On June 1, 2023, Harmon Environmental, P A on behalf of Gold Mine 66 submitted a letter to the NCDEQ requesting an extension to the 2023 sampling event. On June 5, 2023, Mr. Brad Newton, P.G. of the NCDEQ granted an extension to July 15, 2023. To comply with the May 16,2022 letter, prior to initiating these activities, on June 2, 2023, Harmon Environmental, PA requested trust fund pre-approval to complete the requested task. On June 7, 2023, Harmon Environmental, PA received pre-approval under Task Authorization 27 for conducting these services. Figure 1 presents the location ofthe Gold Mine 66 site on an excerpt from a United States Geologic Survey (USGS), 7.5-minute topographic series map of the region. On June 14,2023, Harmon Environmental, PA personnel collected groundwater samples from the five monitor wells (MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, MW-6D and MW-7) and the water supply well located at 5936 Sherrills Ford Road. These groundwater samples were collected in general accordance with NCDEQ accepted sampling protocols. As collected, each ofthe groundwater samples were placed in a cooler on ice pending delivery to Waypoint Analytical, LLC for analyses. Chain-of- Custody protocol was maintained throughout the sample shipping process. Upon receipt, Waypoint analyzed the samples for volatile organic compounds by EPA Standard Method 6200B extended to include methyl tert butyl ether, isopropyl ether, and ethylene dibromide. Prior to collecting the groundwater samples, the water level was measured relative to the top of the well casing using an electronic water level indicator. The water levels and calculated groundwater elevations, based on an arbitrary on-site datum, are presented in Table 1. Figure 3 presents a water table potentiometric map generated based on the calculated groundwater elevations associated with the June 14, 2023 groundwater measurements. As indicated by this map, the horizontal component of shallow groundwater flow in the vicinity of the former underground storage tanks is generally toward the northeast-northeast with a calculated horizontal gradient of approximately 0.01 feet per foot (ft/ft). Laboratory equipment failure caused holding time issues with some of the samples. On July 5, 2023 , Harmon Environmental, PA contacted Mr. Brad Newton, P.G. of the NCDEQ via telephone and left a voice mail message explaining the issue. Harmon Environmental, P A offered to resample should the NCDEQ desire. On July 5, 2023, Mr. Newton advised Harmon Environmental, P A via email to proceed with the report preparation and submission without resampling. June 14. 202 3 Groundwa!er Sampling Even! Goldmine 66 5949 Sherrills Ford Rd., Calmvba, North Carolina July 12, 2023 Harmon Environmental, PA 615 Bruce Thomas Road Monroe, North Carolina www. harmonenvironmental. com The analytical results associated with the June 14, 2023 sampling event are summarized on Table 3 and Figure 4. These results are also presented with the historical data associated with groundwater samples collected from the monitor well network on Tables 4 through 11 . 2. 0 Conclusions and Recommendations The analytical results associated with the June 14, 2023 groundwater sampling event indicated benzene, 1,1 ,2-trichloroethane, 1 ,2-trichloroethene, naphthalene and me thy 1 tert butyl ether were present in concentrations exceeding the North Carolina Groundwater Quality Standard as established in North Carolina Administrative Code, Title 15A, Subchapter 2L (15A NCAC 2L). Benzene was detected in the sample collected from monitor well MW -2 at a concentration of 6.67 micrograms per liter (f!g/L). The Groundwater Quality Standard for benzene established in North Carolina Administrative Code, Title 15A, Subchapter 2L is 1 f!g/L. 1,1 ,2-trichloroethane was detected in the sample collected from monitor well MW-2 at a concentration of 1.93 f!g/L. The Groundwater Quality Standard for 1,1 ,2-trichlroethane is 0.6 f!g/L. 1 ,2-dichloroethane was detected at concentrations of 1.19 f!g/L, 79.6 f!g/L and 3.41 f!g/L in the samples collected from monitor wells MW-1 , MW-2 and MW-6D, respectively. The Groundwater Quality Standard for 1 ,2-dichloroethane is 0.4 f!g/L. Naphthalene was detected in the June 14, 2023 sample from monitor well MW-2 at a concentration of 95.4 f!g/L. The Groundwater Quality Standard for naphthalene is 6 f!g/L. Methyl tert butyl ether was detected in the samples collected from monitor wells MW-1, MW-2 and MW-6D at concentrations of 60.7 f!g/L, 96.7 f!g/L and 56.5 f!g/L, respectively. The Groundwater Quality Standard for Methyl tert butyl ether is 20 f!g/L. The analytical results associated with the April 26, 2022 sample collected from an outside faucet at 5936 Sherrills Ford Road indicated the presence of chloroform at 3.59 f!g/L. The Groundwater Quality Standard for chloroform is 70 f!g/L. It should be noted that the 5936 Sherrills Ford sample exceeded the hold time due to laboratory equipment failure. Based on a review of the recent data and historical analytical data associated with the site, Harmon Environmental, P A recommends the DENR consider continuing the annually routine monitoring at this site. Based on the historic analytical data and the well construction information, Harmon Environmental, P A recommends the mmual groundwater sampling event be limited to monitor wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-6D and MW-7 and the water supply well at 5936 Sherrills Ford Road. Monroe, NC, 28112 Ref: Analytical Testing Lab Report Number: 23-166-0032 Client Project Description: Goldmime 66 Dear Rick Harmon: Waypoint Analytical, LLC (Charlotte) received sample(s) on 6/15/2023 for the analyses presented in the following report. The above referenced project has been analyzed per your instructions. The analyses were performed in accordance with the applicable analytical method. The analytical data has been validated using standard quality control measures performed as required by the analytical method. Quality Assurance, method validations, instrumentation maintenance and calibration for all parameters were performed in accordance with guidelines established by the USEPA (including 40 CFR 136 Method Update Rule May 2021) unless otherwise indicated. Certain parameters (chlorine, pH, dissolved oxygen, sulfite...) are required to be analyzed within 15 minutes of sampling. Usually, but not always, any field parameter analyzed at the laboratory is outside of this holding time. Refer to sample analysis time for confirmation of holding time compliance. The results are shown on the attached Report of Analysis(s). Results for solid matrices are reported on an as-received basis unless otherwise indicated. This report shall not be reproduced except in full and relates only to the samples included in this report. Please do not hesitate to contact me or client services if you have any questions or need additional information.
