Services were authorized by the North Carolina Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Task Authorization (TA) #01, accepted May 11, 2023, and Contract Number N70522-A. The approved scope of services for this Task Authorization included: •Collect a groundwater sample from water supply well WSW-7 influent and effluent andanalyze the groundwater sample, one trip blank, and one field blank via Standard Method(SM) 6200B plus ethylene dibromide (EDB), methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), anddiisopropyl ether (DIPE); and •Prepare a letter report documenting the findings. The Kelly’s Grocery site is located at 3474 NC 751, Apex, Wake County, NC (See Figures in Attachment A). CATLIN conducted field activities on May 24, 2023, in accordance with the approved TA. Field notes are documented on a Daily Activities Log, provided in Attachment B. Site photographs are presented in Attachment C. Available water supply well/property owner information is summarized in Table 1 (Attachment D). Groundwater Sampling The water supply well WSW-7 was sampled at the well (WSW-7I; Influent) and after the carbon filtration system (WSW-7E; Effluent). The location for WSW-7 is illustrated on the attached Figure 2 and the well was sampled in accordance with NCDEQ Guidelines and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 4 Operating Procedures. Prior to obtaining a representative groundwater sample, the well was purged by allowing the spigot at the well (influent) to run for approximately 45 minutes and the spigot on the house (effluent) was allowed to run for 15 June 20, 2023 Page 2 of 2 NCDEQ; 5656_Kelly's Grocery.docx CATLIN Engineers and Scientists CATLIN Project No. 221050 June 2023 minutes. The groundwater samples were collected from the spigot located on the water supply well (WSW-7I) and from the spigot on the southeast side of the residence (WSW-7E). The samples were collected from the spigots directly into appropriate laboratory-provided, pre-preserved glassware, labeled, and placed on ice in an insulated cooler. A field blank was collected by pouring water from a new, sealed gallon of distilled water directly into appropriate, laboratory- provided, pre-preserved glassware, labelled and placed on ice in an insulated cooler. A laboratory-provided trip blank accompanied the samples for the duration of the site activities. The groundwater sample, field blank, and laboratory-provided trip blank were submitted to Con-Test Analytical Laboratory (Certification NC 652 and NC-DW 25703) in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, under proper chain of custody (COC) protocol and analyzed per SM 6200B (including EDB, MTBE, and DIPE). The laboratory analytical data and COC are included in Attachment E. Groundwater Sample Results Laboratory analysis indicated an estimated (“J”-value) benzene concentration in sample WSW-7I of 0.29 micrograms per liter (µg/L), which is below the concentration of 1 µg/L established in the Title 15A of the North Carolina Administrative Code, Subchapter 2L Groundwater Quality Standards (2L GWQS). No additional targeted analytes were detected in either sample WSW-7I or WSW-7E. The trip blank and field blank both indicated estimated concentrations (“J”-values) of acetone (a known laboratory artifact). No additional targeted analytes were detected in either of these two samples. The current and historical laboratory analytical results are summarized in Tables 2 and 3, respectively (Attachment D). A copy of the complete laboratory report and chain of custody documentation are presented in Attachment E. CATLIN Engineers and Scientists will proceed upon notification of your approval. Should you have any questions or require additional information, please contact us at 910-726-1307. Sincerely, Sean J. O’Neil, P.E. Wide recovery limits established for difficult compound. Wide RPD limits established for difficult compound. #Data exceeded client recommended or regulatory level Percent recoveries and relative percent differences (RPDs) are determined by the software using values in the calculation which have not been rounded. No results have been blank subtracted unless specified in the case narrative section. FLAG/QUALIFIER SUMMARY Detected but below the Reporting Limit (lowest calibration standard); therefore, result is an estimated concentration (CLP J-Flag).
