biased low.L2
Matrix spike recovery and/or matrix spike duplicate recovery was outside laboratory control limits.M0
Matrix spike recovery exceeded QC limits. Batch accepted based on laboratory control sample (LCS) recovery.M1
The lab does not hold NELAC/TNI accreditation for this parameter but other accreditations/certifications may apply. A
complete list of accreditations/certifications is available upon request.N2
The EPA or method required sample preservation degrades this compound, therefore acceptable recoveries may not be
achieved in sample matrix spikes.P5
The continuing calibration verification was above the method acceptance limit. Any detection for the analyte in the
associated samples may have a high bias.v1
