(Progress) was contracted by Quality Oil Company, LLC to prepare the Groundwater Monitoring Report for the Mountain View Gas House located at 3162 NC Highway 127, SE in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. In an effort to reduce the residual dissolved phase groundwater contamination beneath the site, Progress previously applied four kilograms (Kg) of Enviro-BAC powder product (one Kg placed into each of the four proposed injection wells). Progress was on-site to collect groundwater samples from the on-site monitoring wells MW-1, MW-1A, MW-2, MW-4, and MW-5 and recovery wells RW-1 and RW-2, on May 3, 2023. Based on the strong petroleum sheen, Progress did not collect a groundwater sample from monitoring well MW-1A. Pace Analytical Services, LLC (Pace) analyzed the groundwater samples for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by Standard Method 6200B including ethanol, MTBE, and IPE. Targeted petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in the groundwater samples collected from monitoring well MW-4 and MW-5 at concentrations below their respective NC2LGWQS. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2, and recovery wells RW-1 and RW-2 detected petroleum-related compounds that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS. Based on the results of the groundwater sampling event, Progress makes the following conclusions:  On May 3, 2023, Progress collected and analyzed groundwater samples from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-4, and MW-5 and recovery wells RW-1 and RW-2 for VOCs using Standard Method 6200B.  Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2 and recovery wells RW-1 and RW-2 detected targeted petroleum-related compounds at concentrations above their respective NC2LGWQS.  Groundwater data collected from monitoring and recovery wells MW-1 and RW-2 generally exhibited petroleum concentration reductions since the injection of the Enviro-BAC.  The groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-1 exhibited a benzene reduction of 98% and a Total BTEX reduction of 95% since the most recent sampling event prior to the injection of the Enviro-BAC.  The groundwater sample collected from monitoring well RW-2 exhibited a benzene reduction of 95% and a Total BTEX reduction of 88% since the most recent sampling event prior to the injection of the Enviro-BAC. Groundwater Monitoring Report Mountain View Gas House Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina Progress Project QUA402N.GW May 24, 2023 3  Progress collected and tested groundwater samples from two off-site water- supply wells. The results of the analytical testing indicated the presence of chloroform in the groundwater sample collected from water-supply well PW-1 at a concentration that does not exceed its NC2LGWQS. Based on the results of the groundwater sampling event, Progress makes the following recommendations:  Based on review of the analytical results, it appears that the detected concentrations in the groundwater samples collected from on-site monitoring wells have generally decreased in the groundwater samples collected from those wells that have been treated with Enviro-BAC. It appears that aquifer conditions are supportive of bioremedial activity. Because the contaminant plume appears to be stable and generally confined to an area proximal to the USTs and detected concentrations are generally deceasing, Progress recommends utilizing statistical modeling to demonstrate that the site can be considered for regulatory closure. (Progress) was contracted by Quality Oil Company, LLC to prepare the Groundwater Monitoring Report for the Mountain View Gas House located at 3162 NC Highway 127, SE in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. This report documents the results of the groundwater sampling event conducted on May 3, 2023. The site location is depicted on Figure 1. A Site Map is included as Figure 2. The site consists of an active convenience store which stores petroleum products in underground storage tanks (USTs) and an aboveground storage tank (AST) for retail sale. The site is located in a commercial and residential area of Hickory. A documented release occurred from the previous UST system in 1998. An additional release from the current system was documented and repaired in 2015. The site remains a High Risk due to the presence of active water-supply wells in the vicinity. Information regarding the on-site USTs and AST is presented below: Table 1 Site History, UST/AST System Information Tank No. Installation Date Removal Date Capacity (gallons) Construction Materials Contents Previous Contents 1 1980 1998 8,000 Single Wall Steel Gasoline Gasoline 2 1980 1998 8,000 Single Wall Steel Gasoline Gasoline 3 1980 1998 8,000 Single Wall Steel Gasoline Gasoline 4 1980 1998 8,000 Single Wall Steel Gasoline Gasoline 5 1998 Current 12,000 Single Wall Fiberglass Gasoline Gasoline 6 1998 Current 8,000 Single Wall Fiberglass Gasoline Gasoline 7 1998 Current 8,000 Single Wall Fiberglass Diesel Diesel 8 AST Current 500 Double Wall Steel Kerosene Kerosene Table 2 Site History, UST Owner/Operator Information Owner’s Name Address Phone Number Dates of Ownership Quality Oil Company, LLC P.O. The rocks beneath the site have been characterized as amphibolite and biotite gneiss. Groundwater generally is stored in the pore space between individual grains of residual soil and in the fractures within the underlying parent rock. Due to the intense shearing associated with the thrust faulting in the area and the relatively shallow depths to bedrock, it can be expected that the fractures play a major role in the flow of groundwater in the subsurface. Recharge to the water table is primarily by precipitation infiltrating the upper soils and percolating downward, under the influence of gravity, to the groundwater table. Typically, the water table is not a level surface, but a subdued reflection of the land surface. However, the depth to the water table is not constant, and depends on many factors, which include the amount of rainfall, the permeability of the soil, and the amount of groundwater being pumped in the area. Site Geology and Hydrogeology Based on our review of the topographic map and on-site observation, the site is located near the top of a northeast-southwest trending ridge. Groundwater generally flows in directions sub-parallel to the ground surface slopes and under the influence of gravity toward points of discharge such as creeks, swamps, drainage swales, or pumped groundwater wells. Based on topographic inference, groundwater beneath the site most likely flows to the east-southeast. An unnamed tributary to Hop Creek is located approximately 1,700 feet toward the southeast as shown on the topographic map (Figure 1). Groundwater Flow The depth to the groundwater surface in select monitoring and recovery wells was measured prior to the well purging using a decontaminated electric sounder. The tops of casing of the wells were previously surveyed relative to a benchmark by others. The relative groundwater elevations are shown in Table B-7. Groundwater elevations are depicted on Figure 3. Based on information collected