Services were authorized by the North Carolina Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Task Authorization (TA) #05, accepted April 19, 2023, and Contract Number N122019D. The approved scope of services for this Task Authorization included: • Sample water supply well WSW-9; • Analyze the groundwater sample from WSW-9 per Standard Method (SM) 6200B [plus ethylene dibromide (EDB), methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), and diisopropyl ether (DIPE)]; and • Prepare a letter report documenting the findings. The Former Kwik Shop site is located at 3625 Cumberland Road, Fayetteville, Cumberland County, NC. (See Figures in Attachment A). CATLIN conducted field activities on May 4, 2023, in accordance with the approved TA. Potential hazards were evaluated before beginning fieldwork and documented on an electronic Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) form, provided in Attachment B. Photographs of the site activities are included in Attachment C. Water Supply Well Sampling Water supply well WSW-9 was sampled in accordance with NCDEQ Guidelines and EPA Region 4 Operating Procedures. Prior to obtaining a representative groundwater sample, the well NCDEQ; Kwik Shop WSW Letter Report CATLIN Engineers and Scientists CATLIN Project No. 220275 July 2023 July 5, 2023 Page 2 of 2 was purged by running the tap (located on the front of the well house) for fifteen minutes. Information was entered into a field data sheet, a copy of which is included in Attachment B. After the well was purged, a groundwater sample was collected from the spigot directly into laboratory-provided, pre-preserved glassware, labeled, and placed on ice in an insulated cooler. A laboratory-provided trip blank was maintained in the cooler for the duration of the sampling event. Samples were submitted to Con-Test Analytical Laboratory (Certification NC 652 and NC-DW 25703) in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, under proper chain of custody (COC) protocol and analyzed per SM 6200B. Groundwater Sample Results Based on the results of the SM 6200B laboratory analysis, the sample from WSW-9 contained estimated (“J”-flag) concentrations of acetone (a known laboratory artifact) and also the target analyte 2-butanone. These detections were well below their respective 2L GWQS and no additional analytes were detected. Trip Blank Sample Results Based on the results of the SM 6200B laboratory analysis, no targeted analytes were detected in the trip blank sample. The results of the WSW-9 analysis (and a summary of the water supply wells sampled under TA04 and TA05) are summarized in Table 1 (presented in Attachment D) and the laboratory analytical report and COC document are included in Attachment E. Recommendations CATLIN recommends conducting semi-annual groundwater sampling and consider deploying passive remediation devices in monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2D or conducting contaminant fate and transport modeling activities. CATLIN Engineers and Scientists will proceed upon notification of your approval. Should you have any questions or require additional information, please contact us at (910) 452-5861. Wide recovery limits established for difficult compound. Wide RPD limits established for difficult compound. #Data exceeded client recommended or regulatory level Percent recoveries and relative percent differences (RPDs) are determined by the software using values in the calculation which have not been rounded. No results have been blank subtracted unless specified in the case narrative section. FLAG/QUALIFIER SUMMARY Detected but below the Reporting Limit (lowest calibration standard); therefore, result is an estimated concentration (CLP J-Flag).
