One ormore concentrations ofVOCs includingbenzerre, ethylbenzene, toluene, total xylenes, methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), naphthalene, isopropylb enzene, n-propylbenzene, I ,2-dichloroethane ( 1 ,2-DCA), ethylene dibromide (EDB), and I,2,4-trimethylbenzene were detected at concentrations above the 15A NCAC 2L Groundwater Standards (2L Standards) in wells including MW-l, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, and T- I . Concentrations of analytes including benzene, 1 ,2-DCA, and EDB were detected above the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ gross contaminant levels (GCLs) in MW-2, which are the applicable standards for this site. Refer to the following Table and Appendix for current groundwater analytical data. R"f", to Figures Refe, to Table: R"fe, to Appendix Figures 5 through 7 Table 3 Appendix B o Historical Groundwater Analytic al Data: Total dissolved phase petroleum concentrations in monitoring wells MW- 1, MW-4, and T-1 have increased in comparison to the May 2017 data. Total dissolved phase petroleum concentrations in monitoring wells MW-2 and MW-3 have decreased in comparison to the May 2017 data. No dissolved phase petroleum concentrations have been detected at or above the laboratory detection limits in monitoring well MW-5 since the March 2009 sampling event.. Refer to the following table(s) for historical groundwater analfiical data. Rqfer to Table(s): Table 4 Dissolved Phase Plume Size and Location: The on-site dissolved phase plume is irregularly shaped and has an approximate length of Il7 feet and width of92 feet based on the benzene concentrations above 2L Standards. The dissolved phase plume that is above the NCDEQ GCLs, the applicable standards for this site, is approximately 12 feet in length by 7 feet in width (Figure 5). The plume maps for constituents that are above the GCLs are shown on the following figures. Ref", to Figure(s): Figures 5 through 7 Texaco Food Mart #2 Lexington, Davidson County, North Carolina Incident#:22332 Monitoring Report December 21,2011 Page 4 a a Proximity of Plume to Nearest Receptor(s) Based on the receptor survey conducted in 2001, there were three (3) confirmed drinking water supply wells and six (6) inactive supply wells located within 1,000 feet of the source area. The closest drinking water supply well (WSW- 1) is located approximately 450 feet south (hydraulically upgradient) of the site. No surface water bodies were observed in the field or on the topographic map within 500-feet of the source area. R"fu, to Figure: R"f", to Table: Figure 3 Table 1 Predictive Rate of Contaminant Transport: The contaminant plume has been fairly stable or immobile over the past several years, and in general reducing in concentration. MW-5 continues to show non-detect levels of contamination.o In 200I, three (3) privately owned drinking water supply wells were identified within a 1,000-foot radius of the source area with the nearest confirmed drinking water supply well approximately 450 feet hydraulically upgradient from the source area.o Based on a conversation with Michael Rogers of the NCDEQ on November 16,2010, since WSW-1 is approximately 450 feet upgradient of the site and the property owner would not allow Shield or NCDEQ to sample their supply well, the Texaco Food Mart #2 site would likely be reduced to low risk if soil excavation was completed to remove as much soil as feasibly possible in the area of SB-8 and if MW-2 groundwater concentrations were below GCLs.o Soil excavation around boring SB-8 was conducted on February 28, 2012 via over drilling with 14-inch outside diameter hollow stem augers around the boring. Details of the excavation were previously submitted to the NCDEQ in the Monitoring Report dated October 23,2012. 3.0 RECOMMENDATIONS It is recommended that bi-weekly air sparging be conducted to reduce the groundwater concentrations to below GCLs, with NCDEQ and Trust Fund approval. Since the plume above the GCLs is only approximately 12 feet in diameter, Shield recommends continuing semi-annual Mobile Multi-Phase Extraction (MMPE) events at the site in order to expedite cleanup. Shield recommends conducting semi-annual MMPE events, the next event in April 2018, along with follow-up sampling events in order to monitor the effectiveness of the MMPE events. Once MW-2 is below the GCLs, Shield will request a "no further action" determination from the NCDEQ. a o a a Texaco Food Mart #2 Lexington Davidson County, North Carolina lncident#:22332 Monitoring Report December 21,2071 Page 6 4.0 LIMITATIONS Shield has pedormed environmental services at the subject site on behalf of Techno LLC for Holding Brothers, Inc. Charlotte, North Caro li na 28208 October 2 - 6,2017 Advanced Job # 10 - 1741 Advanced Personnel: Lee Heilig and Gary McDaniel MMPE System MMPE system rated24"hg at 140 CFM 4' discharge stack - 2" diameter 6,000 - gallon tanker Approximately 120'of 2.0" hose to I well Extraction Well: MW-2 Well Initial FPAilL(ft) Final FP/WL(ft) Stinger depth(ft) Run Time MW-2 21.38 3t.07 22125129 96.0 hours Description of Event: The MMPE event ran from 1 1 :30 October 2, through I l:30 October 6,2017. The MMPE system was active for 96.0 hours. During the event vacuum at the recovery pump ranged from 20.0 to 21.0 inches of mercury (hg) and stabilized at approximalely 21.0 inches of mercury. Airflow rates ranged from 3,900 to 4,100 feet per minute and stabilized at 4,000 feet per minute. System temperature ranged from 126.0 - 142.0 degrees (F) and humidity ranged from 41.0 to 99.0 percent. Field gauged volatile organic compounds (VOC's) decreased from 1,600 parts per- million (PPM) to 700 (PPM) throughout the event. Groundwater / Product Mix Recovered: During the event, a total of 1,518 gallons of product/water mix were removed from the site and properly disposed at a certified North Carolina disposal facility. No free product was recovered as liquid. Total fluids recovered, was measured based on stick readings conducted during and following the event. Based on 96.0 hours of operation and a total of 1,518 gallons recovered, the average groundwater recovery rate was calculated to be approximately 15.81 gallons per hour. Events Results: Based on mass-removal calculations 14.35 pounds or 2.33 gallons of VOC's were removed as vapor. Using Dwyer Magnehelic gauges, vacuurr influence (inches of water) was measured at monitoring points MW-l and MW-7. Vacuum influence was observed at monitoring point MW-7 up to 0.05 inches of water. Draw-down was observed in MW-l and MW-7 at 0.53 and 0.35 feet respectively. Following the event, no free product was identified in any well.