during the most recent sampling event, the groundwater flow direction appears to be generally to the east beneath the site. Groundwater Monitoring Report Mountain View Gas House Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina Progress Project QUA402N.GW May 24, 2023 7 Groundwater Sampling Activities In an effort to reduce the residual dissolved phase groundwater contamination beneath the site, Progress previously implemented an injection strategy at the site. Specifically, Progress injected Enviro-BAC, a proprietary bioremedial product, within the contaminant plume at the site. Prior to injection activities Progress prepared and submitted a Notice of Intent to the Division of Water Resources-Underground Injection Control (UIC) Program. On February 22, 2019, Progress applied four kilograms (Kg) of Enviro-BAC powder product (one Kg placed into each of the four proposed injection wells). Progress placed one kilogram of Enviro-BAC mixed in approximately five gallons of fresh water into four monitoring wells that have historically exhibited elevated concentrations of targeted petroleum hydrocarbons (MW-1, MW-1A, RW-1, and RW- 2). Progress was on-site to collect groundwater samples from the on-site monitoring wells MW-1, MW-1A, MW-2, MW-4, and MW-5 and recovery wells RW-1 and RW-2, on May 3, 2023. Prior to sampling the monitoring wells, the depth-to-groundwater from the top of each well casing was measured in the monitoring wells using an electric water level and oil/water interface indicator. The meter was decontaminated between uses according to the following procedure:  washed with potable water and phosphate-free detergent solution;  rinsed with potable water; and  rinsed with distilled water. The monitoring and recovery wells were purged by bailing an equivalent of three volumes of water from the wells using a one-liter capacity disposable polypropylene bailer. The wells were then sampled using a dedicated, disposable bailer for each well. The groundwater samples were decanted into laboratory-prepared containers. The sample containers were appropriately labeled and delivered to Pace Analytical Laboratories (Pace) in Kernersville, North Carolina for analysis. Laboratory Analytical Results Pace analyzed the groundwater samples for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by Standard Method 6200B including ethanol, MTBE, and IPE. A summary of the groundwater analytical results is presented in Table B-4 and on Figure 4. Based on the strong petroleum sheen, Progress did not collect a groundwater sample from monitoring well MW-1A. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-4 and MW-5 did not exhibit targeted compounds at concentrations that exceed their respective North Carolina 2L Groundwater Quality Standards (NC2LGWQS). Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-1 detected benzene (16.5 µg/L), naphthalene (93.1 µg/L), n-propylbenzene (135 Groundwater Monitoring Report Mountain View Gas House Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina Progress Project QUA402N.GW May 24, 2023 8 µg/L), 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (972 µg/L), and total xylenes (508.9 µg/L) at concentrations that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-2 detected benzene (20.9 µg/L) and naphthalene (32.6 µg/L) at concentrations that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from recovery well RW-1 detected benzene (1.4 µg/L) at a concentration that exceeds its NC2LGWQS. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from recovery well RW-2 detected benzene (21.1 µg/L), naphthalene (67.9 µg/L), and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (491 µg/L) at concentrations that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS. F FREE PRODUCT REMOVAL Free product was not measured in the monitoring wells installed in the source area of the plume. Previous operation of the remediation system appears to have effectively removed residual free product beneath the site. G MONITORED NATURAL ATTENUATION/NATURAL SOURCE ZONE DEPLETION STATUS Progress collected groundwater samples from the monitoring and recovery wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-4, MW-5, RW-1, RW-2, and water-supply wells PW-1 and PW-3 on May 3, 2023. Pace analyzed the groundwater samples for VOCs by Standard Method 6200B including ethanol, MTBE, and IPE. A summary of the groundwater analytical results is presented in Table B-4 and on Figure 4. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring wells MW- 4 and MW-5 detected petroleum-related compounds at concentrations below their respective NC2LGWQS. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2 and recovery wells RW-1 and RW-2 detected petroleum-related compounds that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from water-supply wells PW-1 and PW-3 did not detect targeted compounds above the laboratory detection limit, with the exception of chloroform in the groundwater sample collected from water-supply well PW-1. Please note, the concentration of chloroform is well below its NC2LGWQS. Historically, free product has been measured in monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-1A. Free product has not been detected at the site during the most recent groundwater Groundwater Monitoring Report Mountain View Gas House Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina Progress Project QUA402N.GW May 24, 2023 9 sampling events. The groundwater contaminant plume appears to be migrating to the east beneath the site. The size and orientation of the groundwater plume appears to be unchanged since the most recent sampling events. However, based on limited sampling, the current extent of the groundwater plume is inferred from both current and historical sampling results. Groundwater concentrations detected in the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells within the plume appear to be generally decreasing since the implementation of bioremedial groundwater remediation activities. Table B-4A depicts the effectiveness of the injection of Enviro-BAC into monitoring wells MW-1, MW-1A and RW-2. H CONCLUSIONS Based on the results of the groundwater sampling event, Progress makes the following conclusions:  On May 3, 2023, Progress collected and analyzed groundwater samples from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-4, and MW-5 and recovery wells RW-1 and RW-2 for VOCs using Standard Method 6200B.  Progress collected and tested groundwater samples from two off-site water- supply wells. The results of the analytical testing indicated the presence of chloroform in the groundwater sample collected from water-supply well PW-1 at a concentration that does not exceed its NC2LGWQS. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP - Sample Duplicate RPD - Relative Percent Difference NC - Not Calculable. SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected. Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA Method 8260. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for each analyte is a combined concentration. Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as "Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited.
