(WR), in association with TA-01 for the site, completed the following approved Scopes of Services: • TA-01: o Three O&M events were completed during March, April, and May 2023. o Replace oil in Dekker on April 20, 2023. o WR gauged for free phase product in monitoring wells MW-3, MW-4, and MW-8 during April and May 2023. o Pumped water/light non-aqueous liquid (LNAPL) from monitoring wells MW-3, MW-4, and MW-8 during the April 2023 and May 2023 O&M events. o Preparation and submittal of the enclosed report. C. SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION The site is located at 4982 US Highway 64 in Union Mills, Rutherford County, North Carolina, and is currently occupied by Cane Creek Mart. A site location map is provided as Figure 1 and the site plan is depicted on Figure 2. The release was discovered in 2010 and is associated with a leak from a gasoline fuel dispenser. Petroleum World, Inc. (PWI) was the former owner of the UST System. 1. Site Characteristics and Receptor Information • Land Use of Site: The site is currently utilized as a convenience store with retail petroleum sales and automotive repair. Historically the site was utilized as a retail petroleum fueling station. • Land Use of Surrounding Area: The land use of the surrounding area is predominantly residential and undeveloped. • Topography: The site is approximately 940 feet above the Nation Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929. Based upon the topographic map reviewed, the area of the subject property slopes predominantly to the north-northeast. • Surface Water: An unnamed tributary of Cane Creek lies along the north and northeastern property boundary. • Water Supply Wells: A total of 12 water supply wells are located within 1,500 feet of the source area. There are two (WSW-1 and WSW-5) active drinking water supply wells within 500 feet of the source area. Water supply well WSW-1 is located approximately 225 feet from the source area. One inactive drinking water supply well (WSW-2) is located approximately 115 feet from the source area. Five water supply wells are located between 500 feet and 1,000 feet of the source area. Four water supply wells are located WithersRavenel Our People. Your Success. Cane Creek Grocery Incident # 28866 WR Project # 23-0307-AK Corrective Action Performance Report July 2023 Page 3 of 5 between 1,000 feet and 1,500 feet of the source area. Municipal water is not available to the site or surrounding area. • Details regarding the adjacent properties with water supply wells are summarized in Table B-5A and the approximate location of the water supply wells are depicted on Figure 3. The land use of the surrounding area is a mixture of residential, undeveloped, and agricultural properties. • Soils underlying the site are characterized as Chewacla loam (zero to two percent slopes, frequently flooded). • According to the 1985 USGS Geologic Map of North Carolina, the site is underlain by the Inner Piedmont Belt of the Piedmont Physiographic Province. Bedrock in this area is migmatitic granitic gneiss, which is characterized as foliated to massive granitic to quartz dioritic, biotite gneiss and amphibolite common. • WR took over site O&M activities in March 2023. D. REMEDIATION SYSTEM OPERATION 1. Groundwater Monitoring Groundwater monitoring activities were not completed during completion of this task authorization. During this O&M period, WR gauged the following wells for LNAPL: MW-3, MW-4, and MW-8. Monitoring well gauging information is included in the table below. LNAPL and petroleum contaminated water was pumped from monitoring wells MW-3, MW- 4, and MW-8 during the April 2023 and May 2023 O&M events. Recovery Well 4/20/2023 Depth to LNAPL (ft) 4/20/2023 Depth to Water (ft) 5/18/2023 Depth to LNAPL (ft) 5/18/2023 Depth to Water (ft) MW-3 -- 7.27 -- 7.43 MW-4 -- 7.06 -- 7.22 MW-8 6.99 7.08 7.21 7.29 LNAPL was measured in MW-8 at a thickness of 0.09 feet in April 2023 and 0.08 feet in May 2023. Historical groundwater elevations and free product thicknesses are provided as Appendix B. 2. Remediation System Status During this reporting period, WR conducted system maintenance visits on March 16, April 20, and May 18, 2023. O&M field forms are included as Appendix A. WithersRavenel Our People. Your Success. Cane Creek Grocery Incident # 28866 WR Project # 23-0307-AK Corrective Action Performance Report July 2023 Page 4 of 5 3. General System Operation A pilot test was conducted in July 2012 on air sparge well (AS-1) and dual-phase extraction (DPE) well (DPE-1). Ten AS wells (AS-2 through AS-11) and six DPE wells (DPE-2 through DPE-7) were installed in October 2013. Three vapor extraction (VE) trenches were installed at the site between September 2014 and February 2015 during the construction and installation of the current remediation system. The three VE trenches are approximately six feet long, two feet wide and two feet deep. The current remediation system is comprised of a Dekker brand oil-sealed liquid-ring pump (LRP) which provides vacuum to operate the DPE and/or VE, and a rotary screw compressor for air sparging. Due to petroleum vapors entering the onsite building during the operation of the air sparge system, air sparging has not been conducted at the site since February 16, 2015. The current remediation system began operating on February 12, 2015. The DPE system is used during operation and maintenance (O&M) visits to recover LNAPL and petroleum contaminated water from select monitoring wells. A stinger pipe is lowered into the monitoring well and connected to the DPE line to recover water/LNAPL from the well. Recovered fluids are stored in a 3,000-gallon holding tank that is pumped out by an environmental service provider once the tank reaches full capacity. 4. Total Hours of Operation During the Period Between the dates of March 16, 2023 and May 18, 2023, the remediation system operated for 344 hours. The system was down between March 16 and April 20, 2023 due to low oil. Oil was added to the Dekker on April 20, 2023 and the system was restarted. On May 18, 2023, the system was found down upon arrival due to high discharge temperature. 5. System Repairs There were no system repairs during this O&M period. E. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The following summarizes the O&M activities conducted during the months of March, April, and May 2023. • Three O&M events were completed during March, April, and May 2023. • Replace oil in Dekker on April 20, 2023. • WR gauged for LNAPL product in monitoring wells MW-3, MW-4, and MW-8 during April and May 2023. LNAPL was measured in MW-8 at a thickness of 0.09 feet in April 2023 and 0.08 feet in May 2023. • WR pumped water/LNAPL from monitoring wells MW-3, MW-4, and MW-8 during the April 20 and May 18, 2023 O&M events. • During this period, the system operated for 344 hours. WithersRavenel Our People. Your Success. Cane Creek Grocery Incident # 28866 WR Project # 23-0307-AK Corrective Action Performance Report July 2023 Page 5 of 5 Based on the above, the following recommendations are presented: • Continue system operation and conduct five O&M visits per quarter to increase system operation time by restarting system more frequently following the system being down due to high discharge temperatures or power outages. • Explore restarting the air sparge system by limiting operation to AS-1, AS-8, AS-9, and AS- 10. • Continue pumping petroleum impacted groundwater and/or LNAPL from MW-3, MW-4, and MW-8. • Conduct semi-annual monitoring well, water supply well, and surface water sampling events.
